you know Tom, I was thinking that the other month. I had bought the 2 larger medium bottles from Tower. That is what I had always built using. It was not setting near as fast. I was thinking to myself that I received a "bad" batch. biggest problem, I have a fresh bottle I just opened and it has that delay. parts fall apart on me. I end up using "kicker" which I prefer not to use. some manufacturer skimping on quality of the product.

I bought a new bottle of Foam Safe Gold from BSI recently and I have noticed a change. I wonder who makes Tower's CA?

With the longer cure times, I try to to resist the temptation use kicker to speed thing up. Kicker prohibits CA's ability to penetrate wood and create a strong bond by setting it too soon.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it ! LOL

I agree. Good story, stick to it! Just use the thin CA, does a wonderful job, just a little slower than before.

Maybe they are just trying to give you more time to pull your fingers apart?

Ah, it's a safety thing. The government probably got involved after 10's of people went in to emergency because they had there fingers glued together! Sounds about like the government doesn't it? At least California's government. Oh, don't get me started now!!!

Working on sheeting the bottom of the fuse. Just got back from the eye doctor though and my eyes are still dilated. We'll see how she looks when I am done with it.

I hope everything went well with the eye doctor. I went last month and my prescription had changed and now my distance vision is better and I can actually see to but a screw driver into a Phillips screw slot!

here's a pic of the bottom of mine. if you look closely, you can see color change in balsa sheeting. that is the point where the sheeting is installed in a cross grain direction. unfortunately, i do not have any other pics at this time to show proportion. you may look at side view of fuse on plans to see if they show "end" grain of balsa where it reflects sheeting on bottom of fuse. see if this gives more insight

Everything went great! Back in June of 2016 I had a detached retina in my left eye. After having that fixed I had to have cataract surgery. Before all that my vision wasn't perfect, not bad but not good either. Now my left eye is 20/20! I didn't realize how bad my cataracts were until I had the left eye done. So I had to go back and have the right eye done as well. It didn't have a detached retina but it still had a cataract. I almost wish it did though, that eye has not as good as the left. Hey, you wanted to know!

Thanks Ragwing, (mind if I call you RF for short?) but I already looked at that, my left eye is good, but not that good. LOL I think my brain needs to see the bottom straight on to comprehend what I'm seeing. It sure looks nice though. Good job!

I didn't get a chance to post anything yesterday, so here is a combination of things I did last night and things I did tonight.

I cut off the bottom formers so that I could turn my battery hatch into a removable cover for the landing gear as well. There's just something about sealing the LG in permanently that bothers me. Knowing my luck something will happen that I will have to get in there and fix. This just seems to make more sense.

Last night:

Tonight:

I still have to cut out for the LG so it's not totally complete.

Nice progress David! Thanks for sharing about your eyes. I know my wife has a little variance between eyes after cataract surgery but in her case she also has Macular degeneration to boot. So I'm sure that is part of it. I am starting to get cataracts but not anything to worry about yet. What was strange in my case this last exam was the change in my astigmatism. It really surprised the doctor he kept going back and checking again and again to make sure he was diagnosing correctly. I have been using him for over 20 years, his very thorough.

Finishing up the hatch. I changed my mind a few times along the way.

I must say, I'm not the most elegant builder out there, CA runs everywhere, mismatched lines along the hatch... Hopefully when I'm done the covering will hide a multitude of sins! And speaking of CA, I think the reason I'm getting more runs is that fact that it does not set instantly like it used to.

Last night and the night before I had KP duty. Today I have YM duty. Tomorrow I fly!!!

Read a bit here about BSI CA glue... I've used the odorless, or foam safe as they might call it... for years and found it equal to any other CA on the market. I've got planes that are many years old that I used that on with no problems, and it's still holding as it should.

David, the plane looks fantastic... keep up the good work. I'll look in when I can. Have a great weekend.

are you using thin or medium?

I know it is personal preference. I use medium to build. limits runs, not perfect though

Using both. Maybe I'll try to use the medium more.

Thanks, but I just hate it when I get the runs!

By the way, too much going on this weekend to work on the Citabria; yard work, flying, visiting my grand kids, spending time with my kids... all those day to day drudgeries we all have to go through from time to time. Didn't want y'all to think I was reverting to my old self.

Take care!

I can relate yesterday was the first time I got time on an airplane in a couple of months. Granted it was mostly rough cutting ply and do a preliminary forming for a turtleback but it was a start. As you can see one of my favorite clamping tools is Blue Painter's tape.

I like the idea of a removable hatch to access the landing gear should it need to be removed/replaced. My concern however would be the flexing of the landing gear on let's say not optimal landings...there isn't much room as you've got the balsa pretty tight against the gear.

Yep, actually I knew that (really, I did!). I will determine how far it needs to be opened up later. It's always easier taking it off than it is to put it on!

Since I'm typing here, I just realized I think I'm missing something. I don't think the build instructions cover it, but on the forum posts I'm referencing the out side of the cabin wall would seem to need some sort of sheeting. As I got the plane, there was no sheeting there, just on the bottom half. I don't know if I saw it on the plans either. And since I don't have the plans in front of me... If it does require some sort of sheeting, what would it be; balsa or ply? The inside of the cabin has ply already, so my thought is balsa should be strong enough. Any thoughts? (See red outlined area of reference photo.)

Never mind! I answer my own question. First thing I did when I got home was look at the plans again. Sure enough, it show 1/8" balsa. Now to get to work on it... until I have to leave in just a little bit. DOH!

I got started on the cabin exterior sheeting tonight. I dug through the box of wood that's left over and what do ya know, I found a sheet that was already marked for this task! Thanks Clyde! (That's the name of the guy how started the build, but was called home before he could finish.) I was wondering how I was going to get that, either by tracing the plans, which may have been a slightly different size, or just by measuring, using my T-Bevel, etc.. That saved me a bunch of time!

So I cut out what he had traced on the balsa, but left plenty so I could make sure it matched what was already on the inside of the cabin area. But then to make sure I got it sanded down perfectly straight, I used my combination square blade and a piece of wood and clamps. Works great! You just don't want to sand down too far and damage the blade!

I'll get to side 2 tomorrow hopefully.
