I AM CURRENTLY GETTING THIS PLANE TOGETHER AND AM WONDERING IF THERE ARE ANY POINTERS OR TIPS I SHOULD KNOW ABOUT. ALSO WHAT WOULD A GOOD ENGINE CHOICE BE FOR THIS PLANE. IT DOESNT HAVE TO BE A SCREAMER BUT CAPABLE OF SOME TRICKS.. ID LIKE TO HEAR OF WHAT PEOPLE HAVE ON IT AND HOW IT FLIES.. THANKS

I built a flew one of these a long time ago. I liked the kit a lot. The only thing I did different was to beef up the wing strut mounting points. Use extra plywood pads where the screws go. The idea is to spread the load for rough landings and the like. Oh yea, I used 1/2-20 nylon bolts for the bottom wing and landing gear. Glass the lower wing to 1 inch beyond the fuse side.
I only used a OS 91-4C and it was great for standard aerobatics. It would knife edge easily but not do a knife edge loop. No 3D, of course. I have heard of people use huge engines on this plane. If you use a light weight engine, it will literally float down to perfect three point landings. You'll look like a pro. You can also fly low, slow, and close-in. I bet any 120-4C would be even better than the 91 without much more speed on landing. The YS 90 would also be good. No use using a 2 stroke. It just aint right for a bipe.
You will absolutely love this plane. Once you get it properly trimmed for aerobatics, it will be a pure pleasure to do all the aerobatic maneuvers. I learned a many new tricks with it.

Oops, I thought we were talking about the CG Ultimate.
I think the biggest challenge with the Great Planes Ultimate is keeping the weight low. It is quite small for an aerobatic bipe. I am using a Saito 72 in a GP Extra and it's great. This engine would also be good in their Ultimate. Again, watch your weight.

My GP Ultimate
I am just finishing my Ultimate and only made a few mods. The first of the mods was to change the bottom wing into a 2 servo setup. I did this because I did not like the idea of 2 torque rods and then 2 more linkages going up to the top wing. Sounded like a great combination for flutter. My second mod was to add a Pull-Pull setup for the rudder (Yet to be installed). Finally, I changed to tailwheel to a Ohio RC type (Can use a sullivan also). I did this because I have never liked the hinge type tail wheel setup.
I also put an O.S. .70 Surpass II up front
Cowl is from Stans Fibertech

Pic of the front of the plane
Just a shot of the cowl and some of the plane.
For more info on this plane I started a thread at this forum.

WELL IM ON THE FINAL BUILDING STAGES OF THE KIT. BEFORE I CAN GO MUCH FARTHER THOUGH I NEED TO FIGURE OUT WHAT ENGINE I WILL BE USING IN IT. BEEN TOLD THE BIPES DO BETTER WITH 4 STROKE ENGINES SO I THINK I WILL TRY TO GO THAT ROUTE. MAYBE A 61-70. HOWS YOURS COMING ALONG? :spinnyeye

My son has had one for 4 or 5 years now. He has an OS .46FX in his and it flys ok. Little under powered, but does outlandish tricks with it. Definitely change over to two aileron servos, we recognized that potential problem when he built his. By the way, doesn't fly well on one wing. He found out when he forgot the wing nuts on the top wing!! OOPS!!!

I had one of these little beauties and it was GREAT!!! Put an OS 70 Surpass up front. It is the ideal engine for it. No mods were made on mine and the only thing I would suggest is to beef up the landing gear. Not the wood where the gear mounts... The aluminum gear itself. Two other guys and I had trouble with the gear spreading on anything but a perfect landing. I wound up putting a piece of 3/16 music wire on the bottom held in place with "J" bolts.

Here is mine!
I am almost done with the building process. I have all the radio gear in and just need to glue the wing hinges in. Should be ready shortly! I have an OS 70 up front so hopefully I will like the performance.
