Default House of Balsa 1/12 P51 Mustang

I just got one of these, and I'm planing to put in a .15 LA in it, with Hitec HS 81's, 555 RX and 6v 720mah AAA nimh batt. pack, silver Monocote for covering, has anybody done a similiar setup?, or 'am I over powered and over weight. I fly at high altitude, 5000 plus.

Why use a LA?? they're dogs. Get a Norvel or even an AP.15. Though the Norvel .25 would probably be a standout performer.

We have 2 at our field both are electric. You should go that route instead of goobering it up with fuel. They both fly fantastic.

The .15 LA is a dog? Hmm, that's contrary to all the experiences I've seen from people here. Do you actually have one, or are you doing like some other people and disparaging the LA line because it's not as expensive as your boutique engines?

I've never built this specific kit, but most of my planes have been in the .10-.30 range. Keeping it light is very important. Here are some ideas. First, do you really need 6v for the flight pack? The speed and torque difference between 4.8v and 6v is not huge. Using a 4.8v pack will save about 1/2 ounce, a significant saving in this size plane. You might also consider using even smaller servo on the throttle, and perhaps rudder (if you don't make the tail wheel steerable). For example, using an HS-55 on the throttle would save .29 oz. Using HS-55s on both throttle and rudder would save .72 oz. I was looking at the .15 LA a couple months ago. From what I read here and in other places it's a great engine. Reasonably priced, reliable, and lighter than many others in this class. Watch the weight on all the other components, such as wheels. When you have a choice, go light.

As you are building, look for opportunities to keep things light. Go easy on the glue, use CA as much as possible. In cases where epoxy is traditionally called for, such as on the firewall, use it sparingly.

All I know about those set ups is that they're using LiPo packs and Himax motors. Those 2 planes really rip and fly fantastic. What can you expect from a plane that was designed by Nick Zirolli

The electric conversion sounds good to me, I'll be using li-po's for sure.

I will also agree that while the 40 and 46 LA's leave somewhat to be desired. What I have heard and read about the smaller LA's is completely opposite. I have read some articles that say the 25 is actually quite strong.

Any how at 5000+ feet I would definately go for a 25. I feel the 15 may not be able to swing enough prop for good performance. I would do some weight comparing. I hear that the Norvel 25 and the K&B 28 are very light for their size. Try to get a strong 25 at the lightest weight possible. I have seen this plane fly and fly well. But weight is paramount. You need to save as much as possible. Good luck with it.

Joe, you won't be disappointed. Bothe of the flyers glassed the belly scoop for added strength.
