Eddie that is always my message! This deep divide was actually not an accident, it was promoted from within, and I can even give names, but since this is not a political forum i WILL NOT.

I work for many customers, and one of them is the government an some of it's "entities". Having worked for them since George Shultz (R.Regan) I have seen all kinds of administrations come and go. I have seen the best, I have seen the lousiest administrations. But presidents come, presidents go. Every morning you have thousands of people that get up in the morning and go to work to keep all of our arses safe. Because yes, believe me we have a lot of enemies abroad, and also within. Or do not believe me and just read about it:-) And we are not Republicans or Democrats defending Rep. or Dems. Just Americans doing a job, same as the guys working in uniform here or abroad.

Our DOJ deals with delinquents, and with crime. And we fight them day in day out. You make a dent, but you know crime will never end or go away, you just will have to keep fighting crime, forever. Same with our enemies abroad:-) Some of us liberals pack heat, and know how to shoot:-)

I cannot go into the theory why they want us divided, and why the experience proved (to the idea generators) it was the right move (for them)... because they will kick me out of here.

To the subject:

I flew a couple of old Pipers learning to fly PA11, PA12, but never a J3. I liked the PA12 best because of the horsepower:-) But the PA-11 or PA-18 were my favorites (prettier...).

I have a Sig 1/4 scale clipped wing with a 1.6 electric on 9 cells, and a Balsa USA with a very, very heavy Quadra 42... You cannot go wrong with a Cub 1/4 scale and up...

This winter I have to snatch me a 1/3 scale Balsa Usa.... Or mayne a 1/3 Dr-1, so many airplanes, so little time...

Hey Gerry, I'm glad you didn't go into all that on this forum.  It's good to know we have some Cub lovers out there in your position. 

I did consider going electric as almost all my models are electric.  But the price of the batteries just goes up to high and, well, being conservative and all, I just couldn't justify spending that much.  But look at me know, probably going way over budget on this build and I have my own budget crisis now!  (Not because of the airplanes though).  I might have to make some unpopular cuts with my constituents (my kids) to keep my airplane habit going.  We'll see how far that gets.  - - - Gee this is fun!

Just out of curiostiy, what does a 9s battery cost or what kind did you use?  What motor as well?

Hey Gerry,

All of us concealed carry "Okie's", as of Nov 1, can now open carry our guns. I am going to stay concealed though. But if someone happened to see it accidentally, we do not get into trouble anymore. So don't be alarmed if you come to Oklahoma and we all have our guns strapped on.

We are definitely a very divided country since 2008. It is not going to change anytime soon either.

I have the 1/4 scale Hanger 9 J-3 Cub with a Dle 20 on it. It has plenty of power and flys like the real thing.
I would like to build the Balsa USA 1/3 J-3 Cub also.

Do you like flying your Cubs? The full scale J-3 we had in 2006 was always a dream of mine since a little kid on the farm in western Oklahoma and a J-3 dropped our Sunday paper.
I finally got to ride in the one we bought when I was 62. Dream fulfilled!!!!! Awesome. I like all the Piper's and Cessna's though. The pic of the full scale J-3 below is the one we used to have that the new owner totally rebuilt to brand new room condition in 2010. You can google the #N42110 and click on Tex-Aero site and see pic's of the tear down and rebuild, pretty interesting to see. I also have the GP Waco YMF5 72" with a Dle 20 for power. It flys great also. I have a 95" Cessna Skylane Hanger 9 that is also a good one. Don't want to bore you with too much stuff.

So, if I stay in the USA, sounds like OK is and okay place to move to, especially if you can pack heat.  CA is one messed up place!!!  Beautiful and diverse scenery, but really messed up!!!

David, The second and last pictures are the full scale.. Come on over to OKC-pack heat and no trouble here most of the time.

Lots of flying too. A good friend of mine has a full scale Cessna 210 Centurion and a Cessna 172. Hanger 9 Cub weights about 16 #s.

Want messed up? I left San Diego Sunday the 28th at 6:30 AM going to Philly. Arrived to St.Paul/Minn, and they delayed our flight, and then again, and then again. when they finally cancelled (even though Philly was operational), the closest they could fly me was to Cleveland (via Memphis, a 74 passenger airplane with 5 people on board, flew first class that leg...). In Ohio I had to rent a car, and drive 8 hours to Philly, return the rental, pick up my truck, and drive home. I arrived 2 hours before the storm hit.

Cal. has some outstanding museums (aviation). I visit the museums every time I am in the west coast. I had a conference, but in the free time I managed to visit the AC carrier Midway, and the Museum in Plaza Balboa.

