Bought a Sig 1/4 scale Clipped Wing Cub
I found a 1/4 Scale Clipped wing Cub kit today too cheap to pass up. It should be delivered within the next week. I was going to order the Sig 1/5 scale but I managed to get this plane much cheaper!!
I want to do a different paint scheme other than the normal blue sun burst pattern. Does anyone have any good ideas for a paint scheme for this plane??? I am open to any suggestions!!

Tubig,
It is a Sig 1/4 scale Clipped Wing Cub. I will start as build thread as soon as the kit arrives. I do not know what engine I will use yet, I will get a 4-stroke or a gas engine.

I hope you like to build
I built a Sig 1/4 clipped wing cub 2 years ago. With as good as their other cubs are, I was really disappointed to see that the 1/4 scale was a builder's kit.
BTW, since you're a WWII nut, how about Olive Drab w/ Invasion stripes?

Minnflyer,
I am not crazy about the Olive Drab paint schemes. I would like to find some good pics of nice full size clipped wing cub other than Hazel Sigs. I like this scheme but I do not have enough views to copy it.

Put a 35 to 40cc gasser (MUCH cheaper on fuel) in it with a BIG battery and tank. Now go fly for an hour at a time! My buddy and I fly on the beach in Ocean City NJ with his 1/4 Scale Clipped Wing Cub and my Rearwin Speedster. What a blast! Stay up as long as you want.

RE: Bought a Sig 1/4 scale Clipped Wing Cub
I am looking at a Ryobi 31cc converted gasser, I can pick a new one up from the guy I bought the cub from for $145.00. It sounds like a good deal to me. I will be detailing the cub out with a full cockpit, rib stitching and scale gear from Robart. Does anyone know if the Ryobi will fit entirely within the cowl of the cub??? I want to make sure I get an engine that will fit inside the cowl.

I don't think you'll find any conversion gassers that will fit entirely within the cowl on a Cub--the cowl is just too narrow and the carb usually sticks out too much. My US-41 doesn't come close to fitting, it's a rear exhaust, but the carb is hangin' out in the breeze. They'r pretty pricey, but the RCS gas engines are rear exhaust and rotary valve, the carb sits behind the crankcase. The whole engine is only about 4 inches wide, lots of room.

Here is a pic of the engine, it is a rear carb rear exhaust engine. I think it just might fit inside the cowl, it may require moving the firewall back a little.

Do a Google search on clipped wing Cubs. There are zillions out there in every color. You will also find some with a full cowl that has been added during modifications. Like RC fliers, full scale clipped wing Cub owners seem to do all sorts of "kit bashing" to their planes. I also saw one with a 300 hp engine!!
The Sig 1/4 scale clipped winger will fly with a .91 or larger. I had one of the old OPS Maxi 30cc glow engines in mine. A 1.20 4-stroke would be perfect.
Bear in mind when you build it, the construction is designed for an inverted engine. There is cross planking or plywood under the curved top of the nose so the tank can not be raised after construction for a side mount. If you plan to side mount and use a dummy engine on the other side, modify this area so you can get the tank up level with the carb.

ORIGINAL: Homepylon
Here's mine. I was going to do the Henderson paint scheme, but came across this one in an old issue of Flying magazine.
Power is an OS FT-160 twin.

Brad,
Thanks for the pics, That is one fine looking cub!!!! I may do that scheme minus the "N" number. I plan on putting a functional door in mine and a finished cockpit as well. I might also look at bolting the wing from the inside(not sure if there is enoght room??). I am looking at powering mine with a Ryobi 31cc conversion. I will definitly get a cowl and pants from Stan's.
Thanks Again!!!!

Brad,
From your pics it looks like the Struts interfere with the door lowering all the way?? If so would you reccomend making the door slightly smaller to clear the struts??

I'm not sure what Brad used, but if he built it according to the plans, the door uses a pinned-type hinge, cut in two. The way the door hinges, the bottom edges hit each other and limits how far the door swings down. It is the same way on the 1/5 scale. Here is what the latch looks like, I added a small tab that locks the upper window in place so that it doesn't flap in the slipstream

RE: Bought a Sig 1/4 scale Clipped Wing Cub
Thanks all for the kind words.
Anyone building a Cub should visit http://www.geocities.com/cubmanky/
You'll find detailed tips and drawings for the operating door, latch, full cockpit, and a lot more.
I used the door outline on the plans and it does hit the wing strut when open, but making the door smaller means re-sizing the window as well and I'm not sure how that would look.
There is a surprising amount of work involved reinforcing the fuselage if you're going to have a full cockpit and door. Not difficult, but time consuming. The web site listed has all the details.

Brad,
You can shorten the door by raising the hinge line(shorten from the bottom), this will change the size of the door a little I am just not sure how much you would have to do that to miss the Strut??? Can you look at your cub and see how much shorter your door would have to be to miss the strut? I wonder how they handle this on the full scale??
I already have Cubmanky's site in my favorites he has alot of good info on his site. I have his Continnental plans printed out and ready to start building.

I will measure everything out good and see what I can come up with, I am attaching a pic of the door area of a full scale clipped wing. I will try do replicate the full scale hinges and the way they are ofset should resolve any binding issues.
I have started building the dummy engine cylinders as described on Cubmanky's website while I am waiting on my kit to arrive. I will post some pics when I start my build thread, so far they are looking very good
