Hi Mike (FlyerinOKC-hope I remembered your name correctly), thanks for the vote of confidence. I'm trying my best, but a lot of this is new to me, so hopefully! :-)

You remembered correctly Ken. I saw a set of plans that reminded me of a Kadet, are you up to trying your had at plans building? Here is an interesting design from Phil Kraft from back in 1963.

Hi Mike,
Yeah I saw that Kraft bipe plan you posted on another thread too. It's a really lovely bipe actually, and it really does remind you of a Kadet! I'd love to try that one day...I don't mind trying my hand at plans building sometime in the future. (As long as I can get my hand on the necessary hardware like landing gear).
Cheers,
Ken

Hi guys,
Marking of the paint scheme on the airframe done! (I have a hard time believing it myself). I just need to mark out the gray-trim (would it be wrong to call it pin-striping?) and I can start painting. I'm going to start by covering some scrap wood with Solartex and see how the paint goes on.

An alternative method would be to paint the base color, and then mask the trim. Automotive tape is often used for pin striping.

Hinge knuckle gap may promote flutter - may want to consider relief for knuckle to eliminate gap on all control surfaces as stated in post #56 - had an aileron failure due to hinge gap from personal experience. Another alternative is to tape hinge lines.

Whew! Still masking patterns out in preparation for painting....I did not expect masking to be such time consuming and tiring work! Couple of pics of the masking progress, and one of a test piece for how the masking tape and paint handled. Interestingly, it looks like the gray just needs 3 coats, and the black will be fine with 2 coats, but the red needs 4-5 coats to look its best.

Ken, I'm a bit slow so bear with me. Are you going to paint the plane and leave under the masking tape plain covering color?
Or are you planning on re masking the pinstripes later?
I did this plane all white first, then the black nose, covered the nose and then the green.
When the tape and paper was removed the white accent stripes were revealed.
Is this what you are planning?

Hi all,
My apologies for the late reply. It's been a busy time. I'm going with a route that I feel is best for weight savings (being mindful it is a smallish plane). I think rather than explain further what I'm doing I'll let the photos do the talking...
Cheers!

If I might - you really don't want to lose ALL the dihedral, it makes the wings look like they're drooping.
Dropping to about .5" works just fine though.
Just a thought.

Ken, your build is really turning out nice!
I am watching with great interest, the covering stage is where I stalled out on mine. I need to get back on it and get it finished and really like the Solartex and Nelsons paint approach. A couple questions if you don't mind.
Did you apply balsarite to the entire air frame before covering?
Does the masking tape come up without lifting the covering from the air frame?
Are you applying the paint with a foam brush?
Are you using the cross-linker in each Coat?
Thanks,
Don
