Default Winter project: TF Sea Fury

Hey guys! Just Started building a Top Flite Sea Fury I got for Christmas and started building it today.

Anyway looks to be a very nice kit (as far as die-cutting goes) and an easy build. Lot of parts though.
What engines and retracts are you using and what mods have you guys done to improve on it.
Any tips on building it?

I would also love to see some pics of this plane.
Will keep you posted with my progress.

David

Well, just about got the rudder/fin assembly completed. It went together pretty well.
I have heard this plane has a weight issue in the tail so I used the lightest sheeting possible.

From the photos it looks like typical Top Flite construction methods.....should be a nice flying bird and yes, keep the tail weight down!

Out of all the TF war bird series I like the Sea Fury the most...I might just build one someday when I get some extra time[sm=bananahead.gif]...like I have a bunch of that.

Ha David...at this rate of construction you will be done long before winter is over, then if you are like me you will be chomping at the bit to get it airborn

I wonder if T.F. is going to do a 1/4 sc. of the Sea Fury....? That would be really nice. What gear are you going to use??...oops just re-read your thread...the prez of our club did a S.F but I think it was the old Direct Connections kit...will e-mail him on Monday to find out.

If and when I do a S.F I will most likely use my O.S 1.20 III Surpass/pumper. It will probably stick out of the cowl but it should really hook up good with the OS in it

I built the TF Corsair, P 40 and the P 51 and the only real let down was the P 40...it flew like it was tied to a post...I don't think I had 1 good landing in the 2 seasons I had it. The narrow gear was a nightmare.

The stang and the Corsair were damn good flying planes. The stang flew like a heavy pattern ship..it was on rails. The Corsair was really what got peoples attention tho...low, full throttle, gear up was sweet.

Dang it...now I want a S.F....thanks a lot David

Ya, That's what I was thinking, somewhere along a 1.20 because where I fly is about 5,500ft above sea level.

Havn't decided on the landing gear yet but I think it will be CJM.

I'm just scared that I will have to add like 3lbs to the nose but we will see.

I will keep posting pictures on my progress.

Thanks
David

The best engine for this plane would be the RCV 120-SP, which weighs around 3 ounces more than the OS 1.20 Surpass III pumper. You will need all the nose weight you can get. Plus, the RCV doesn't stick out of the cowl. The drawback to using an RCV 120 is finding a 5-bladed prop for it to spin.

I don't know if the prop will clear the ground. I hear those things swing a 22" prop

The TF Sea Fury has pretty long landing gear struts and a nose-high stance, so you will have enough ground clearance for a 22" two-blade prop. The RCV 120 can swing a 20x12 2-blade prop, a 15.75x13 3-blade prop, or a 15.5x12 4-blade prop. My guess is that it will be able to swing a 15.5x11 5-blade prop. Wouldn't that be cool to fly on a 5-blade prop?

I have not run across a 5-bladed prop yet. Maybe [link=http://www.zingerpropeller.com/4_bladed_propeller.htm]Zinger[/link] can custom make you one since they already have 4-bladed props with replaceable blades. I don't think it would be that hard to adapt the hub for an extra blade.
