On a side note I was in Enid Oklahoma yesterday at a Veteran Outreach event and on the way out of town I stopped at Enid;s only Hobby Shop. It was a nice shop it had a lot of stuff with the builder in mind and a nice selection of plastic models. I may have bought some of those from him back in the day when I lived in Enid (64 to 68). I bought out the last of his 3/32 dia. piano wire. The stuff has been like hen's teeth to find since the Hobbico bankruptcy. We talk for a bit and the owner confided he is considering retiring since business is so bad.

Thank You all for your comments. Much appreciated

I had a really nice smooth landing all setup, touchdown was silky, then the left wheel hit a gopher hole. Bent the strut, but no damage to the wing. It's times like this that you know you got it right!

Since this is allegedly a thread of hardshell dyed in the wool builders has anyone found a inexpensive source for Piano (also known as Music) wire? The best I have come up with is a 3 pack of 3/32" X 36"for $6.79 plus shipping from Brodak. My LHS is ordering some from Brodak as a stop gap but he struggling to find a bulk supplier.

Grainger sells in bulk. Apparently you can also purchase directly from K&S.As a reseller he may be able to get it wholesale.

I checked Granger's website, they have a local store, and it is $22 for a 10 pack and usually takes 4 to 5 days to come in for pickup. I have bought odds and ends from them over the years.

I don't get to The City all that often but would still be interested to know where your LHS is.

As far as I can work it out, 3/32" wire is 2.38mm. SLEC in the UK offer a range of wires. The nearest to 3/32" is 12 (British) Standard Wire Guage which is slightly bigger at 2.65mm. These cost £1.24 each or $1.65US. Therefore three of them will cost you $4.95US plus postage. Piano Wire

SLEC make or stock a wide range of products from clevises to quarter-scale biplane kits so you may like to make up an order. I can vouch for the quality of their wire, push rods, balsa wood and fuel tanks.

Go to McMaster-Carr and do a search for music wire. Looks like the 1080 spec is what we want. Relatively cheap in a big coil.

Hi all: Richard here in scappoose, oregon. I have been away from the forum for some time now, and just logged into my gmail to find messages. I have been doing potato growing for the local food bank, and doing very little at the model building workbench. While dealing with a trainer build for a long time, i picked up a tower 40 trainer arf with engine, etc that had no flight time on it. Found the controls unairworthy,, and needed to be reworked. The new tower .46 engine was removed, and put through the break-in runs, and then re-installed. Since the model came with six ounces of tail weight, i made an effort to correct this added weight. Moved the engine closer to the firewall. And battery location. Found on re-balance last night that with muffler attached it balanced at the 3.75" location. My 25% mac location was at 3.5". Will just have to find out at the test flight if the factory location is correct. I really rather re-work models than build from kits. Building from plans is a lot more interesting. Do hope the building goes on to keep the hobby being alive. Flying may be fun, but building is exciting also.

Cheers!!!
Rich

Since we are are all builders here I need some information from any of you who have used Solartex in the past. I have a roll I bought some time back to cover my Dr.1 with and I need to know if its like Coverite fabric and has a grain i.e. shrinks more in one direction than the other?

The grain most likely runs down the length of the roll.

No it shrinks pretty evenly in both directions. You'll love using it. Shame it's no longer produced. Good job I've got pretty good stocks.

Yes you can still buy Solarfilm products but they are running stocks down and are no longer making anything. They've already run out of Solartex Linen much favoured WW1 enthusiasts.

Didn't we have a similar conversation last week, where I mentioned that just the remaining stock was being sold off ?

Hi Mike, the shipping from steven's of Calhan Colorado was $7.90 for three rolls of Aerofilm. Yes they are selling out what they have left and what I got was not even marked and didn't even come with a application note.
