No I didn't use a suspension system I just built it stock, and I should have probably, as our runway is very bumpy as its a Field on a farm we just started to rent about 6 years ago and being seasonal up north here its taking a bit of time to get it all smoothed out, Its a nice field with thousands of farm acres all around us but corn and hay use to grow where we now mow. lol the grass is getting better every year, so we still have lots of work to get it nice and flat though. its Okay now but will eventually be so much better.

anyway the DR1 has no problem on it at all its a little rough on it depending on where it lands on the runway, but its been holding strong for 2 years now. I'm itchin to get out there but we can't access the field until the 2 feet plus of snow melts now. so we call this Building season.

Back to work on the DR1. I installed a switch hatch in the Cockpit and covered the floor before sheeting.

Making some headway. Setting wing incidence or attempting it anyway.

Enjoyed the video, makes me wish we had a little grass here in Arizona. If I want to fly off grass I'll have to trespass on a golf course.

I just had the BUSA DR.1 kit given to me. It has the bottom wing started, the stub wing started, and the horizontal stab and elevators finished. I'm looking forward to getting going on the rest of it soon.

I'm a SLOW builder! I don't plan on doing any of this very fast.

Looks like a great thread.

Thanks

This is for anyone out there starting a new Balsa USA DR1. I am building my second DR1 and decided this time to go through the entire Box labeling Balsa stock. I am amazed at how much time and frustration this is saving. Maybe you guy's already do this or have advised it in the thread so if I am repeating I apologize. On my first build as I worked through the box It became increasingly more frustrating to find the correct piece. So this time I started by measuring and sorting. It took three hours to complete the sort but is making this build much more enjoyable.
I have to agree this does slow the build. It is too bad BUSA could not organize and mark more of the material in some way. Both my DR1 and DVII took longer because of this. I am sure I just grabbed wood out of my own stock, just to save time.

Just a little more scale. I would not mind having functional wing tip skids/Ax handles. And a more scale paint scheme, although I have never been much of a fan of the all green-streaked DR1's.
I put hard mounts at the wing tips for 1/4" screw eyelets. I then carve some hickory dowels round to fit. Those hickory dowels are tough and get a lot of use!

Josef Jacobs had a really cool black scheme.

I am in the process of finishing up a BalsaUSA Dr-1 that was half started by someone else. Had to fix a lot of things, and some things just, well, cant do much about. So...its a definite sport scale stand 10 feet away type.
I was able to get Snoopy to defect to the German side to pilot her LOL!

Very cool Summerwind Can't wait to see it and glad its all working out for you.

Kahlog LOL I was dying to put a snoopy in mine, I also received mine with 2 wings done and 1 wing almost finished so I had to go back and correct a few things also but the Guy I got it from had an idea of what he wanted it to be when he started it so I finished it in the colors he wanted to see it done in, He's a great guy they just moved into a small apartment And he didn't have the room to finish it, but he was really happy he got to see it how he wanted it done. And it flys awesome !! he's a little older so he doesn't fly too much anymore only when he's feeling good, and once he took the sticks on this DR-1 he felt great LOL Until he started getting dizzy and handed me back the box LOL

In my case....the plane's original builder...well..what can i say....probably had the building skills of an 8 year old. It was really fracked up. I bought it off ebay and the photods provided looked OK...but...once i aw it in person...well..two friends of mine that have built BalsaUSA planes beforer said I should just thrown it away and start over.

Well....the wife kinda wanted me to see if i could fix it enough to make it flyable so thats what I did. Had to strip the covering off....fix/bondo/glue a ton of stuff and realign most of the wing structures and some parts are still warped...but...it should fly hopefully.
In any event...it will be good training for flying a 1/4 scale WWI plane.
Next time, I wont buy something off ebay like that and if i actually build from a box of wood...id like to do an Albatross

Kahlog I don't think your going to have a problem with this bird at all, Even without looking at all the things wrong you described you had to go back through and fix, you have experience in the warbird department I know from the 109 thread, and you know what your talking about, so I'm sure your going to do a great job on this beauty also. Flying warbirds is a blast and especially the 109, I know what a handful that 109 can be, especially seeing mine was under powered warbirds are a little different breed then the normal type RC trainer and sport planes, but this DR-1 flys like a trainer and no matter what is wrong or off in the build I feel this plane can just about fly with any handicap at all.

The Albatross is also on my list of future builds, great stuff right there for sure.
Good luck and keep us posted

in the first shot you can see no screw holes because the screws fasten to the center wing from underneath.
