Hey, what do ya know! A little more progress!

I started mounting the struts last night and finished up the strut mounts in the wing. I wanted to go for a more scale look and this is what I finally came up with. But actually, credit has to go to Robert for giving me the idea and Anthony for shots of his BUSA 33% Cub. I used 1/8" ply laminated together since I didn't have any 1/4", a little extra work but I think it came out okay. And it appears to be plenty strong.

Thanks guys!  No comments on the grass?  Robert had to make one, thanks for noticing Robert.  But my excuse... can't mow with one arm!  I'm stickin' to that one!

Now on to the struts themselves.  Got some ideas already.  I'll post some photos when I'm done.

Take care,
David

Could you guy's tell me, how important it is for the left and right wing to have the same incedence?
In other words what would happen if the fuse is level and one wing is0degs and the other is 3degs?

Thank you SDP, this plane was a lot of fun to build. I'm happy with how it has turned out. Can't wait to see it fly!

I wonder how much the balance would change if I made another set of wings. I could have both, a full span and a clipped while using the same fuselage.

SDP,
I considered the same thing.  I debated on which way to go, clipped or un-clipped.  I settled on full span but would maybe like the option of having a second clipped wing to use.  Does anyone have any idea how it would affect the plane?

A little more progress on the struts. I finished up the wing end, now on to the fuse end. Here's a few photos of the aluminum plugs that will go in the fuse end of the front struts (before shaping of course). They are drilled and tapped for a 4-40 all-thread and bored out to accept the shaft of the DUB302 rod end. The all-thread will be perminent and the rod end will allow adjustment but will be blue Loctited when the adjustments are complete.

It's coming out pretty nice if I do say so myself. A lot of work though. It'll be worth it!

Take care,
David

Nice Work. What did you use to shape the plugs?

Well VJ, I used a plethora of tools, well maybe just a few.  After the first couple I cut pieces a little longer then I used a vertical belt sander.  When I got close (by eye balling it) I started using a Whiz-Cut file.  Then once I got even closer (a little eye ball and a little fitting in the end) I used a regular fine flat file.  In between some of those steps I used the Dremel.  That's about it.  It's a lot of work (did I mention that?) but it's almost done!

Well today Iworked onthe elevator and rudder controls. Getting the pull-pull sysyem properly set-up was a bit tricky but mission accomplished. I even got the engine in place. It's so gratifying to finally see everything come to fruition. OOPS just spotted the tail wheel backwards!

Looks like the only hurdle left for you is the windshield, that is a little challenging.

Quick question Vincent....

Did you secure the guide tubes at the front of the elevator pushrods? If not you may want to do that to eliminate the possibility the wire will bend instead of pushing / pulling.

You can see them in this photo of mine.

Thanks SDP for reminding me. I actuallymade and slipped them over the elevator guide tubes before I soldered up the pushrodsbut forgot to glue them in place, they just worked thier way out of view. Good call...

Boy, this thread has been dead today!
Hey, finished my main struts, on to the jury struts. Here's a couple more photos of how the fuse end came out. Need to stop by my LHS and pick up some tubing for the jury struts. Then I can finish up some detail work and then on to the covering! Wow, I might finish this thing after all!

Looks real nice there David.

Won't have my camera back till next week so I can't post any pictures till then. I took the Cub out tothe flying field for display tonight, wanted to get some feedback good, bad or indifferent. Got some great suggestions for improvements and overall I think it was well received. Should be in the air very soon.......

Excellent VJ.  Did you come back with any hints or pointers for the rest of us (mainly meaning me)?

I'm hoping to have my jury struts done by tomorrow night.  When they are complete, I'll be sure to post photos!

Take care,
David
