Need help Identifying this airplane Kit
I picked up this at an estate auction at a fun fly we had this weekend, I need help identifying it.
Its length is 45 inches from front of cowl to tail.
Its wing span is 71" not counting balsa blocks for the tips, probably will be 73 to 74 inchs.
The fuselage is all fiberglass, including the canopy, it has metal landing gear mounted to the fuselage forward if the wing.
Also it has all fiberglass cowl and wheel pants.
The wing leading edge is straight and the trailing edge is tapered.
The wings are foam core sheeted balsa, they are cut to except two aileron servos.
I think that is all I can see about it for info.
Here are some pictures.

Looks like it could be either a Laser or the Stephens Akro that the Laser is based on. That's my guess. I couldn't begin to offer an idea as to what kit it is though.

The wing is much to thick for a Reno air racer. It isn't a Stephens Acro because the Acro had a bubble canopy. The shape of the cowl is wrong for a Laser. I believe it is a Cap 231.

Could it be a TR-260? There was a .60 size kit of this offered in the 80's, not sure if it was made by Mallory or not (I know they made a Laser kit of this size).

RE: Need help Identifying this airplane Kit
Hey Guys,
I was thinking it looked alot like a CAP but the cowling is what threw me, with the wide openeings in the front.
Also what strikes me as weird is the wingspan being 71 inchs and the fus only being 45, if you compare other planes with a comparable wing span, the fuselage should be about 55 to 60 inchs.
With knowing the wingspan at 71 and the length at 45, what engine range do you think, Im thinking about a 90 2 stroke or a 120 four stroke?
Dont know, it will be awhile before I can do anything with it, too much work, too little time....
Thanks for the inputs, if you come up with anything else, let me know.

RE: Need help Identifying this airplane Kit
I'd put money on it that it's a TR-260, might be a J & K Products model. With the long laser 200 like wings and the profile of that fuse, it's almost a dead give away (a lot of folks have never seen one). I have plans for a .60 size one and it looks just like yours as far as the shapes and dimensions are concerned. This aircraft was competing with laser 200's and Cap 21's in the 80's. Lanier R/C sells an ARF of the TR-260, but it does not look much like one if you ask me, it's gotta be fun scale or something. I can snap a pic of the plans if you need "proof" of the design, there's a good 3-view in the corner that shows how long the wings are compared to the fuselage length.

RE: TR-260
Thanks,
Did you say the deminsions match yours?
If so what power does it recomend, also I have no plans or manual (obviosly) so if you dont mind, could you give me all the important info, like CG, control throws and any thing else you can think of?
One other thing, the fuselage has no wood in it for support, not even in the firewall. I know I will have to build some of that up inside any suggestions will be great, I will take some more pictures expecially of the inside.
Thanks everyone

RE: TR-260
Mine has a slightly shorter wing, 66" WS (yours may have a little more span added for a lighter wing loading), but has the same length fuselage as yours, I believe it is close enough in size that the info would be useful. I'll pull the plans out again and get the particulates off of them. I had the Mallory Laser about 11 years ago, it was made just like your kit, it came with a sheet of 1/4" ply and some template sheets for the fuselage formers and firewall, it was sort of a short kit with a fiberglass fuse and foam cores. Did your kit come in any sort of box?

RE: TR-260
You are the man Bash, check out the pictures....
I never noticed the writing on the end of the box before, even if I had, I would have never known what a TR-260 was.
This is a picture of the return address label on the box, have you ever heard of them?
Any info would be great.
Thanks again..

RE: TR-260
I forgot all about the Quadrotech kits, they had a Cap 231 that I wanted. They were around for a few years in the 90's, you should still be able to get info for this kit somewhere. I never heard anything bad from them.

RE: TR-260
I emailed the company, on there web site, they didnt show anything about this kit, hopefully someone at the company still has access to the info on this airplane, it looks really kool.
The only thing not inthe box was the flight controls, so I have no idea how big to make the ailerons, rudder or elevators....
Any suggestions?

RE: TR-260
Sounds good,
Anything will help, does yours have plywood formers in the inside? If so was there any drawings for them?
ANy measurements you can take would be great, pictures of plans of drawings would be even better...
Thanks Again,
Weskel

RE: TR-260
Mine is completely built up, fuse is truss built, only has a couple of ply bulkheads. I doubt they would be any help. Your gonna need 3 bulkheads, 1-complete 1/4" former for the firewall; 2-complete 1/4" former where the notch in the wing fits into the fuselage; 3-complete 1/4" former where the trailing edge of the wing goes into the fuselage (turtledeck headrest section). You will also need a raised floor that should join between the two bulkheads that the wing will fit between, this is where you will install servo's and such. There's a trick you can do with a piece of wire to figure out your templates, bend it to fit the inside contour of the area the bulkhead will be installed, mark of a half width point in the fuselage and mark it on the wire also once it is in place, remove the wire from the fuselage, be carefull not to distort the wire once it's in shape, carefully trace the half on a piece of posterboard or some thin cardboard material, cut out the complete "half", then trace the half onto the cardboard again, flip it over the center and trace the reverse half with center lines overlapping as one, presto! you have a fairly accurate template that may need only minor fitting. This type wing usually uses 2 bolts in the front and 2 in the back of the wing to secure it to the fuselage, if it has enough swing room at the trailing edge you could probably use the typical leading edge dowel setup. I can help you with the flying surfaces, I'm gonna see if I can scan what you will need and email it to you from work tomorrow. That way you will have full size plans of the flying surfaces to build from.

Oh yeah, you can glue some 1/4" balsa to the front of the cowl around the inlet, this will allow you to sand a nice rounded opening instead of having that flat front look.
