That's it Tony, the ones in your pictures have the covers on them, others will have the rings in the event you need to get in there, Back in the old days we put the rings on the dope finish by softening the paint with acetone and stuck the rings on and painted them with a brush.

Hi Leroy, I've been watching and enjoying your build for sometime now. I'm building a building a cub as well, to be finished as an L4 grasshopper, gotta finish this thing this winter!
Im also using a DLE 30, trying to find a muffler that will not make me carve a hole in the side of the engine cowl, gave you decided on a muffler yet that will provide a decent fit?
thanks

Todd hear are some pic's of a modified pitts style muffler the Bison from Canada made for me as we have a real strick sound rule at out field First one is the right side center is the modded parts the increased can size is the most important the holed baffle and the stacks help brake up the sound wave. this is on a RCGF-26 and note the extra mounting leg on the right side it is a must to keep the muffler from coming loose.
It met our sound requirement with 10 db's to spare.
I am sure they make a unit that will fit your 30 cc engine, this maybe the engine I will put in my cub.
Hope this helps
Cheers Bob T

I have two from Jtec. One is a wrap around pitts on a DLE 20 that is louder than all heck, and one, the same thing, on a super tigre 3250 that is the same exact muffler for the DLE 30 except it has a pressure nipple. That one was much less noisy. May be something to think about if noise is of concern. Just a thought.

The best muffler that I have found for the DLE 30 is from Mile High RC. It is very quiet when running a 19x8 prop. I have two of them. They pass the noise test with no concerns and they are inexpensive. I just comunicated with Mike from Mile High and although this DLE 30 pitts muffler is not listed on his site, he does have them. It is the same style as the "DLE 20 pitts muffler". Make sure you order the all tubular pitts DLE30 type not the one shown on his site for the DLE30/EME35

Guys I have Tried most all of the muffler brands in the past 5 years, 26 cc and up Pitts and side cans and until the last ones, none would meet the AMA 90 db at 9 suggestion J-tech make a great add on unit but you have to have the room, or build a spot for it. for those that are right on the border with the Db thingy you can stuff about 1/4 of a S/S pot scrubber in to the can section ( caution to much and you get to much back pressure) any thing to break up the sound wave,
Leroy Sorry to get so far off topic but the sound thingy at our field has been a real PITA at our field.
Cheers bob T
PS the one Bison made for me it was only about 15 $$more the a stock one

If purchasing a J-Tech muffler, you have the option to buy the larger style that comes with a larger can. It does help keep the noise down. If you purchase the "standard" style can it will be loud. I just purchased a wrap around Pitts for my DA-35 (with the larger can) and it is super quiet! The type of prop you run will also contribute to how loud it is as well...

Randy I don't know much about all the different kits out there. I bought the Balsa kit because it's the widest fuselage of the kits I know of and this plane is a wide body Super Cub I'm building. I'm like you, there are enough J3 cubs out there and I wanted one different, I'm going to get it too. I don't know where your skill level is but this plane right out of the box build isn't much different than the smaller ones, if you make a Super Cub from any of them there is things you need to work out. Fiberglass Specialties makes the cowls for the 1/4 and 1/3 scale planes from Sig and Balsa and Robart has the scale gear, you can always use the provided gear wires.

Inspection rings for this plane, couldn't find any scale made ones so found a way to make my own, doing a lot of that on this one. I did find the drawings for the covers but not the rings. A 1.5" PVC pipe is close enough so I proceeded to make them. Using a 8" length of pipe I squared up the ends, changed the band saw blade to a thin metal one and cut two rings to check width and adjusted it to .023" sanded the saw kerf marks off the ends on the belt sander and cut two more which came out perfect. following the same procedure I made around 30 of them and cleaned them up with a #7 knife blade. Sorry for the blurred one.
Finished size is .023" thick, 1 and 7/8" wide with a cross section of around 3/16". I think I have a method for the covers made from Litho plate also, more on that later.

Are you going to make these inspection panels functional?
and what will you be using for the actual covers? Can't wait to see....

Today I ordered the jTECH wrap around Pitts muffler for the DLE30 and it will likely get modified to one discharge tube to better fit the scale of my plane. I used a jTECH on my DLE20 and cut the can and one tube off and I didn't see or hear much difference. We are far enough from the whining public that noise is no problem.

I looked at the Bisson and the one at Mile High RC and they look like their made the same way as the crap mufflers that come with the engines. Jtech mufflers are made a lot better than most being tig welded and they don't need support straps.

Some yrs. ago I bought a special made muffler for a 1/5 scale mustang with a DLE55 engine from Jtech, they were making to order at the time $110 shipped. It was real nice looking until I went to put it on and found a gob of weld and restriction at the out board screw hole so got the cutters out and cleaned it up. I e-mailed them and told them what I found and what I had to do in order to use it and mentioned it should have been done before they sent it to me. Their response was if you don't like it send it back, I let it go at that but I can't sat what I thought about them at the time.
They build a good muffler now and have even improved on them but I look else where when I buy one.

Getting back to the tail. I did put a make shift jack screw in just for the fun of it, it kinda looks like one too and is visible all closed up, "anything worth points" to the judges. Looking at the real tail I wondered how the covering transition was going to look and be accomplished when I do it, like how much of the lower fin is it stuck to to get that nice flair on the front base of it, it just looks odd. The fuselage tail post will be the last thing going on the plane after the finished parts go on, I need to slide the elevator assembly through a slot in order to get the hinges on and the tail wheel assembly is not going to look like that when I get finished with it, lots of small things to do to this one, it's all fun though. I can't believe all the work I got myself into when I decided to build a Super Cub and it's like that from one end to the other but fun stuff.
