Ah. I see the difficulty now. I often traced all the parts onto the plans. But just as often not. So no ideal if I have usable patterns or not.

I was wondering how this kit/plane compares to the Great Planes Extra 300S 60 kit. I know this plane is bigger but is one kit better then the other and how about the flying ability? I was thinking about getting the GP's kit but should I look for one of these?

So what changes if any should I make? I'll get a fiberglass cowl. It will have a gas engine not sure what one yet. I started reading through this thread.

I would suggest getting the fiberglass wheel pants along with your cowl. One important point (in my opinion) is to use 3/16 aluminum landing gear, it is available from TnT.

This is a very old thread but the plane is such a good one it will stay alive. Mine was built about 1986 and I'm using the YS 120 which was state of the art when it was installed. Through the thread you will see the then new Zinoah 20 cc used then the DLE. Lot of nice choices these days and gas is the way to go.

The Goldberg 300 kit is one of the very best flying built up fuse airframes in it class
I was at the field years ago when one of my good friend was flying one
The kit called for a 60 size engine but he had an ASP 1.08 two cycle in it
They do require more power than a 60 or 61

He was doing the nose up -rotating the plane on its access and we were just starting to see that manuver being developed at the fiield
We had the pleasure of watching Yuri haguchi on L I N Y who is responsible for designing some of the 3D manuvers used in competion today
Yuri is as good as it gets at flying RC in competion sometimes just inches off the runway

Thanks for the feedback. I will get aluminum landing gear for it. Are there any structural changes that should be made other than whats needed for the landing gear? I noticed some talk about the fuse area in front of the wing. I'm a sport flyer and don't fly 3D but it sounds like the plane can do most types of flying.

I always wanted an Extra 300 kit but kind of gave up till I attended the Red Bull Air race in Indianapolis last October. After that race I started looking and found this thread.

Sadly, mine was lost a few years back due to an aileron servo failure;-(
A 20cc gas engine is the ticket for the Goldberg Extra. My first choice would be the DLE 20RA, which is cheaper than a DLE20 when you factor in a Pitts muffler for the standard 20.
My Extra was built with dual elevator servos. It was very easy to lay out a mirror image arrangement with the servo pushrods.
The Goldberg Extra is not a 3D machine. It would take some major mods in the control surfaces to go there, also it isn't built quite as lightly as most modern Extra 300 ARF's, but the Goldberg Extra is one super nice flying airplane!

This old design was developed for IMAC, not 3-D. The reason for the added mod just in front is because it's the weakest point in the plane and installing an engine bigger then the original .60 two stroke adds stress in this area. Every time the plane is landed there is usually a jolt and it is felt by the plane in the weak area. Mine lasted for almost two decades though before the front of the plane fell off.
It's not really a big mod, it's just installing a better doubler.
Your call, look at that area as your building.

I should get me kit tomorrow. Just finished reading all 68 pages of this thread, lots of good info. The DLE20RA is tops on my list but I don't care for the sound of it. What about the 20GX? I will trace the die cut parts and might just cut a kit to build and keep this one intact.

By all means make a template of every part in the kit. Nice dark ones on butchers paper. If you can get them on disc it would be great to post them as a file right here so we can all have a good fresh copy!

Never heard of any one adding flaps to this one, it slows down very nicely without them but it will interesting and some added fun.

My CG Extra is more than two decades old and never been damaged possibly due in part to my using most all of the strengthening tips etc. suggested in this thread at one time or another, including the one for the fuse recently one mentioned by Grey Beard. Over the years it has had several engine changes starting with a .60, .75, .90. glow engines and finally now with a Ralph Cunningham lightened with CD ignition Zen G23. With an AUW of 9.5 lbs it's a real joy to fly with absolutely no bad habits and like most Goldberg designs, it lands like a trainer.

There is a saying "The devil finds work for idle hands" so at one time I played with the idea of building new wing with thicker balsa sheeting as the stock sheeting is quite thin and fitting flaps, but was talked out of the idea by my flying bud who reminded me of just how much it can be slowed for landing. That was the end of that thought but it would be interesting to see someone give it a try.

You could experiment with flaperons if your radio supports it and you have at least a 6 or 7 channel RX. I did that on a 4*120, With them deployed I can have it just hang in the sky.
