Kit for HP VT-21 engine
A while back I bought an Austrian made Hirtenberger (sp?) VT-21 4-stroke just because it was so cool. I've heard they run so quiet that they rival the noise of electrics (which I don't care for). I would like to build a plane suitable for this engine, but I don't want something that will be too quick. I was thinking something like a Tiger Moth Bipe or maybe a Cub or Taylorcraft. This engine is heavier than most of same displacement, and I don't believe very powerful, so perhaps kit should be short nose moment with suggested displacement of .15 engine?
Have any of you run this little jewel of an engine? What are you flying it on?
Thanks for help/suggestions.

A Sig Kadet Seniorita would be great with your VT21. I fly one with an old OS FS20 and it's a perfect match. Although not a very powerful engine compared to the later 26 Surpass, I seldom if ever even have to open the throttle fully. I hand launch at walking speed. It's all about flying on the wing!

The HP 21 is a little less potent then the old OS 20. I had one years ago in the old Top Flite Elder 20 and it was hard pressed to take the thing off in short grass. We hand launched it usually. Your right that it is quiet and about the cheapest motor on fuel that I ever used.
There is one thing to watch out. The standard long plus will score the rotor unless you use a thick washer on the plug. Better to use a medium plug and make sure that it is a hot one. They will hand start after they are well broken in but why bother a touch of the starter and they are off and running.
A nice novelty motor and should last almost forever.

A lovely engine, runs like an electric fan. But very short on grunt. An old friend had one in a DennyPlane old-timer. Great combo. Any of the smaller or reduced-size old-timers would be really cool with the VT-21. A little Buccaneer or Miss America (a small plan was in MA a few years ago) or similar.

Thanks for the ideas. Dennis, what plug brand/style did you end up using in yours? I think the manual said to use a short, but I'm not sure what brand to buy.
Another kit I looked at was the HOB Spacewalker, but I'm not sure how it would match up.

I have a Ben Buckle Quaker Flash that I want to put a VT.21 into. The K&B .20 in it is too much. I have a VT.49 that's slated to go into my wife's Kadet Sr.

here is My 81" PLayboy. have a Royal 28 for power. its not slow getting up there--but it sure floats around pretty, over 100 fights on it so far, inckluding couple BOO BOO rebuilds. once you get upstairs, cut back on throttle and float and float. have 3 copies floating around the field. dick

Hey guys, thanks for the great pics. I really like the transparent coverings to show off the structure. I want something with ailerons for this project. I suppose these models could be easily adapted, though. I'll have to check the Sig Rascal models and maybe the small Kadet. I have a park right behind my house that would be nice to fly in when I don't have the time to drive to our flying field. With low noise from this engine, I figure none of the neighbors will complain.
