Goldberg Extra 300

Please make sure to make templates of important parts such as wing ribs and fuse side plates so that in future we can call you for assistance if we ever need help in making replacement parts.

I know this is an old thread, but my quest to get my hands on another one resulted in some good info. Goldberg still has many parts available. Fuse sides, bulkheads, ribs, cockpit insert etc. The cowl and canopy are available from fiberglass specialities. It's all quite expensive and will require some scratch building, but it's out there. I just received around $120 worth of parts. Bet I will make templates this time!

*S* it might be an old thread but there are still allot of these planes flying out there and any news on parts is good news to anyone that has one of these planes or wants to scratch a new one. Thank You for sharing!

I also picked up a CG Extra 300 untouched kit off craig's list in Muncie, IN last year for $100 with some extras (the fiberglass cowl and aluminum landing gear). Hope to build someday.

We need to have this planes balsa-parts available on a website that can be downloaded or copied to keep the scratch-building of all the balsa parts easily accessible to those who want to build with their standard of balsa… anyone want to copy and place this online? Too good a flyer to see so few on the flight line.

Yes, good idea. I also follow the Pica Waco thread, (I have one of those too), and "Stickbuilder" made "templates" of the this kit and loaded on a disk for anyone who wanted one. This may have been an older thread.

All you Goldberg Extra fans out there! I know of a small kit manufacturer that may be willing to produce a clone of this Extra. How many would be interested? It would be more expensive but it would have a fiberglass cowl and wheel pants and the one piece aluminum gear. I don't know for sure but probably in the $250 range.

Sounds nice but he may have legal issues as Goldberg is now owned by Great Planes they also own the copyright to all Goldberg kits.
And don't think for a minute they would be OK with any other company producing a kit for any of those covered by a patent. Ask AK Models about that one, they had a problem with Sig years ago.
Otherwise, the price sounds right. A nice laser cut kit would be better then an original die-crunched one.
Cowl could be an optional extra for cost savings as well.

I imagine there would be some subtle changes but there are a lot of other clones out there these days.
DLE engines and HK helicopters come to mind right off.
Also bare in mind this is a scale subject so an Extra is an Extra regardless of the model manufacturer.
Is this was going to be a reproduction of some sport model, for example a Top Flite Contender, there could be additional copy right issues.

Steve, are you talking a complete kit or a short kit? I know you said around $250.00 but if it's a complete kit with a good glass cowl and canopy plus LG then that's a pretty fair deal considering the cost of wood and the after market cowl and canopy. I always replaced the LG and cowl anyway, I bought them from FGS and the cowl wasn't cheap. Last one I built I needed a canopy too so it really added to the cost.

Goldberg Extra 300 builder, Question. I have a 300 framed up and looking at the wire landing gear and the funkey wheel pants supplied in the kit. I have read that the model tends to nose over with the stock gear and its placement. Any suggestions, like bend the wire gear forward about an inch and has anybody bothered to assemble the wheel pants supplied in the kit. I have looked and found carbon fiber landing gear that is about the same width but taller, (prop clearance on grass strips) and some replacement carbon fiber wheel pants. Suggestions on "been there done that" would be appreciated. Thanx

The stock wire l/gear on mine did not last very long flying from our grass field and the model did have a tendency to nose over during take off runs, though holding some back pressure on the elev. stick solved this. A neat mod to cure this annoying habit is either rotating the main wheels on the stock wire gear forward 1", or fitting an aftermaket alum or CF gear with a 3/8' thick wooden wedge between the gear and the fuse to rotate the wheels forward. I gave up on the rather wimpy stock plastic cowl and wheel pants and got a nice set from Fiberglass Specialities, plus the additional height the gear gave came in quite handy when I fitted a G23 with a 17" dia prop.

62 pages is a bunch to read through but I used to get the aluminum gear and glass pants and cowls from fiberglass specialties but back farther in this thread someone said the LG they got from FGS was too wide?? With all the ARFs on the market it is easy to just find an ARF of the same size and get the gear and pants from them.

Gray Beard is correct, there was an issue with FGS LG width, perhaps corrected by now. I have purchased my LG's from TnT Landing Gear, they offer a 1/8" and a 3/16", the 3/16" version is worth the extra cost. http://www.tntlandinggear.com/
