Default Engine for GP Giles 202 46 size kit

I am building the Great Planes Giles 202 46 size kit and need to decide on the right engine. I want max performance for 3D. I am thinking the OS91 Surpass, YS110, or perhaps the Saito100. The problem with this plane, according to RC Universe, is that it tends to be nose heavy so not sure about the YS since it is 728g as opposed to the OS91 Surpass w/pump which is 697g. Not sure about the Saito. Any suggestions?

I'm quite happy with the Magnum 91 in mine. Remember to reinforce the landing gear supports, F2, and the area behind the wing. recently I found the board the tank is mounted to is also weak. Try this thread:

I am building same plane. Planning to use a Saito 91 which other threads have indicated will be sufficient. You might want to search for those other threads.

Don't plan on much 3-D with this plane...........it's too small and unstable for hovering etc....

Thanks for the tips..........I was looking at the Saito 91, but they now have a new addition to their line, the 100 which is in the same case, but a little more power and may go for that.

I'll check that out.

I did not know that. I understood that this would do just about everything if set up properly.

Thanks

I have a Magnum .91 four stroke in mine. I'm not skilled enough to do 3-D stuff anyway but find this plane fun to fly through all the other manuevers. It won't hang on the prop long enough so I don't think it would be any good in 3-D stuff anyway. It is very light 6# 8 oz. Keep up your speed on landing as it seems to give very little warning approaching a stall. Be sure to set the landing gear an inch ahead of the plans to keep it from nosing over. I did not have a computer radio when I built this so I used a couple collars to tie the elevator push rods together as recommended. Bad news. I never could get the elevators adjusted to function good enough. My plane was badly damaged when hit by an out of control plane while setting in the flight line area. I rebuilt the tail using the time tested U-wire method to join the elevators and used a single push rod. Made the plane a real pleasure to fly. I also made a tray similar to the gas tanks' to hold the battery in the fuse behind the wings. By easily sliding the battery on the tray I can adjust the CG. Now one of my favorites to fly.

Lukeshort: I am not sure what you did, but I did something similar. I will post some photos, if I can figure out how to do it.

Leftnut: I think the Saito 100 is a nice fit for this plane.

I also think that the fuel tank is too far forward and maybe the cause of the nose overs on takeoff on a full tank. Ideally it should be at the designated CG, so that as the tank empties it would not change the CG. NOTE: If someone who has a Giles 202 .46 size would like to test this out and take off on a half tank, I would like to know the result. I may try putting a tank in sideways or something.

Okay, here are some photos of what I did. I am going to go for the Saito 100, but now I am wondering about the engine mount which is a GP adjustable.
Suggestions welcomed.

As to the landing gear, I made new pieces to move the gear 5/8" forward. Sort of a compromise. I made a new Landing Gear Plate and a Forward Fuselage Bottom to accomodate the 5/8".
Enjoy.
