Default Pica P-40 1/5 scale kit

I started building this kit last week, this is my first Pica kit but I can tell you it won't be my last , unless there are some surprises awaiting me. Both wing halves are framed ready to join and I have worked on it a total of about 3 hours, If anyone else has built this kit let me know, it's going together so well that I am worried about something bad popping up in the latter stages....Thanks, Bud......

Default p40

hi bud, mine flies great. are ya using retracts? if not make note that the gear leg is inserted in wing under the belly pan. ya may want to move those blocks out and shorten the securing leg in case of future repairs. this way the pan doesn't have to be removed. also wheels need to be forward to avoid noseovers. i put a ys91 in mine and it flies great. it was built by some1 else and never flown and i had to "resurrect' it to make it flyable......it does flie great tho. i believe it finished at 12 lb also with everything in it.

Hey Tinman, no retracts, can't afford them for this, I have a Magnum 1.80 to put in this one, just looking over the wing after joining it. It does not look like 86" untill you pull it off the board! I crashed my Zero big time and will be pouring on the coal with this project, to get back in the air soon.......Bud

Default Pica P-40 1/5 scale kit

In the September 2001 issue of RCModeler, there is a great article on the 1/5th scale PICA P-40. It had a Zenoah G-38 with a remote controlled electric starter.

Default Pica P-40 1/5 scale kit

Hi Budcop, here's a pic of the 1/6 Pica P-40 built by good friend Chuck Hamilton in Indiana. I don't know if Chuck hangs out here at RCU but I don't think he'll mind if I show off his handiwork. Neither of the Pica P-40 kits is very scale but, as you can see, with a little patience a nice sport scale bird is possible. Good luck with yours, Chad Veich.

Default Pica P-40 1/5 scale kit

Chad
Thanks for the kind words about my P-40. However, my P-40 is the 1/5 scale version.
Budcop,
Like Chad said this is not a scale kit . It is a "Stand-off" kit.
To make it "more" scale required more work than I should have on a sport scale job. Here's some things I did:
Sliding Canopy
Robart Gear
Quadra 42
Trim Tabs
Scale Exhaust
Retracting Tail wheel with doors
Hinge gap covers
Hidden switches
Landing light covers
Full cockpit
Panel Lines
Raised and Flush Rivets
Latex Finish
All up weight 23 pounds
I'll try to answer Q's as soon as I can.

Chuck

Hi Chuck, good to see you on board at RCU. Not sure why I thought your bird was 1/6 scale but thanks for the correction. Let us know how it flies Chuck. Regards, Chad.

Default Pica P-40 1/5 scale kit

Chad,
I have flown the P-40 4 times now and only one word can describe it "Floater". The Quarda 42 I have in it is second hand and I think it has problems. The engine is coming out to be bench ran. It is not coming up on thr R's like it should. However the plane just flew around slowly with no bad traits at all. (but I still want more power). One word of caution on this kit . The Pica spinner back plate flexs and distorts badly. It actually cut into the nose of the aircraft. I need to have a stronger one made. I have e-mailed Pica but with no success. Also note the gear length is too short for most grass fields and the wheels are about 2" too small.
Regards,
Chuck

Chuck

Which set of Robart mains are you using? The one in RC Modeler had the larger 150 gear. I just started the 1/5 scale kit myself and so far it's very nice. I'd like to know more about your finish.

Thanks

Hemi,
I used the same Robart gear that is in Top Flites Giant Corsair. (that's what Robart recommended to me). However I still think the gear is too short. I would call Robart and see if they could extend the struts by about 2". If you use Robarts' gear you will have to make some mods to the wing because the bottom spar is in the way. Let me know if I can Help.

Chuck
