Tail wheel sizes
What are people using for a tail wheel size for a 4 Star 40?
And a Venture 60?
I fly off of grass.
Im looking at the 3/4" Dubro for the 4 Star 40 and a 1" Dubro for the Venture 60.
Im also looking at getting the Med Sullivan Tailwheel set for each of them.
Thank you!

RE: Tail wheel sizes
Tail wheel on a typical sport modle (4*40... 4*120... but not a Fokker Dr1 ) about 1/4 to 1/3 the size of the main wheels. It will look right.
Larger or smaller may work... but they probably won't look right. There is no RULE that says the tailwheel can't be LARGER then the mains... but it would sure look goofy if you tried it.

The sizes you have mentioned will be just fine. The 4 star's tail will be airbourne shortly after you apply power so you are only talking about taxing it to the runway. Mine has a 3/4 inch, but I fly off asphalt, however I think you will be just fine. Good Luck, Dave

RE: Tail wheel sizes
doesn't really matter what size as long as it can support the plane. Mostly people choose tailwheel size for looks. I'm putting a 1/2" tailwheel on my current .52 size plane and while it looks really tiny, it will taxi fine on grass or asphalt.

Changing tail wheels is the easiest way to fine tune the c.g. location, so keep it in mind if you want to lighten or load the tail more later.

RE: Tail wheel sizes
I used a the Sullivan wheel, 1" if I remember correctly, mainly because the hole for the axle is small and fits the stock tail wheel bracket. Most commercial tail wheels are drilled for a larger axle and if used would be sloppy. Also, the rudder is made from thin balsa so I would recommend making a "U" shaped bracket from brass or epoxy tape around the area the tiller is drilled into the rudder. If you don't strengthen the balsa around the tiller it will likely break on landings that aren't perfect.

RE: Tail wheel sizes
I prefer the Dubro tailwheel because the aluminum hub is not recessed in as far as the Sullivan. I had a Sullivan tailwheel fitted on a Sullivan tailwheel bracket and the rubber was rubbing on the tailwheel wire. I had to use two wheel collars, whereas with the Dubro I only need one collar. FWIW
