Goldberg Extra 300

I had originally purchased one prebuilt / used from a gentlemen in the San Fran Bay area back in 1998-99. It was a Red White and Blue one that was not the Proteus white scheme on the box. I powered it with a Magnum 120 4s and it was a dream to fly. Made me look like a much better pilot back in the day. That said, I am not sure what I will put in the cowl this time for power but will definitely go with the aftermarket glass cowl and aluminum gear. I will install dual aileron servos and reinforce the fuse areas in front of the wings with additional plywood. Thinking about a gasser and maybe glassing the plane / painting. Will figure that out later.

Bill,
Purchased a DLE 20 RA for my Top Flite P47 GE Kit and am thinking about that and fitting it to the fire wall as my engine option. If I go this route, I will mount the engine inverted and only cut out the bottom of the cowl where required. This should aid with engine cooling but until I see what I am dealing with as compared to the plans, who knows. As for mods, here is what I plan to do so far:
1) Dual Aileron servos; separate harnesses no Y harness
2) Dual Elevator servos; separate harnesses no Y harness
3) Pull / Pull Rudder
4) Reinforce fuse forward of wing saddle
5) Aluminum Gear
6) Glass Cowl
7) 6 Volt RX/IGN with heavy duty switches
8) Glass / Paint (TBD) I will sheet the entire fuse and wing
That's it for now but need to read through this thread to see if I missed anything that I didn't remember from my first one.

All,
Building season is upon us in upstate NY as the weather is turning and the election over. I have decided to add to this thread and post my build of the Carl Goldberg Extra 300 and associated modifications to keep it alive. I will post pictures tonight and clear off the work bench in order to begin building.

I am just about to start a Goldberg Extra 300. I would appreciate any comments or ideas on improvements to make in the construction. What should I use for power? I was thinking about a YS 110 but if this is not available due to supply constraints; what would you suggest? I am going to use a TNT landing gear and Fiberglass Specialties Cowl and Canopy although I have not purchased them Yet. Looking for ideas!

Absolutely go with FS Cowl and wheel pants. Going to try TNT as well. Quote I received was $45 I think before shipping. Go with double aileron and elevator servos. Leaning towards DLE 20 myself or a Magnum 120 4s which I have. Time for pictures as I have been preparing my kit for d out during the past two hours.... here we go.......

Glad to hear of the new build, Thunderbolt. I bought a Goldberg kit with extras a few years ago. I am saving it for the future when I have more time to do a really good job on the build. This is an excellent thread. Will be watching the build. Good luck

Appreciate the encouragement and comradery. I will try and post daily with picture updates. I have started a new family tradition as I built a 4 Star 60 during Thanksgiving last year before the black Friday Shopasaurus attacked along with the wife. So this year it will be the Extra while watching / listening to the game. Covering during the Holidays can be therapeutic and relaxing.

oh man I hate the thought of cutting up plans, and cringe when I see someone do it to something like the Ziroli B-25, only because those plans cost $70!!! When I built my LT-40 though, I had an extra set made, and cut those up instead. Now if I could make copies of my Ziroli for what I paid for the LT-40 plans, I would do it, much easier to work on the parts when half the plans aren't hanging off the bench.

acdii,
Totally agree and have built on the folded over / hanging off the table plans as well as sacrificing / cutting the plans. I keep all of my plans' cutouts in document protectors along with the instructions, so if I desire to go back and rebuild an item, I can. As for the Goldberg Kit, precision is the key. The woods are usually thinner and more brittle than Great Planes, Top Flite, PICA or Sig kits as many of you all already know. Therefore instead of fighting the plans folded over or hanging off the table like a dangling chad and risking the integrity of a delicate kit (like Goldberg Sukhoi which brings back fond memories of broken wing ribs and sheet balsa breaking during construction), I opted to sacrifice the plans on the alter of freedom and commence another build. Oh, BTW, I just saw a CG Extra 300 on Ebay for $500 today so if anyone wants one they can buy one and do a build along with me over the holidays LOL. I am looking forward to building the horizontal stab and elevators tonight. Well that's the goal anyway. MTF

Got cranking tonight. Cut out / fabricated the horizontal stabilizer, framed it up then pinned it down and glued it together. Forgot how tedious cutting all the angles in the built up horizontal stab and elevators is. Got out my Zona razor saw (highly recommend this saw) and got to the task of measuring twice and cutting once to frame out the H Stab.
And then gluing and sheeting the stab. Hard part here is remembering to true up the running edges of the sheeting prior to gluing them to the frame while following the semi vague instructions. Top Flite GE kits have spoiled me.
Almost accomplished the goal for tonight but forgot how tight the cutting of the framing was and ran out of 3/16x5/16 sticks so elevator completion will wait until tomorrow. MTF

Got home a little late from work today as something always comes up or goes wrong at the end of the day. That said I did get the opportunity to do some more work on the tail feathers. End state for today was elevators glued, beveled, and hinged along with horizontal stab. In addition built the vertical stab / fin and rudder. Hinged all surfaces while still square then beveled IAW plans. Still have to final sand and round the trailing edges of the control surfaces but pretty excited as how well this Goldberg kit and wood components are going together. Wood in this kit is solid and of good quality unlike my previously mentioned experience with a Goldberg Sukhoi build. As for enlarging the rudder, I chose not to modify it as my first extra IMO flew every maneuver I wanted to do with ample authority with a 120 4s and stock rudder. The DLE 20RA arrived today for my P47 and I will assess tomorrow and see how it will fit in the Extra as more power was my only complaint because I did not have unlimited vertical. Today's build pics follow.....
Thanks to everyone watching and I will do my best to keep my build moving along.

Local copy shop (not a chain store!) charges about $7 for any plan that fits into his machine.
The copy looks just as good as the original and the one i had done was 100% perfect.

Looks GREAT Rye!!
i noticed the servo by the tail. Was that required in order to get it to balance with the DLE?
Anyone try to fit a G23 in one? I'm thinking its probably on the heavy side...

I does my heart good to see that we have some builders left, I too will be watching the progress.
All I can say is this, the plane flies like a dream and lands even better. I have always called mine the smaller plane that thinks its a 40 % due to the way it handles and flies.
