Your doing an outstanding job there Ken.
Can't wait to be able to get onto a balsa ply build on the building table again soon. ;-)

Btw. hoping to beat your old Vanquish again next week ;-)

Not that there's anything wrong with your old Vanquish. :-P

Hi Jim! Thanks for the kind words! Maybe after a couple more kits I can tackle one of Naruke's designs :-).

Yeah, I remember the comp's next weekend! Wishing I could be there with you guys, but praying for good weather (I heard it's a hot summer this year!) and a good turnout. By the way if it's gonna be hot I hope there's good baffling in your new airframe for the motor and esc? It made a big difference for me when I added two small baffles for the motor on mine.

cheers!

P.S. I'm gonna miss Steve's BBQ!

Hi guys,

I think this will be one of the last updates until the new year...with the holiday season here building's going to take a backseat to a lot of family activities. It's only a little update today, with work done sheeting the nose section and some work done for the windshield.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving all!

Watching you build this kit reminds me how much fun kit building can be. You're doing a great job, too. I have been building from plans, my own and others, for the last few airplanes and my brain hurts. I might have to drag out one of my kits and enjoy.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi Guys,

Well, just a little done over the last week or so...but that's really it for the next month as I've put the kit away to make space for family visiting.

I rough-shaped the windshield block, and added the framework for the top portion of the windshield to the wing. The next step will require some time (shaping the fairing blocks) so that'll definitely be next year.

Hey Ken looking great.

You going to hold the wing on with rubber bolts (lacky's) or make it a bolt on?

It's not like you will be using it to learn to fly after all.

Hi Jim,

I did think about making it a bolt-on wing, but decided to keep it "authentic" as it were? As with many of my decisions, I actually question the wisdom/sanity of my choices. :-p.

I think I'll just resolve not to practice F17 with the Kadet. :-D

Ken

Hahahaha.

Where is you sence of adventure gone Ken? LOL
Ok F17 might be a bit ambitious for the Kadet but the P17's not that out of reach ;-)

Oh! sorry Skylark Flier The P and F17 are the top pattern schedules for the next 2 years.
P is the Preliminary and the F is more complex for the flyoff.
Ken and I used to battle it out together at comps up till earlier this year.

Hi Mike, Jim,

I neglected to thank you for the nice comments...so, thank you! I forgot to add, Jim, that I also thought to go the rubber band route because I'm treating this as a "building" trainer for myself and I felt I should entrust myself to the guidance of the manual and plan. It has been quite educational - I've come across places where I needed to refer to the plans because of a shortcoming in the manual.

I know with experience building gets easier, but I'm still in awe of people who can build so quickly and neatly! (Took me over a month just to build a wing)

Happy holidays everyone...
Ken

Well SIG does sell the bands in large boxes and if you store them in a ziplock bag with some baby powder a set will last all season.

Okay guys, any updates? My plans got put on hold due to the FAA's power grab and drone fights as the wife doesn't want me to spend the cash on something I may not be able to use in the end

Outside of the need to register, I don't see any immediate impact by the FAA rules. My 29% Luscombe is still on my agenda, with no plans to halt, or even slow down, construction.

Just got back into it...this bit's going a bit slowly - shaping the fairing blocks over the wing center section. Only rough shaping done so far.

Cheers

More rough shaping of the fairing blocks, at this stage with some help from handy paper templates (again). Ready to be glued to the wing for final shaping.

Thanks guys...

I was apprehensive about making those fairings too, but the templates in the plans and some 80 grit sandpaper wrapped around a large dowel (and also some glued to a popsicle stick) helped get the shaping done without too much hassle...just a lot of balsa dust.

Progress is slow at the moment as I await the arrival of some Dubro EZ Connectors - I need that to determine the height/location of the nosewheel steering cable hole in the firewall (see photo 2 below). There is one in the kit but I felt it was too small/delicate for my taste so I ordered new ones. But in the meantime at least I did glue in the basswood servo rails for the fuse. They're just a little lower than in the plans (maybe 1/8") to allow more wiggle room for the aileron servo and linkages...

Ken

I got my EZ Connectors in the mail so I did just a bit of work...I managed to install the nosewheel steering connector and so mark the firewall for the steering cable. I also got all the servos in place (though I don't have any pics of the aileron one at the moment), and drilled out both the firewall and former for the nosewheel and throttle cables.

In the process of getting the servos in, I discovered something neat by accident...I found getting the brass inserts into the rubber grommets quite difficult with these JR servos (maybe I'm just getting clumsier with age), but with a set of ball-link pliers the job goes so much easier! Rather than explain with words I'll let the picture below tell the story.

Now I've just got to make the scrap balsa standoffs for the two cables and I'll be able to brush on a couple of coats of Balsarite to fuel proof the tank compartment. After that I can glue in the throttle and nosewheel cable guides and get to finally finish sheeting the fuse!
