Ace 1/4 scale taylorcraft clipped wing- which engine is best???
I'm almost finished building a 1/4 scale clipped wing taylorcraft and I'm using poly fiber paint so I realize it will be a little heavier than some iron on coverings. I have a brand new DLE 40 twin and also a super nice running OS 160 twin that sounds so realistic. Just wondering which one of these two would be the best. I know that the DLE 40 will have more power but one of the recommended engines for the kit is a 160 four stroke and I don't have any desire to try to hover or 3D with this scale plane. Thanks for the help.

My first Ace Clipped Wing Taylorcraft was powered by an OS 1.20 four stroke. While it flew, I didn't feel that it had enough power. I installed a Saito 300 twin, and it became an awesome performer. LOL
My second T-Craft was powered by a G-26. It was an adequate performer, swinging an 18X6 prop.
My guess is that your 1.60 twin will provide adequate performance, but that you would be happier with the DLE 40cc.

If the 40cc doesn't disrupt the lines of the cowl too much I would go with that. While you might not be looking to hover, a clip wing is something that one generally hot dogs around with a bit and the additional power wold be handy. If you are looking to cruise around the sky and scale appearance is important then go with the twin. It sounds like your engine choice is driven by availability and many of us have been in that situation but if it were my choice I would split the difference and go with a 30 cc gas engine.
