On the bench for today
More rivets and a test shoot of the yellow paint.
I painted the cowl and the canopy frame this morning and this will determine what I do paint wise.
First impressions is not reassuring. First with the rivets you get hidden lint under them and it stands out like a sour thumb when you paint.
Not a lot just one here and there and I don't know how you would avoid this. I think with the heavier paints like Klass Koat it hides them, but the lighter rattle can doesn't do a good job at it.
Also laying the paint is not easy, if you go to light it is blotchy, if to heavy it runs, so a small window to get it right.
So we will see when it dries. I did them as a test and I can always redo them being they are small enough. But if the results are not good then I will go with the klass koat paint.

Ok, initial finding show mediocre results. Not terrible but not stunning, just in between.
One of the issues is the rivets take more paint to cover then the rest so even if you think your just at the run threshold the rivets don't get the same converge. So the result is good to ok coverage on the body, but poor coverage on the rivets.
So there is another option that would be better then this. I have a compressor and a gun. So I will just shoot the klass koat myself and it cant be worse then this.
On the cowl and the canopy frame that already has paint on it. I can either strip it and start over or let it cure and sand it, prime it and then paint it. I will consult on this to make sure the paints are compatible, probably not.
Once the fuselage is done I'm painting it with klass koat, that's that!

The cowl and canopy have dried enough for a closer look. Not bad but not stunning.
So the cowl is not bad, all the lint knocked off and only a couple spots where the paint pooled over the lint.
This paint is thinner and it doesn't cover the rivets as much as a patulous paint would, like the Klass Koat.
But on the other hand you get more of a raised rivet then a flush rivet. so something to consider.
The finish is more satin then high gloss.
If I were to keep this I would clean it up and hit it again to get a bit more coverage.
The canopy did not come out as good as the cowl, more lint.
Less coverage as I was worried about runs. This could be fixed up with a second coat, if I go that rout.
Not a total loss but not thrilled with it.
The color is good!
I will digest this for a bit but I am 100% sure I will shoot the fuselage with Klass Koat.
Once that is done I will address the cowl and canopy.
I need to see the results of the K K paint and if the color is clos touch up the cowl and canopy.

Sorry to hear about the lint that is a big problem when I paint lacking an indoor area I can spray in. Do you think the paint is in someway attracting the lint like a static charge or is it just something in the air? I remember when we would paint cars in a friend's garage a million years ago we would pour water on the concrete to keep dust, etc out of the air, is this something that could work for you? The funny thing was we were using Imron back in those days. I don't miss the fumes at all! The rivets look great!

OKC, the lint gets trapped under the rivets, it is almost impossible to see but once you paint it pops. I am doing my best to keep my installation as clean as possible. I wipe the rivet strips with alcohol and use a fresh piece of tape each time.
I think with priming after all the rivets are in it will seal them and I can wet sand all the lint away. I remember it was really bad when I did a test piece for Angie.
I do think I got a handle on it and things should progress in a more positive way.

Daily progress.
I am pluging away on the rivets. Not even going to count them......yet
I am concentrating on the tail section, anything aft of the wing.
This is the hardest part and has the most work. The front will be easy.
The stab and fin are getting the works right now. I am using three different sizes and spacing to mix it up.
My rivets are by no means "scale" I am just doing what I want and what looks good to me.
I will be throwing in some inspection cover here and there....for fun.
I haven't decided what I will do with this hatch (the canopy servo hatch).
I am almost done with the fuselage and will have most of it done tomorrow. I need to have it ready to prime by Monday morning.
Edwin is going to paint it with the Klass Koat paint on Tuesday

On the bench for today.
I am trying to finish the fuselage today.
One good thing about the vinyl rivets is that if you don't like something it is easy to remove them and start over.
I did not like the band I did earlier at the end of wing panel line. It was to bulky and messy.
So I went with the 5 dice look and a smaller rivet.
I have decided to can the rattle can and go get a spray gun.
The main reason I haven't is because I don't have the booth or space to do one, but almost all the videos I have watched of builders painting (with klass kote) are doing it outside in the open air.
Edwin is going to help me spray the fuselage, he has a closed air conditioned shop so that will be good, plus he can show me how to use the gun.
I will strip the cowl and canopy frame and start over on them.
More rivets, take a break, more rivets, go to GYM, more rivets, take a break, and more rivets

Progress
Got a good jump on the front left side.
The front is pretty strait forward with the wing fairing being the only hard part.
I am getting pretty good at this rivet laying
Do it enough and you come up with a system.
I like the iso tape for those areas that you would otherwise do the "one rivet forward, two rivets back" dance.
I should get the fuselage done by tomorrow, then prime on Monday and get ready to go to Edwin's shop On Tuesday.
I got a sprayer and all the stuff I need to get started at HD today, nothing fancy but this will do.

Man, every time I don't follow along for a couple of days then catch back up, I'm always amazed with your progress. Your doing an outstanding job. Especially for a " quick build" . Keep it up and you'll be flying it in no time.

All done.
So rough estimate is 12,000 + rivets.
I am all riveted out, time for a break.
I will mask tonight and prime in the morning.
Then spend the day stripping the cowl and canopy frame.

Tony,
I apologize for letting myself getting drawn off topic in your thread here. As the Forum Manager for RCU I should know better. I have cleaned the thread up of all the messiness so that it doesn't distract from the wonderful work you are doing here.
Keep up the good work here.

What to do!
So the fuselage is all masked and ready to paint.
I am not using liquid mask on the canopy glass. There is no need when you have a fiberglass frame.
I just cut the tape at the frame with a new #11 blade and I am good.
So the thing I am sparing with is do I prime then paint or just paint.
Problem with priming is I have to sand. I cant just prime then paint.
I have gotten mixed results from searches about priming or just painting. Chad said he does not prime before he paints a plane with rivets.
The only reason I would consider priming is to seal the rivets and overlays. I only have a few overlays and my frame is pretty good right now as far as ready to paint.
I am not as worried about lint using the Klasskote paint being it is a heavier paint and should cover anything under the vinyl rivets. If not we will turn it into weathering
I will go over the plane with my make shift tackier ( blue tape) or use a tack cloth and make sure nothing big like hairs and so on are laying there.
So as it is now I would like to paint the fuselage in the morning unless I have a change of mind over night.
I need to go to HD in the morning and setup my paint station so I should be shooting around 8:00 in the morning before it gets hot.
Anyways she is ready, and I am ready.

Painting
Ok so I went for it. completely in the blind and read that some of the best paint jobs are done without thinking about it and going for it, sometimes in bad light.
So I mixed up 3oz of A 3 oz of B and a little more then 3oz of thinner.
I let this sit for 40 mins then added the thinner.
When it was time I strained the paint and did a few test on the wall. I have no idea what I am doing and just winged it.
When it looked good I did a test on some hatches to see how it would react.
I hit the frame with a mist coat (that's what I have seen) then a met coat.
After the first wet coat I went to hit it again (adjusting the gun as I went). I ran out of paint as I got to the front.
Overall I am pleased as this was my first attempt as HVLP painting.
You can see where I ran out of paint and did not get a good wet coat.
The plane is not the best paint job but it will do and it will look fine in the air.
Some places are great and some are not, we will see after I hit it again.
Klasskote says it is best to recoat shortly after the first to bond the epoxies. So I mixed up a new batch and I am waiting.
