What Sig really stands for...
Sand It Good...
After 17 years in the hobby, I'm finally getting around to doing a Kougar. My first foam wing, too.
I guess I should have been prepared for all this sanding by the Wonder I did a few years ago. At least, this one has a plastic cowl. I was flashing back to the Super Kaos...
And I have another 70s-vintage Sig kit (SkyBolt) waiting to go on the board when this Kougar is done. I suppose I had better clean out the local True Value's stock of garnet paper...[&o]

What you say about sanding can be said for a lot of the older kits and designs. The Kougar and Skybolt have been around for many years.
A good block plain will help on the balsa blocks. Good luck and have fun !!!!

I use a Buck knife, then an open-faced rasp (looks like a cheese grater) then 80 grit emory cloth on a sanding block. You have to attack with a vengence to get the nice contours!

I spent $6.00 on a small Stanely plane on Ebay. I had to clean it up and sharpen the blade but ity works so much better then the Exacto razor plane. It cuts the balsa like butter and does not make all of the balsa dust.
When I built my old Super Kaos I had a garage covered in fine balsa dust. I think I sanded off more balsa then what I left for the structure.
The Cobra flys soooooooo nice that it makes all of the mess of balsa dust worth it.
Dru.
P.S. Use a dust mask because the balsa dust does wondes on your nose.

Well, the Hog-Bipe's a different story. I can't imagine a simpler, easier to build biplane kit. Hardly any sanding.
