Question about basswood and spurce.
Well what it all boils down to is that i have a kit and the main wing spars (basswood) are a bit bent (to say the least). So went down to the hobby store, they didnt have in stock basswood in that size. They however had a mighty fine selection of spurce in the sizes needed. Would it be allright to substitute spurce for basswood (in a wing spar for a GP Extra 300 .60, wingspan 64") Any and all comments, help greatly appreciated.

Yes. I personally prefer spruce to basswood but the spruce (in small sizes) is getting more difficult to find. A lot of the mail-order balsawood dealers no longer list spruce.

For the same size... spruce is marginaly stronger than basswood. Weight is about the same. Its easier to get a good clue joint with the basswood than spruce with some glues.
If given a choice I'll use spruce every time.

Spruce is usually better for spars than basswood. However basswood takes screws better for servo and engine mounts. Spruce seems less rigid and less likely to snap under the same loads.

Heavens yes!!!
Spruce may add an ounce or two to your plane, but it is stronger than basswood. Basswod basically has become more popular as of late, since good spruce is getting harder to find. Basswood is basically a compromise to spruce, which is gennerally prefered for wing spars. If your LHS carries good spruce that will match your spar measurement needs, then by all means use it.
