Mustang Gear Doors, what's the best way?
I'm looking for a better way to mount my gear doors on my 60 size TF Mustang. I'm using 7/16 dia Robart Struts on a Century Jet Retract base. Anybody care to share any clever techniques?

RE: Mustang Gear Doors, what's the best way?
Actually I fiqured it out, wait until you see it! Dubro hinges with removable cotter pin, to attach top of gear door to side of retract housing via a homemade bracket. Tack in place with CA. Assemble the hinge, another small drop of CA and stick the door on, carefully aligning it with the gear bay. Remove the cotter pin to again seperate the door from the housing. Drill and fasten the hinges to both the strut door and bracket using 6 0-80 machine screws. Put the whole damn thing back together again and check alignment. The next trick is to create link from the strut to the strut door to pull it closed or push it open. Music wire, JB weld and tubing work well. The wire length is measured to insure that the door is far enough away from the wheel to prevent any contact with the strut door when open. The linkage and strut alignment have to be precise so again, another drop of CA and some nyrod tube will attach the music wire and tube to the strut door from the inside from the closed position. Open the gear and watch the door pull back and open while lifting itself away from the wheel. When satisfied, use JB weld to form a fillet over the tube, which is now mounted on the gear door.
Parts list:
2 small pieces of sheet aluminum for the bracket and the strut covers
JB Weld
Nyrod tubing (about 2")
music wire

Here's you pics. I tried to show you the most detail. The challenge was to get the wheel clearance when the gear was open and a flush fit into the wing when it was closed; note the location of the bottom of the strut cover over the wheel in the open and closed position. As for the wheel doors Mike, I don't think it's practical on a .60 size Mustang that gets flown as often as this one does.

I've got a 120 size P-51 no problem with the outer doors its the inner doors that are givin me fits.Picked up the Jomar gear & door sequencer it works great. Just lookin to see if maybe someone had a slick idea I could use>Thanks Anyway.Remember Never run out of altitude airspeed and ideas all at the same time-Mike
