It is really just a matter of preference. They are both great products and they have their advantages and disadvantages.
The Solratex is a easier product to apply. The fabric will take more time and effort and save a few $$ but not that much.
You will eventually make up your mind

David, you'll do what feels right for you, Anthony is right they are both great products.
Tonights progress: Thought I would show you how I worked my way around the horizontal stabilizer. I first laid out the material (without removing the backing) flat on the fuse side with the fabric tight up to the stab. Then I took a steel ruler and laid the ruler against the stab as shown and drew a light pencil line. I did that for the opposite side as well. I then took the fabric to my cutting board and trimmd it as shown. Very easy, then I peeled the backing and ironed it down. Results are in the last photo. As far a steel rulers goes it is very helpful to have a few different type of rulers, some rigid and some very flexible.
Think I decided on my colors- Red and White! Will need to order paint soon....

Vincent,
Looking good, thanks for the pictures. I ordered a third scale Cub from AMR Monday, just like what Anthony built. I got to do a few lazy circles with one at our field today. It is a big plane, but easy to fly.

Thanks Chuck and Anthony. Hope you document that build Chuck!Thats a great plane.I'm sure Anthony will be able to give you some heads-up on that build.....
Anthony what do you suggest to blend the seams at the top of the fuse (spine on the turtle deck and sides). I don't think I saw you use any pinking tape in that area. I did not want to chance using a razor and straight edge at that location because if I nicked the underlaying piece then well......

Cub Flyer Fresno,
David if you go with the silver Solartex and plan on painting with Butyrate you will not be happy with the outcome unless you prime the silver first(the cub yellow would appear translucent over the silver without the primer). If you paint it with Latex you won't need the primer but you will need to scuff the silver with 0000 steel wool for better bonding and it may take several color coats to get the proper paint tone/hue.
If you go with the natural solartex and are painting with Butyrate dope your first color coat should be silver or gray (very light coat) and cured for several days to a week then topped with several light coats of cub yellow. If painting over the natural solartex with Latex no primer is needed but it will take several light coats to get the correct tone/hue.
The biggest differnce in either method will be weight . The silver Solartex, painted either way, will be heavier .
I have covered a full wing J3 with one 10 meter roll ( I have done more than a few cub kits) - this is your first big covering job you will need at least 12.5 to 15 meters and plan your fabric layout carefully.

VJ,
On my 1/4 I did not use tapes on the fuse but on my 1/3 I did. The full size Cub has reinforcement tapes wherever the fabric contacts the structure of the fuse. This will conceal all of your seams. Contact Gary at Pink-It and ask him if his 1/4 kit contains enough for the fuse as well(I don't remember). I ordered extra tapes for my 1/3 scale.
I will see if I can find some pics of my 1/3 scale showing the fuse tapes.
Later!!

VJ,
Here are a few pics of my Cub. The tapes may not show up that well on the posted pics due to the size after posting. Send me your e-mail addy in a PM and I will send you the full size images. The tapes show up very well in the full pics.

I had to post another pic of my Cub, the wife took this pic while I was flying last week. It is my favorite shot of the Cub in the air. Really makes the Cub look like a real Cub.

Looks awesome with the blue sky. Tape will do the trick. Should the tape on the fuse be pinked or straight? I will send you my email thanks.

CK!,
Thanks for all that info! Wow... yeah...! Okay then, if going with Solartex it sounds like the best bet is to use the Natural and primer with either silver or white (I understand that it helps the yellow to really "pop out") and then the yellow (latex). If I recall correctly, Anthony, you recommended silver, correct? If going with Koveral I will need to seal the fabric first and then use the same paint method.
I think I might be leaning back to the Koveral again or maybe the fabric Anthony used on the DR1 (can't think of it off the top of my head.) VJ's "easy" statement really grabbed my attention!
Anthony, any chance of getting those photos you shot to VJ? I could use them in a year or so...
Thanks again guys for helping the newbie out!
Take care,
David

Will send the pics shortly.
If it were me I would just use grey primer then Yellow paint. The primer will give the yellow and good base and make it very opaque.

Grey? Okay. I got that "white base coat" from my neighbor who's building a RV8A in his garage. He should be done in about a year. It'll be a race between my model and his full size!
One more question then Anthony, what did you use for primer?
Thanks,
David

I always use Dupli-Color High Fill primer. It sand easily and the latex paint sticks very well to it. You can get it in grey and red.
You could spray white over the primer but it isn't necessary and would just add extra weight.

Cool! Thanks Anthony. I'll refrain further questioning until I get closer to covering.
I want to get started on my struts pretty soon and I may be contacting you with questions in that regard. For the most part though it seems pretty straight forward. Just a heads up!
Take care,
David

Pete I'm glad that these photos and info in thisthreadwill be able to help you with your project, I know it helped me with mine.....
Here are some photos of today's progress. I ordered all the pinking tape from Pink-it ttp://www.pink-it.net/to detail my plane once the covering is done.
