Midwest ME-109
I built one when they first came out. Nice enough kit, heavy for its size though. Flies well with any good 40, mine had an OS 40SF & it had plently of power. Ground handling wasn't the best, on the other hand it got airborn in very few feet.
Flies OK, nothing spectacular- but does look good in the air. I would reduce the recommended dihedral by 40-50%- too much per plan.

Friend of mine built one:
Inverted os 46sf.
Made his own"G" model spinner out of cf.
"Supra" mechanical retracts.
Beautiful flyer. I flew it a few times, tracked straight, very predictable, stable in turns. I think it had a symetrical airfoil with fairly large radius LE. With a 46, it had plenty of power to spare, scale-like manuvers were really neat to watch.
Was a bit faster than my similarly powered Dynaflite 40 sized mustang.
Not too scale in outline though. Have photos I can post if you like.

Ha, there is a post about this plane in the warbirds secction as well. I just flew mine today. It's a bit heavy but with an o.s. .46 I can do some tall hammerheads. And it looks good banking low over the trees.... I would like to build it again and try to lighten it up a bit, and generally just do a better job.

rvd, here'a a couple of pics of my friends midwest 109. He scratch-made some fiberglass parts for the lower cowl , under wing radiators, and the round supercharger intake (port side, not visible). A little heavy on the airbrushing, but in the air, it looked just right.
The kit as you may know, is all built-up construction. I believe he epoxy painted the entier airframe. He did not use glass cloth, though if it were me, I think I would have.
Hope this helps.

Midwest 109
I have one of these, great airplane. My dad and I built it about 8 years ago, it was a pretty straight forward build. The fuse is a little heavy, but we only have a Saito .50 in it and it does just fine. Not very scale looking on the ground but it looks great in the air. We adapted it for the inverted motor installation, which really makes it look more scale, and this past winter, he added retracts. As far as flight performance, it's quite aerobatic. Nice Flatspins, rolling circles, and with some aileron and elevator it'll hold knife edge as well. As far as scale flying, the Saito does a nice job and sounds really great. This plane is cake to land as well, just crawls right in, no suprises.

This was my second plane and I had great fun with it. It was tough and I put it through a lot of bad landings. What finally killed it was the horiz. stab breaking in the bottom of a cuban 8 when I forgot to throttle down. So make sure your tail is strong!

Hi Jim Finn,
Just curious, as this is a .40 sized model, what will your power system be:
Motor
esc
battery
all-up-weight
Propeller
gear reduction
?
Cheers,
-Elliot

Hi Elliot I am using a Jeti Phaser 45/3 direct drive brushless with a Jeti opto-40 esc an 11.5X7.5 folding prop with 12 sub c cells 2100 MAH drawing 37 amps producing100 watts/pound for 3.6 minutes in this model weighing 88 oz. No landing gear no rudder. Bungee launch and land on grass. Covered with silk span and paint. Painting it now. Cannot wait to fly it. Have you ever gone to Baylands county park in Sunnyvale to fly? I used to live there and every Sunday AM there are a bunch of VERY knowledgeable guys flying electric only there.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the info. I ask because I have it in my head (doesn't mean it'll actually happen!) to do an e-conversion of a Dynaflite 40 sized Mustang. A friend has a NIB kit, and I'd proably just copy the plans and ribs and go from there with my mods. When compared to each other (Midwest 109 vs Dynaflite p-51) and both powered by OS46 engines, the Dynaflite has the advantage over the Midwest (lower wingloading, as well as suitable airfoil (semisymetrical vs symetrical). But the two are close enuf in class that any successful power system for the Midwest should certainly work for the Dynaflite.
Can't say I've ever flown at Baylands county park. Curently I fly out at BARCS, in Richmond about 10 minutes north of the Richmond/San Rafael bridge, but even now, my flying time is veeeeery scarce.
I had a successful 1st attempt at an e-coversion of my House of Balsa 109e which I had originally built as a slope soarer. Performance was weak with a speed 400 4.8V, should have used a 6v motor. Learned alot from it and did a foamie conversion of one of those styrofoam wall-mart ultra flyers.
Cheers,
-Elliot

RE: Midwest Messerschmitt .40
Just found a Midwest Messesrschmitt .40 here in Blumenau (south Brasil...), a new friend here bought it years ago and won`t build it so I made my offer...
The box is old, very old but everyting inside is OK and Ì`ll build it with retracts (of course) and some 4 stroke, probably a OS 52FS.
Nice kit, good instructions, good wood. Will produce a fine flyer, that`s for sure.
Blue Skies to all

RE: Midwest Messerschmitt .40
You can see my 109 in the background.
You can search here and "RC Groups" for my thread about this plane.
I had to scratch-build a new canopy, powered by a Fox .45BB .
I do like this plane besides it's narrow landing gear, high wing loading, small tail, and a very low side profile( hard to see).
As for flying qualities, the real 109 has already earned the old nick-name, " Evil, mean, wicked, and nasty", to which I'll add "Heavy as sin".....
I can post more pics if anyone wants.

Will do!
This is all coming from my previous threads....
As is visible, I covered her in silver monokote and then painted with "Perfect Paint", after so many years this has a great effect.
This plane is 19 years old...

Midwest Messerschmitt Fun-Scale 40
Hi from Mora, Minnesota.
Would anyone, by chance, still have the assembly booklet for the ME109? I can’t find mine and I’d sure like to finish this 20 year old project.
