Goldberg Sukhoi
I am planning out my goldberg sukhoi's construction and have come to a bit of a hitch. I have a moki 1.35 with a radial backplate mount. The backplate mount will hang off the front of the engine box. I thought I could do this: expand the size of the firewall by a half an inch all around, and make an accordingly larger engine box. However, where the engine box attaches to the firewall there is no room to expand the engine box. So, is it okay if the moki's mounting holes are right near the edges of the firewall? Is there anything I could do to beef it up? I figure I could cut some new engine box parts out of 1/8" or 1/4" birch and peg the pieces together, is that necessary though? Let me know your thoughts.
Thanks,
Chris

RE: Goldberg Sukhoi
Chris--My CG Sukhoi has been through 3 different engines. The most recent is a Bennett Built G26. I had a similar issue with this enging as one side extended out past the edge of the box. I used hardwood blocks epoxied to the side of the engine box, flush with the front. On the backside of the blocks, I use triangle stock in places where there is not mounting bolt. You can also pin the block to the engine box, but at least on mine, this has not been necessary. This only took a little bit of time and has proved to be very strong and reliable. The plane flies great with the engine and an APC 18x6W prop. A little higer wing loading than my old YS140L had, but the plane still flies great. You'll love the plane and it should be a good combo with the engine you have. Good luck.

RE: Goldberg Sukhoi
thanks for the info....a sigh of relief for me. I am going to expand the firewall by a half an inch on the bottom and sides, because there is room for that. The blind nuts on the back of the firewall might need some tender loving care to figure out but I will make new engine box sides and bottom with 1/8" birch and a new firewall without the v-cutout at the top out of 1/4" birch, After pegging it all together I shouldnt have anything to worry about and not much more weight (a few ounces, but I have some carbon landing gear that have really lightened things up)
Thanks again Ron,
Chris
