Default CG Chipmunk - any reason to avoid buying a ten-year-old kit?

I built one of these things when I was in middle school in the late'80s. I still have it and it flies great (got a Saito 100 on it) but it looks like hell and I would like to build another and install pull-pulls and two aileron servos. Kits are occasionally available on eBay but I think they are many years old. Is there any reason to stay away from an old CG Chipmunk kit? Does balsa deteriorate or get brittle? Also, has CG changed the design of the Chipmunk? If so, could I just incorporate any changes as I build? Thanks for your time.

Not at all. If you can get a deal then go for it. The newer Chipmunk kits now have a fiberglass cowl verses the older kits that have the 2 piece abs cowls. The newer cowls are much nicer, so it might be a question you might want to ask befor bidding or buying. Good Luck, Dave

I bought an old Ultimate kit. Judging by the appearance of the box, it was pretty old. The wood and materials were in perfect condition. I did end up buying glass cowling and wheel pants though.

I just finished building my CG Chipmunk two weeks ago. It was an old kit that had been in a friend's attic for for the past twenty years. I replaced most of the wing sheeting because it was very brittle and would break very easy. I also replaced the hardwood wing spars with hard balsa because they were very heavy (saved 4 oz.). Other than that, I didn't have any problems. I replaced the plastic cowl and wheel pants with fiberglass ones, used dual aileron servos and added the optional flaps. It is powered with an OS 90 FX engine and flies like a dream...........RS
