Where have all the builders gone
#926
I have several books of Aircraft Reference. Get an Aircraft Encyclopedia and you have more then you can want. I like my time building more than flying. I love Scratch Building from Plans and hand making intricate pieces that work. My passion is medium to large TRUE SCALE warbirds.
That Rutan is quite a NICE job. He is a fantastic designer and builder of Aircraft. It's fun to see him at Oshkosh and what his newest project is.

Teach them the correct ways to do things and they will always do good work. AND the benefit is that you just had a moment with your son that he will remember for a lifetime! Good Job! There are so many kids out there that don't even know their Father.

I have my share of ARF's in the attic!
for ARF's I pic planes I would never have built. ie:
bh P-36
Seagul De520
CMP Me109 (though I have a Holman scratch built ready for panel lines and rivets)
CMP P-40 (it was 140 bucks)
my latest is a BH Macchi 200, just needs landing gear and maiden. but it will look real good on the flightline next year with a Macchi 200 & Macchi 202 (IMP) side by side. the 202 is presently gas but by next year will be electric.

Tom, Nice job, looks like you have room for a nice radial engine up front.............Ron
Commenting on what everyone is saying, It doesn't matter if you built it or not, you are in the hobby which supports all of us, so everyone should support each other.
I do get a little perturbed when someone has a number of ARF's and claims he built all of them, and insists that it takes as much skill and time to put together an ARF as it does to build a kit, I just ignore and go on.
It's just like in the Harley Davidson and Honda group, a lot of those people are so narrow minded they have to cut down each other even though they are enjoying the same hobby, who cares what bike you are riding.
I have been riding since 1962 my first bike was a 1955 Harley 74 Hydro-glide, I was 16 years old was going to school and had a job, I wanted a Honda dream, you could buy one then for $7.00 a week but my dad wouldn't co-sign for me. Our neighbor wanted to sell his Harley so he could get one of the newer ones with shocks on the back, when I brought it home my mom had a smile on her face and my dad was pulling his hair out. (he should have co-signed) Ha!Ha!
I have had people come up to me and apologize for riding another brand of bike and I just tell them there is nothing wrong with the one you are riding, there are a lot of people who can't afford one would give a lot to have what you are riding, that makes them feel better and they join right into the group.
In this day and time we need to stick together folks and quit putting each other down because they don't fly what you are flying, that just shows a lack of smart's.
Now people who abuse the hobby and don't follow the rules, that is another subject.
Ron

I just completed building a IMP TA152H and ended up replacing 90% of the balsa wood supplied. Balsa wood in contest grade is not cheap and the density chosen most match the application. I got the kit off EBay and paid about $400 dollars for it. Now add the additional cost of the wood I had to purchase and the airframe cost me about $750 dollars. For that price I could buy an ARF war bird but the construction and completion of the project was well worth it. I still remember the time when I built an SR-2 crop duster from plans and took it to the field for its maiden flight. More than one person asked me were did I get that ARF. Building models either from plans or kits will never die but those who do are a vanishing breed.

Why fewer builders. Maybe because it is hard to build an R/C airplane or be creative in any way when your nose is stuck in a cell phone or pad. IQ must also have an effect.
