Bud Nosen Citabria 40 Kit Build

Okay, so with all your combined knowledge and experience, how does this look? Be honest now, I can take it!... (uh-oh )
I took my time, measured, re-measured. Then I made sure the stab is level with the wings. Then with it all pinned together I carried it into the living room for this photo op. It's all ready to glue down, except for some final touch-up to the stab and hinging, which I figure will be much easier before the stab is glued down.

Hey guys, I'm back! My how life just keeps getting in the way of living! Too much OT again on a stressful project; had to do two to three weeks worth of work in one week. Got it done though. And in my off time, to get rid of some of that stress and get my mind off of work, I went flying. But now that the OT is done, for the time being anyway, I was able to get a little more done on the Citabria. I once again measured and remeasured the stab then, when I got tired of measure, I epoxied it down. Did the same with the fin, setting it up at 0° incidence and square to the stab... which took a bit of sanding and shimming! Yeah, there was just enough twist in the fuse to throw it off. SHEESH! And one other thing I did was to rebuild the elevator. It was not straight from tip to tip, and the glue used (aliphatic) was cracking and chipped out rather easily. So since the dowel holding the two halves together was not flush with the LE of the elevator, I decided to cut another and epoxied it in place with Gel Magic. Love that stuff! Takes a while to cure, but that don't bother me none, I'm slow enough for it.
Note the dowel. Got a couple gaps, but I can just fill those. The dowel will not come lose now!
The fin was not glued down in these photos. When I was eye-balling everything I noticed a good lean in the fin, so I went to work. It's "Gel Magic-ed" in place now. I'll let it cure overnight. Got some vacation time coming, maybe I'll get a little more done, who knows!
And just for fun: Two Saturdays ago we were able to watch a buddy maiden his new pattern ship. That thing was flying great! Steady as a rock, straight ahead rolls... He could fly low too!

Welcome back! Was wondering where you went... Great job on the elevator there David, if you don't mind a suggestion. I would wrap glass cloth over the dowel, securing it to the elevator. That's a stress point that you don't want that to fail! Rest of the plane is looking very nice!
What happened, that tree jump in front of your plane!!!

I just wrapped my elevator joiner on my Cub. As you say, it's a stress point.

Finished up hinging the rudder today. Also got the motor mounted.
Tomorrow I will be out hopefully playing with my new toy. A fellow club member was selling his big stuff and I was lucky enough to snag this Hanger 9 Extra 300 complete with a DLE 111, Spektrum AR9110 Powersafe Rx, HS7954SH servos and two 2100mAh LiFe batteries for the Rx. For what I paid, it was a freaking steel!!!

Oh yeah! I had someone else maiden it for me. Then we "dumbed it down" for me since this is my first BIG BIRD. That thing flies really nice! It's a little different for landing although it wasn't a problem. Take off was a piece of cake as well. The only bad thing about it... the solder joints, which I found out were done by one of our LHS's. Found out too late that one of the batteries, (one of the two Rx batteries) had a lead pull out of the EC3 connector. It was flying on one battery which got drained half way through the third flight. The Rx kept cutting out and the plane stopped responding. She went into a drainage ditch at the end of the runway.
Now I'm looking for parts for this thing. At a minimum I need a cowl, and canopy. The fuse is repairable but a new one would be nice. The landing gear may be able to be straightened. So if anyone knows of some or all of these parts being available, let me know!

You are correct! If I had had one of those Rx's, my Taranis would have told me, and I would have landed immediately. I may stick with the Spektrum Power Safe Rx, but add a Taranis Rx just for the telemetry.

I'm thinking for of a FrSky X6R or even smaller. I won't be using it to control anything, just relay telemetry.
Why do you ask, Ken? Do you have one you wanted to give me?

