RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
Yea, a 10 year build! Finally finished and flown. Hint to everyone. It flyes great with an OS 61SF. Not underpowered or overpowered. Also, it balanced without any weight.

Any idea what the all up weight of your Cessna is?
With a .91 FS I had to still add quite a bit of nose weight.
Nice build,

RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
Total weight using my calibrated bathroom scale. 10.5 lbs. I'm not really sure why it balanced without weight. I glassed the interior of the cowl, used a 1500mA battery located upfront as far as possible and the aluminum spinner has a farley heavy prop nut on it. I also used the in cowl exhaust as recommended.

RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
I am in the proccess of building one and was wondering if anyone out there has put a FS-91 4 stroke in one. the drawings show placement of every possible engine except the FS-91. I bought a fiberglass specialties cowl for this plane and it looks really tight to fi completely inside the cowl. I had a thought of inverted would give more clearance.
Any suggestions??

Mine has the OS 91 Surpass engine in it, with the Slimline Pitts-style muffler.
Had to grind some corners off of the muffler a bit...and grind a bit of the mount to accept the muffler.
It fits in just barely. Mounted sideways, the head protrudes. Using the stock cowling.
Mounting inverted would prevent having to hack a hole in the side for the head, but not sure what muffler choices will work.

Don't do it! I built one and enjoyed the experience, but I would not recommend it for a beginner. Covering it with MonoKote took five days, because of all the compound curves.
It's an excellent kit, good parts fit, good plans, etc., but for a first-ever kit it would be a 10 for difficulty. In many areas of life, it is best to work your way up, and this is one of them.

According to [link=http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p4uWVnNZIIhS9co6drthGJg]this chart,[/link] the FS-91 is to tall to fit in the cowl horizontal w/o cutting, but it is one of the lighter 4-stroke choices for this plane.
My opinion is that any .91 or larger engine (.60 for 2-strokes) will provide enough power for this plane, just pick the engine you like the best!

My Magnum 91 fit inverted with just a postage stamp sized hole for vavle cover clearance. Stock muffler, had to bend the elbow slightly to get the exhaust pointed toward the cowl flap. Added a silicone Dubro extension that protrudes out of the cowl flap.

I have an OS .91 Surpass in mine. Mounted inverted with a stans fibertech cowl and wheel pants. I put the fuel tank on the floor and added the battery to the tank shelf. I used a slimline 8oz tank so it would fit between the firewall and the fuse keel without mounting it sideways. That sideways thing makes me nervous. Especially near the end of the flight. A left turn...and your outta fuel!
I painted mine to look like one I took pictures of at my local airport.

RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
The 182 is not a good first plane to build, I'm not saying its a hard kit to build, but its a very long kit for someone's first build. In my opinion build a couple shorter kits before you tackle a long building kit. One of the best kits to built is a Sig Something Extra, Its easy and fast to build, and easy to fly. Good luck to whatever you decide, the 182 is a nice plane just finishing one myself.

RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
I posted this on another thread with no reply. I plan on modifying a Top Flite 182 into a straight tail, such as in the photo. Has anyone out there tried it? I can make my own drawings for the rudder, fin, and fuselage top, but was hoping someone else has done it already.
Thanks,
Steve

A couple of months in on my 182. I have done some modifications according to
everything I have read about this kit.
I find that so far this project has gone toghether well. It is just challenging enough.

This is my second kit my son sat on the first one just before it was completed. Cense I started my second kit I read moor about the plane and what others did to modify it. The modifications some look hard but are easier than I thought.

RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
Hi Steve, I just started building the TF Cessna 182 & found this thread. Did you ever get your 182 modified to a straight tail? I used to own a 1958 Cessna 182A with the very same paint job as your picture. I just sold the plane last year after my partner lost his medical and could no longer fly. I still have pictures of my 182 and I am planing on painting it the same colors.

RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
Gary,
My apologies, but I haven't checked this thread in a long time. I'd love to see some photos of your plane, as I did find some of one located in California. For some reason, I just love that teal paint job with the straight tail.
My model has the wing and the bottom of the fuselage completed. I have not started the modifications to the tail or upper fuselage. However, I did take a lot of photos of a couple of 1958 straight tails here locally. Now, I just need to borrow a projector to complete the drawings.
This winter, I got sidetracked with scratch building a Hots, just to see if I could. the Cessna is currently on the list behind the completion of a Hog Bipe modified into a Stearman, and a scratch built Pietenpol project. In other words, I don't know when I'll get started on the 182.
Are you planning on making yours a straight tail? I thought it would be cool to have the first one, but at the rate I get planes done, there will probably be a whole fleet out there.

RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
Hi Steve, I know how that goes with getting busy with other projects. I had the TF 182 kit given to me from a friend last fall. Her husband had purchased the kit in 1996 and never took it out of the box. He passed away two years ago and last fall she asked if I would like to have the plane. I didn't pass it up !!! I used to build lots of planes years ago, but now I am getting back into the hobbie. On my TF 182 I am about the same stage as you. I have the tail section done, the wing mostly done & the bottom half of the fuselage completed. If I build the straight tail version, I think I will build the tail section from scratch. It looks like the hinge points would be easier to do on the straight tail. I am going to paint it the teal, black, white colors for sure. Everytime I flew the full scale plane into an airport I got lots of compliments & also people wanteing to buy it. I also flew it to the Oskosh Air Show several times. If you would like to send me your email address, I will e-mail you some detailed pictures and a high res image of 4716D. My e-mail address is [email protected].
I am also new to RCunivers & I did upload the image file of my 1958 Cessna 182. I just sold it 1 1/2 yrs ago. I still have a Piper Warrior tho.

RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
Just aquired one of these and have installed a 26cc gas engine, had to cut away a fare bit of cowl for the head and exhaust and carb venturi. Hoping to use it as a glider tug hence the gas engine. This was already built when I got it but I intend to strengthen key parts as I will be tempted to throw it around abit. Balances perfect with the 3300mah flight pack on the main u/c. Test flight will be this week hopefully.

RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
Hi Andre, I'll see if I can get some pics on tomorrow evening as I am at work now. My motor is a radial mount so I mounted one engine mount on top of another with the beams bolted together. You'll see better on the pics tomorrow. This is going to be way over-powered, wot the hell, it'l be fun[>:] and at half throttle it will do a good 45mins on a tank.

Hi Simon!
Thank you for the pictures!! I will bolt the engine on firewall, with aluminum spacers that come with engine. I will make a aluminum prop extension, so I do not need to cut the cowl. Here are some pictures...
Cheers,
Andre.

Hi Andre, with a pitts style muffler you wont need to cut anything. My carb coming out of the side and the big exhaust ment I had to do quite a bit of butchery to my cowl.

RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
WOO HOOOO, she flies. Takes off on 1/2 throttle, tootles around on 1/4 throttle and climbs on about 1/3 throttle. Tried the flaps out at about 100' and about 15` had it ballooning like mad so I did my 7 landings without flaps. I'll dial some flap/elevator mix in for the next outing. With these throttle settings I used about 3/4 of a tank of gas over 35 mins of flying and about 10 mins of ground testing and tuning. I think this is going to be a good glider tug which is what I want her for.
