Well another snag [:@]
I placed the Jett angled spacer on yesterday and I still don't clear the wing. SOOOO on to plan B. I'm going to place a spacer behind the engine mount as well as mount the engine sideways. The carb was a good bit higher than the center of the tank anyway so this will also eliminate any potential fuel draw problems. Unfortunately the fiberglass cowl will have to go since it was cut out for an upright install. These are no longer available from BTE. I may try to patch up this one or carve one from balsa.

SHE"S A KEEPER[8D]
I was able to maiden the "Delta Fighter" today. The 91FX with the JETT muffler was turning an APC 14x6 prop 11,400 on the ground. Ground handling good. Advanced the throttle and rotated at 1/2 throttle. Made some trim passes and she needed a few clicks of down trim and left aileron. She was alittle nose heavy but I erred on that side for the first few flights. Landing is a non event. Very stable in the air little role coupling on knife edge. The airbreaks do slow her but I thought they would do more.
After a couple of flights I added more tailweight and she performed even better. Landing slower with a nose up attitude. Had 5 flights total. All in all well worth the effort to rehab this ARF.
I'll try an APC 14x8 prop after a gallon break in.

RE: BTE Delta Vortex Construction Photos
Hi All,
A friend gave me his DV the other day; been sitting in his shop for several years. I am in the process of going through the plane now and replacing
anything that seems to be worn, rotten or unsafe. I have no idea of how to practically set this us or the best practices on controls, cg or really anything else.
I will be putting this on my Futaba 9C 2.4 ghz Radio and a 8 channel receiver. I could really use some advice on how to set this up for safe and docile flying (at least for now)
so I can get through the maiden flight and get use to the plane.
Any ideas on how to setup the mixing in the 9C would be very appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Rick

Hi Rick,
In my DX7 you just select "Delta" from the menu
I have one of these Delta Vortex that I bought BUILT for $25 on eBay, one of my best buys EVER
I have lots of info on this model, even have the Manual
Here is a link to grab the manual: http://www.btemodels.com/vortex.html
Look under the red box on the left of page under "Delta Vortex Resources"
Good Luck!
Joe
Another of my wings, an 80 inch

What size engine are you planning on putting into it? I use an OS-91 and 15x6 prop, and throttle back unless you want a rocket on your hands.....
Oh, by the way, glad you're putting in a 2.4 GHz radio... that way, you won't forget to extend your antenna the way certain folks on this thead did (ala myself) and cause the early demise of their favorite plane...

The1User, thank you for the information... it is very much appreciated!
What are you using for a low rate and a high rate on the ailerons?
N1EDM, the plane has everything in it... servos, receiver, fuel tank and engine. The engine is a Super Tiger 75 2 stroke; the servos are goo hitec brand so no issues there.
I will be swapping out the receiver and I will pull the tank and replace all of the fuel tubing.

That sounds good... and, if you don't mind my being nosey one more time, I'm curious about the Hitec servos. If they are standard servos (40 oz/in) then you might want to run two of them per elevon. That was how my DV came (bought it at an auction with servos included). I replaced the two standard servos and am now running a single high-power digital servo.
I lost mine due to dumb digits - i.e., I forgot to extend the antenna. I already have another kit in hand. Not sure when I will get to it, though.

I can't believe that I found this thread again.
I have a friend who found a BTE kit and may want to electrify it. Has anyone here had any experience with that, regarding motor size, prop, ESC, etc.?? I thought that I'd read about that somewhere but can't find the reference to it.
Thanks,
Bob

If anyone is still checking in to this thread, I thought that I would mention that Bruce Tharpe has just made another run of Delta Vortex kits. Mine will be on order very shortly. I wish that I could afford two of them. I'm only passing this around as a favor to anyone interested in getting another Delta Vortex, because they have been hard to come by.

Several years ago I built Bruce's Delta Vortex. Great kit. Can't believe he's still selling for $149. You couldn't buy the wood for that price. Again, great kit

I built one last year from a kit that I had stashed. It went together beautifully. I don't think that I've ever heard anyone criticize a Bruce Tharpe kit.
I'm still flying that last one. I hope to be able to kitbash this one into something like a semi-scale Dyke Delta. If the gods smile on me, I might even get another kit in a month or two just to have a 'spare for the spare'. Love that plane.

airbusdrvr, Hmmm, $149 not enough? I can change that!!! Just for you though
Bob, Thanks for all the nice things you say about the DV, and all of my kits for that matter. Since you mentioned kit-bashing, I love what some guys are doing with the DV. The design is pretty basic, which seems to get the creative juices flowing in a lot of builders. On my website is a Builders Gallery with pics and info on customer-built Delta Vortexes (Vortices?). Be sure to check it out...

