The included "sticky" decals were totally inadequate and way off scale. I had Dennis Kirby of Kirby's Kustom Graphics make me a set of vinyl markings to my specs.
I have been using Kirby's for years. Fast and excellent quality.

The wings are secured with two set screws from the underside. These 'dig' into the aluminum spars. SEE THE PIX below...

Tomorrow (Saturday) I have a Golden Age Fly In at my RC field - our 10th annual. As the Gee Bee isn't quite ready to fly, it will be on display only.
I will take some pictures and post them Saturday eve or Sunday.

You wouldn't want to maiden at a fly in anyway. We had a scale fly at my field today. The two notables were a 1/3 p-38 that was unbelievable. Another guy had a Zirolli Stuka that had air brakes and a siren! A lot of 3-d guys claiming "scale" of course (and rightfully so). Pretty good turn-out. How'd yours go?

We had a great turn out at our 10th Annual Golden Age Fly In. Here are some pix of my (almost) ready-to-fly Byron Gee Bee R2...

Allright, we've stroked your ego enough, when's the maiden? Kidding, but really looking forward to it.

I don't have a maiden date in mind yet. I still have to configure the choke and fuel lines and check/adjust balance. I will also do a final weigh-in.
I always run a plane at home and check everything out before taking it to the field.
IF I have time to get these things done to my satisfaction, perhaps this weekend I will maiden... no idea
Just enjoying the finished product for now...

WEIGHT and BALANCE:

Well, I would say it is essentially "good news"...
The plane will require 4 ounces of weight way out on the nose to properly balance at the factory CG indents on the fuselage; this will be achieved with a Harry Higley Ultra Heavy Hub

As it sits, the plane weighs 23 pounds, 8 ounces. With the addition of the hub, ready-to-fly weight will be 23 pounds, 12 ounces.
The manual states, "Flying weights for this model should range from between 23 to 25 pounds depending on the builder, equipment installed and/or amount of scale detail work"

I will order the hub ASAP and in the meantime, run the plane at home and check everything out. Once I have the hub, she will be ready to fly.

I just bought a Harry Higley Heavy Hub and locknut to balance out my J-3 Cub. It was great way to add a good looking hub and add needed nose weight.

OK so the first problems I smoked out with an initial run in front of the house.... something is wrong with the ignition or the ignition cut-off (I strongly suspect the DLE igntion cut-off)
When throttling up, the engine cuts out as if the ignition is going on then off then on then off...
I also found that within 5 minutes those neat plastic flying wires on the underside are TOAST!
These will have to be remade from metal rods or cable.
Figuring out why the engine is cutting out will be a bit more trouble...
It NEVER did anything like this on the bench, and the only difference between bench running and now, is the DLE ignition cut-off...

When the Saito was running on the bench, I was going directly to ignition battery and there were no problems.
In the plane, isolating the ignition is far more difficult as access to everything is behind the firewall.
I have installed a different Opto Kill and will test again today.

Here is the culprit... I have used these before with no issues, but this one is a problem. I purchased it from Tower, new, for this project. Hopefully, they will take it back.

Substituted a "42% Products" Opto Kill, which I found I had on hand. (unfortunately, 42% is no longer in business)
These units always worked great for me.

Tested engine and she is running SWEET!

Also ordered the Higley ultra heavy hub this morning... which, btw, is actually Sullivan products. Very nice folks - gave me the "Toledo" price and shipped it today

Very nice work on your plane. I just purchased the almost built Hostetler 1/4 scale which Thomas White (known as Invertmast on RC Scale Builder) was working on. As you can see from his build thread, it is perhaps the most scale GeeBee out there (including exact scale airfoil and rudder fidelity). He also modified some of Hostetler's design issues relative to weight savings so the plane which be much lighter than Hostetler's anticipated weight. In any event, will work on that once my Ziroli Stuka and some other planes in the line are done. Thomas purchased his flying wires and had them made from a company in Germany--if you need the info, just PM me. Martyt

Marty,
Congrats on acquiring what I would consider the finest example ever of a scale RC Gee Bee!! I did send you a PM.
