Default GP P-51 Mustang Wing ?

I am wanting to sheet the top of the wing completely on my .40 Mustang and was wondering if it would be more of a benefit than a waste of time.

It won't be a benefit to the airplane. Only added weight. It would be a plus if you were building a super scale airplane, but the 40 Mustang is a stand-off look alike that flies very well as it is designed. Had one, about to build another.

Thanks. That is kind of what I thought.

I sheeted mine, and later wished that I hadn't

Minnflyer, Why did you wish that you hadn't? Did it affect the charecteristics of the plane or just make it to heavy?

In retrospect, I take that back

I was using a very heavy engine (Saito 80) and needed to compensate by adding a good amount of tail weight. Over all, the plane was too heavy. Adding the sheeting didn't help. However, once I had switched to a lighter engine, the sheeting was almost a non-factor.

Guys, if you use light weight balsa for the sheeting, as you should, it will make very little difference in the total weight. And virtually no difference as to CG. It will help unload your wallet a little, and add some extra time to the construction of the wing. It will have virtually no effect on the flying characteristics of the plane. If you use Monokote or Ultracote, it will make it slightly more difficult to cover (solid surfaces are more apt to bubble up). If you paint, it will be nicer. And heavier.

All said and done, just do it as you think you will like it....that's the fun thing about this hobby (and we don't have to ride in our creations!)

I built one of these.. Fully sheeted, covered in dope n fabric and painted, pnuematic retracts, OS 70 four stroke and so heavy I sold it before I flew it.

here's a link to some of it's pics during the painting process.