High Bruce, Let's see. I built your Venture, Flying King, Wonder and didn't you have something to do with the Four Star? I still have two unopened Venture kits. One being the very first kit that you sold(kit #2). And yes, $149 is a bargain for the Vortex.

Hi!
i have just finished building my DV, ready for covering.. Engine will be an JBA 91 with stock muffler. The kit quality was very good, as espected, since I build the Reaction 54 from BTE last year(fantastic kit!!) Looking foreward to fly it!
Best regards from Svenn, Norway

Svennoe, you're going to love it. Give us a shot of the covering scheme when it's covered...
When I built mine, I buried some blind nuts into the inside of the tip ribs. I put some 1" squares of lite ply on the inside of the rib first to spread the load... I haven't done it yet, but my plan is to make some wingtip dams that I can screw into the tip ribs and see if that makes a difference. Any thoughts on that, Bruce??? I've got another Delta Vortex kit and a Venture 60 kit in the wings....

Looks great Svenn, hope you enjoy flying it!
Bob, I guess "wingtip dams" might make some sort of difference. Not sure what kind of difference you are looking for :-) Can't imagine they would do anything bad, so give it a try and let us know... FWIW, I've always daydreamed about putting model rockets on the tips, like sidewinder missiles. Non functional, just for looks - model would need a military color scheme to pull it off...

Thanks!
I dont like the coverjob, so I usually end up with something simple and boring....but time will show. I forgot to write about my (simple)modification. I cut the enginebox with 1 1/4 inch (to avoid lead in the tail)and moved throttle and steeringservo aft CG. I think I will cut the trailing edge for an center elevator..

Thanks for that, Svennoe... There are a lot of covering schemes off of Bruce's website that might give you some ideas.
Bruce, I have no idea what to expect either with those wingtip plates, I just wanted to experiment. I'm thinking that it might reduce drag somewhat by reducing wingtip vortices. I will have to keep them on the small side because I'm concerned that larger ones would act like fixed fins and perhaps create some unwanted situation if the plane should yaw, due to their drag.
My DV needs some repair though... that's my next project. Not a fault of the plane though. The engine lost power and then quit just after takeoff and I wasn't able to make it back to the field. I'll have to repair some internal damage but it doesn't look as bad as it could have been, given the cartwheeling that it went through, landing in the rough as it did. I think that the damage could have been worse. Part of the damage was done when the tailweight broke loose and rattled around in the fuselage after the unplanned landing.
But I love your idea about the missiles.... Can't wait to get it back into the air, with those on the wingtips... better look for some model rocket parts that would work perfectly for that.
Thanks for the idea.

I got my Delta Vortex used about 4 years ago for 60.00 I have sense gone up to a AX95 to help it out with speed. I was wanting to know if retracts would make a big difference with speed without it killing the way it fly's? Is there enough spar to hold the load? I have an old set of Kraft electrics for it. I have close to 100 flights without any problems and is my go to plane.

I bought my BTE Delta Vortex Wing in December hanging up at the local hobby shop. It was a Bind N' Fly. I was not sure how old the electronics were, but the receiver was a high end 72mhz Futaba PCM receiver, The motor is a Super Tiger .75. I have been wanting a delta wing for a while, and when I saw this one I could not pass it up. I decided to modernize this bird. I will be flying this bird with my Hitec Aurora 9X and a Hitec Optima 7 receiver. I converted it over to electric and installed a nose wheel retract. I also, replaced the old canopy. and built a new canopy hatch for ease of access. My current power setup is this: Turnigy 50-65 400 KV motor. Turnigy Plush 80 amp ESC. Castle Creations 10 amp BEC. An APC 15X7e prop. Battery is 6s 5000mah. The twin rudders are also airbrakes. The rudders angle into each other for drag. It will be a couple of weeks before I can get out and fly it. Below are some pics of before and after.