I still have to build a sled for my big saw. First a proper work bench. After I finish outside jobs.
I'm in the middle of building a fence for the side of the front yard. Some piece of dog turd shot my dog thru the existing chain link fence. Cops would not even take the report. And can't cut his trigger finger off. $500 in vet bills. But a bench in the next few months, and some planes.
I started RC planes when I was late teens. Built a Heathkit 8 check single stick. Had bad solder connection on my second RC plane. That has been my only battery failure. Lucky and darn conservative on how much I can fly a plane.
Now I have had a lot of other proplems with RC planes. Princably a loose nut on the end of the sticks😂

Sorry that you had problems with your new bird, David.
It looks like an easy repair, from what I can see in the pics.
I fixed cowls in far worse shape than yours.
Good luck with the repairs !

Yep, glass cowls are not to hard to repair as long as they are not crumbled like wadded up like aluminum foil. A one off foam mold and laying up a glass cowl is not hard either.
Vincent, it was punk kid in the park next to our house. He lives a few houses down the fence line. They made a gate to the park from their backyard. I wanted to go down there at night and screw the gate with 3/8" lag screws and then cut the head's off the screws. I can't walk that far, and the lawn tractor would make to much noise. I'd get caught.
People who abuse animals at that age generally run into trouble with the law or other things.
I firmly believe all sin is, or will be paid for, 2000 years ago, or after death.

Ken, if I lived closer I'd come down and do it myself! I don't mind if people pick on me, but if you mess with my dog they will pay... OK I think my blood pressure is returning to normal now!

I agree Vincent. Mess with my family and it's on. My dog is family.
Anyway I got the last post in. Maybe in a week or 2 the fence will be done and I can let the dog outside by herself.
Hoping I can build my work bench in another month 2 tops.
I have airplanes wait for me.

Whoa! Just getting back to this thread. Ken, don't do anything! If you do the law will throw the book at you! I'm only a couple hours away. And if you can wait until Memorial Day Weekend, I'll be at the Castle Fly-In, you're only 40 minutes away. Oh, the kids about three houses down from us used to abuse their pets. One day they were out throwing a bunny up into the air and into the street, wife saw that, pretty sure it died. Now those kids are always in trouble!
Anyway, probably won't be getting too much done on this build for a while with a big repair job to do. I started a little bit of it tonight, finding little pieces to put the canopy back together. It won't be pretty for sure. I talked to one of the guys at our local field today, he's a hot-rod guy so he knows how to handle glassing things and will give me a hand repairing and repainting the cowl. The rest I think I can handle. She will fly again!
Take care,
David

Yeah, Wife gave me total hell when I mentioned what I wanted to do.
I see if I can buy a new battery for my electric scooter before castle.
This month our descrenary funds went to a nail gun and hose. Mom is buying the air compressor.
I may not be physically able to do some of the jobs I used to so I find ways to cheat and get 'er done anyway. Did someone mention power tools?
I find ways to sit while doing most jobs, including digging fence post holes.
Windy (wife) was taken to ER this morning by ambulance. Slid to the floor when she tried to get outta bed. We couldn't get her back up. Being a prior stroke victim, we took no chances. Paramedics found really low blood pressure. Hours later, many bags of fluids, ect, they now have it at an acceptable, abit somewhat low level. She will be kept overnight.
I'm going to order some Frysky Rx's and a TX modual for my Futaba 7uap and get a couple of planes flyable.

She is much better. Keeping her again. Lab results won't be back till tomorrow.
I worked more on the fence for a few hours after I brought her a Starbucks this morning. Then went home to work on fence and give little doggie some outside time.
Do you remember the little .25 powered plane with the plug in tips that had the warped wing. I disassembled the wing to save the L.E. ( a laminated bass and balsa), and the T.E., and airlerons. Well I had them stored nice and flat. I can't find the dang things now. I have new ribs ready to go. Looks like I have to make new ones so I can then find the lost ones.
Going to get an order off for some RX's, and a TX modual. Plus some covering film.
I intend to get back in the air soon. Be a good excuse to come up and fly with you..
