On the board for today will be installing the servos, and servo hatches for the right wing, LE and wing tips. I am planning on joining the wing this weekend and fitting it to the fuselage, exciting!

Getting the ailerons ready to glass

Being I had to drill a big enough hole for the hinge (part 1 ) to fit into the aileron it left the hinge slot oversized.

Part # 2 of the hinge is only 1/16" so I filled in the slot using a spacer block with a piece of G-10 and I glued a piece of 1/32" ply to both sides. Then I glued in some 1/16" or 3/32" balsa to center the hinge slot for part #2.

Now I can sand the aileron to fit then glass it. I wont do any filling until after I glass.

Even the control linkage got some 1/32" ply to face out the slot.

That is one tight fit on the linkage, no slop there.

With the scale linkage and the fries hinges, you don't get your standard RC linkage with a 3/4" horn over the privet point and a long servo arm for max torque. The linkage is at the top of the aileron opposite of the pivot point of the hinges. The throw will be 3/4" that's all that is needed for a scale plane. The servo arm is maybe 1" to 3/4" also so max strength on the servo but a small motion. We will see how this type if fries aileron works.

The proof will be in the pudding on the maiden flight. I can't wait to see how it all works out.

I'm getting close, the first chipie took three months from purchase to maiden. I'm just one month into this build and I'm close to glassing and detailing. Hoping to have the wing joined by the end of the weekend.

Been doing grunt work, fine tuning the ailerons and flaps, getting the wing ready to joint. Up next is LE and wing tips.
Already got 80min of run time on the DLE55 so that is moving along.

There is one last detail that I need to decide if I am going to do it. It is a very distinct feature to the chipmunk look.

The fairings at the wing where the wing meets the fuselage is indented on the bottom and in the center of the wing bottom the fuselage continues threw the bottom of the wing. So the bottom of the wing is not flat.

On the fiberglass fuselage the rear area on the wing mount is flat so I would have to cut it and rework it, totally possible just a lot of work, it is a signature detail though

Will it work to attach a piece to the bottom of the wing?

Yes and no, the fuselage and the bottom of the wing needs to be shaped too. Once I mount the wing to the fuselage I will know what can and needs to be done.

Wing progress.

I got the wing tips cut and the LE glued in.

Wing tips are cut from a 3"x2" balsa block. Tip cord is 11-1/2 so 12" blocks would work. I got a 3' long piece so I would have a backup.

I blew up the drawing of the scale tip to the proper cord dimension and made a template to cut the tips, also I have the location and size for the nav light.

The template that came with the kit is much thicker, probably because it is for a supper chipmunk!

The tip is ready to glue in once I shape the LE. All the facing is done and nice and tight. I only want maybe 1/32" of gape after painting.

I wont glue in the TE until I am ready to glass, it tends to ne venerable.

Got some good time on the DLE55. Almost 2gal and 2-1/2 hr on it and it has performed great. I did a tank sizing run today. Ran at full throttle for 15 min and did one aborted landing and landed. Used 24oz. So I will use two 12oz tanks or two 14oz tanks, going to try and fit the 14 for good measure. I normally only fly a 10 min flight so the 12s will work.

Tomorrow is a build day so going to get to it.

Default Do these link work ?

Hi everyone, All the nice folks,

Will find out soon if these links are functional.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NsfF5ssqIw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPs-ySNSoD8

I will remove if non functional or if inappropriate.

Editing _ _ _
The links are working fine.
Watch a perfect three point landing at the end of the second link.

It is not a model; it is a full size Chipmunk so if considered out of topic I will gladly delete the post content.

The links also bring many other videos related to Dehavilland airplanes and the DHC 1 .

Been working feverishly since 5 AM, pitot tube drilled into LE, LE sanded, wing tips installed and sanded, wing joined and drying, pics once I catch my breath

Now that the wing is joined I can fit it to the fuselage and drill the wing dowels . I will be installing two spars. The main spar will be 24" long and at the CG. The rear spar will be just in front of the flap hinge line and will be part of the rear wing bolts.
After reviewing the fuselage I will be able to do the scale wing fairings on the belly

Lots of exciting stuff to do.

The wing.

Starting with the leading edge I mark a center control line . The line is not dead center on the tip cord or on the root cord.

I use sewing pins and a strait edge to mark the center line.

I made a sanding jig from a 2"x3"x6" balsa block. 150 grit sticky sand paper is inserted in the jig.

The shaping of the LE is done with a plane and then sanded, finally I hit it with the jig.

A control line was also drawn on the wing tips prier to shaping. I use the appropriate sized block to mark a line all the way around the tip as it sits flat on the bench, I do a center line then one above and one below as to help shape the tip. Then I rough cut and shape it before gluing it to the wing.
The LE was installed and sanded before I glued the tips in.

I cut the nav light in while the tip was still in block form.

The dihedral was shaped with a 2"x3"x12" balsa block with 80 grit sticky sand paper attached to it. I used a degree gage to measure the correct angle, 5 degrees total so 2.5 on each halve.

30 min epoxy was used to join the wings.

I am laying up the final hatches, one for the landing gear on the right wing and one for the Pitot tube on the left wing.
The telemetry Pitot tube was originally going to go in the aileron servo bay but it wont fit so I will just cut a small one in just for that.

The scale location for the Pitot tube is under the wing in a "L" drop down mount. It is not feasible to do it with the telemetry so I am improvising and pretending it is mounted in the wings LE like the later war birds have it.

Besides just being fun to having an air speed indicator I want it so if I do compete with this plane and go to events I will have a positive air speed for landings in an unfamiliar setting and field. It is an important tool that I feel will come in handy.
Every day flying at my field it is not necessary, but still fun

I started to glue in the TE on the wing and control surfaces too.

Next I will finish the few items left to do on the wing before I cut in the spar.

Tony,

Will you locate the pitot head where it is on the full size ?
