Okeyday, I didn't get to fly but I did run the engine in. She started super easy with the spring starter and the idle is great. We'll fly soon.

Question for those who have built a flown the Camel. Did you mount the horizontal stab as per drawings or did you add pos incidence as some suggest to do and how does the elevator trim out. I want to build one soon and need in put, thanks.

I have been building removable Stabs on my Balsa USA kits so I can shim the stabs later for trim. I haven't heard of anyone complaining about the advantage of adding a couple degrees positive to the stab on WW1 kits of Balsa USA's.

sheesh I reread my post and realized...I had miss spoke and said exactly the opposite of what I meant...

I have built several of Balsa USA WW I kits. I have always addled positive incidence to the stab 4 to 5 degrees. This helps the climbing under full power, you down have to use down trim to fly level.

Rich,
I knew that you did that to your dvii, so you are saying that this is your rule of thumb for all Balsa USA WW 1 1/4 scale kits? Thanks Jim

I would think so, my next project is the 1/4 scale Fokker DR-1 and I plan to add positive incidence to the stab. I did construction threads on RC Scale Builder for both Fokker D VIIs, the Sopwith Pups and the SPAD XIII. The first D VII I added the positive incidence, it require little to no down trim. After it crashed (lost it in the sun) I bought another D-VII that was already built but not flown because of the price and the time. Again I did a construction thread on the that D-VII because of problems I noted after I did a closer inspection. This construction thread was also on RCSB, (Renovating the BUSA Fokker D-VII,Basla USA, page 5), at the time I did not add the positive incidence. The airplane required a lot of down trim to fly straight and level in full power. This past winter I built a new tail group and added the positive incidence. Now it flys great with no down trim needed. I have also built 2 Sopwth Pups and most rercent the Spad XII, all have the positive incidence change. Here are pictures of them flying, no down trim needed, I don't have a good picture of the SPAD XIII yet.

Rich,
Thanks for all the information. I have always love the Sopwith Camel and will probably start building it for a winter project. I use the DLE engines in most of my sport planes so I am considering using the DLE 40 twin, I believe it weights about 3.5 lbs and sounds great, also it will fit inside the Camels cowl. Jim

Rich,
With the middle wing at 0*
top wing +1*
bottom wing -1*
stab +1*
That's what I set my tripe at as per Dave Lewis (BUSA)
Flies great, once balanced, minimum pitch trim required.
