I installed the tail-wheel drive in the plane and mounted the tail feathers today. I built a little dam around my bottom bushing to locate it better, the bottom bushing is about an inch in length. There is a control arm attached to the bar that ties the rudder and tail-wheel together.

Man! This is looking GREAT! I've always loved Kadets, and own several, but I've never been a builder. I envy the skills that it takes to produce fine one-of-a-kind airplanes like this! I also have solvent, grass, and petroleum allergies, which is no fun, but I still fly!! Carry on!

Thanks, I'll post some pictures tomorrow, it's now got 2 coats of nitrate dope, 3 butyrate clear, 2 coats of B-25 Silver, (that stops the light from going through the silk and paint), 3 coats of white. I'm going to start with the color coats now.

Just got shivers from the close ups. The look and feel of doped silk connects me to so many great memories. Kind makes be want to go out and throw away all my plastic film! Thanks for the thread, it's already award winning.

Just adding some pictures.
The first is the plane with a couple of coats of white over the B-25 silver.
The second Is starting the windows.
The third is the final base color, Sandelwood.
Forth picture is of the windshield area.
I'm kind of stepping away from the normal colors used on models.

COOL! I'd like to place my order now: 80 inch wing, barn door ailerons, flaps, very little dihedral, taildragger set up, small gas engine, tundra tires for STOL flight! Easy enough, right? Looking good, my man! Blue skies!

Has anyone else noticed that Sig now list the Sr as 78", not 80"?
I may ink in barn door ailerons, I don't think it needs flaps, the wing tips effectively take some dihedral out, I hope I still have enough, taildraggers the only thing I fly except for jets.
I thought about making it a gasser, but my little guy gets scared of noisy motors. I did buy one of these for when he's not around
https://www.motionrc.com/collections...-for-rc-planes
that will make it sound like I have a real inverted V12 Ranger motor in it. I went with the 5" vintage wheels to keep it period correct.
Thanks, It's a lot of work learning how to dope and silk.

Correct me if I'm wrong but hasn't the Senior's wing always been 78"? I know when the ARF came out it was 80" I bought a partially POORLY built Senior kit that was from the 80's and it is 78"

Ok, I can't check, my plans got ate up in building the wing, and I can't measure the wing because the tips are different. I must have been thinking of another plane.
I want to paint but it's so hot the paint was drying in the air and it was like I was spraying sand on the plane. I'm going to try the max retarder and some extra thinner.

Yup! All the records I can find for the Kadet Sr., going back to its (SIGRC58) inauguration in 1985, show her as 78". Both ARF (SIGRC58ARF, SIGRC58EGARF) versions show her as 80.5". The newer sport version (SIGRC96EGARF) is 78".

Test flight went OK.
I've taken the Sr. out three times now, all of them windy days, but not the 102° I was trying to paint in. The plane is not completely finished, I have a lot of painting and detailing to do, but I wanted to see if it would fly. I added a lot behind the CG so I had to push the batteries forward some, the first few flights where slightly tail-heavy, about the way I would setup a sailplane. Speaking of sailplanes on Sunday I took off and at about four minutes and at about 200 feet I felt it go through a thermal, so I cut the motor off, at about thirteen minutes into the flight I was at about a 1000'. I'm surprised at how well it glides, my one field is a bit of a challenge to land at, but it seems to have no vices, no wing drop, just a slight nose drop is all you get in a stall. I'm using a 13 x 5 prop now and making about 625 watts. I flew with a 5000mah 5 cell battery, which the motor isn't rated for, just keeping the throttle at about ½ stick, when I landed at 14+ minutes I still had 45% in the battery.
I added a MrRCSound V4.1 sound system, you can see it in the last picture, the circuit board is mounted on the port wall and the speaker is mounted to the floor.
I made a video, I need a real video camera, but here it is:

The Power 52 is more motor than I have on mine. Mine has a HobbyKing 3548 900Kv motor, a Turnigy 70amp ESC, 5000mah 4 cell battery, with a 13 x 5 prop it makes 543 watts, the motor is rated for 815 watts and is kind of built into the plane, so I'm being carefully not to fry the motor. With the 13 x 5 prop it seems OK, I had a 11 x 6 on it and it seemed very underpowered. I'm getting about 11 minutes with reserve with the 5000mah battery, but because of the extra wood behind the CG I'm pushing the battery as far forward as I can to get it to balance. The plane was made to take the battery in the front air-intake, but the first time I did that I had second thoughts about doing that, so now I'm taking the wing off for the battery change, I may make a hatch this winter if it proves to be too much hassle. To keep from have to push the 5000mah battery so far forward I've ordered 2 6200mah Zippy batteries.