Gee Gerry, that was a messed up trip!  I've had some bad ones too, but not quite like that.

San Diego is a great place to visit!  Balboa Park with it's museums, Old Town, and a lot more!  My Aunt and Uncle used to live there.  Haven't been in a while and I'd like to go back sometime.

As far as CA being messed up, I was just frustrated with the election.  We voted a big tax increase, we chose to take the teeth out of 3 Strikes, we voted to have our food products labeled for GMO's.  In this economy our businesses don't need those kinds of stresses!  Once again, sorry if I offend anyone,  That's not in my nature and I really hate if I do!

So, back on subject, did they have any C/W Cubs in the museum?

I finally found some more pic's for you. This is a 1945 model J-3 Piper Cub built in Lock Haven, Pa. The guy that bought it from us in 2006 did a total rebuild in 2010 and it is now better than brand new. The new rebuild pic is on bottom right. Google N42110 TXAERO and you can see all the tear down and rebuild pictures. Awesome to see. The interior stick picture at the bottom is of a different plane.

Hey thanks Edie. Those are great, especially the two shots showing the control sticks (duh, that's what I asked for! ) It kind of gives me and idea of how to hook it up to my elevator servo too. Just went back to my wings for a while, tying to make them "plug-n-play". I'll see if I can get back to it later this weekend.

How would the os 1.60 twin power this cub? Thinking of using one cause it really looks scale like. Just wanting to hear about the power.

From what I hear the 1.60 is a good match for this plane.

That would have been my choice had it not been for the price.  Plus I wanted to go gas.  Go for it!

Of course there's alway's the exception. I have a fella that I have sold two engine's to. Both of them flew off the plane. Seriously, it happened. Twice!

hahaaa... that would be a sight to see

the power is there for sure... hardly ever used it though. i just love the ticking of that twin on the ground. everyone loves hearing that cub at our field.

I agree with you Robert, it's always nice to have an ample amount of power should you need it. If you don't need it you can throttle back and still fly "scale". Like David, I also had considered the 160 twin for my Cub but chose otherwise because of the cost. I think that is the perfect engine for that plane. JMO

I have the O.S 1.60 twin in my Cub, and I would like to hear witch size prop you "1.60 Cub´s" use?
The 16x8 or a 18x6 ??

Thanks for all the input. I just purchased my early Christmas present on ebay. 1.60 O.S. twin brand new and a bit cheaper than Towers price. Hope it all works out as good as I've heard.

Whew! Finally finished reading from beginning to end so hopefully I won't ask anything that has been covered. Up front I'll say thanks to all the guys that have kept this informative thread going.
My father in law found a long wing 1/4 scale Sig Cub NIB (but probably from the mid 80's) at an estate sale he was working. I mentioned it was neat and bada-boom! Now I have it. I haven't built a balsa plane in around 20 years so this is really going to be a trial by fire. I've been scratch building with coroplast the last 5 years or so. And before you think "PVC gutterpipe fuse"...nope. I folded fuse's for pattern planes, speed planes and even built a 105" span Piper Pawnee with a Quadra 40. Fun stuff and all off my own CAD plans. I toyed with the idea of buying a small balsa model to practice on but everything is a laser cut kit now and I think it would be a waste of time compared to this box of sticks.

Every plane has a story and this one's is that it was a regular cub rebuilt as a clipped wing to be entered in regional airshows. To that end it will be built as a good flying, well powered model that happens to be a scale cub, not a pristine static model that happens to fly. No offense to the awesome scale builds here, just not my bailey-wick. Anyhoo, I have studied this thread and a few others and have about all my goods for a winter build.

Ideas and materials:
Clipped, 2 piece wing by following plans but removing approximately 10" from each root.
Laminate carbon tow on spars to reduce structural need/load on struts.
Traditional wood struts but use pins and wave washers at joints for faster breakdown.
Reinforced wing seat and folding jury strut Cub Den mods. No door/window
Minor interior work. Just enough to cover working bits.
Recessed windows as done by others here.
Covering will be Cream Coverite 21st Century fabric with Orange painted top trim. Bottom wings will be B&W checker board or have invasion stripes.
As a winter build I didn't want to heat the garage to gun dope on the bird nor take the time for it. I used to use this Coverite stuff so hopefully I can still do it OK.
A new DLE-30 is downstairs just waiting...[>:]
If I foul up this cowl I'll get the fiberglass specialties version with no engines.
I like those Balsa engine kits too.
I have the foam filled 1/4 scale Dubro Cub wheels.
I'll use the kit landing gear to save the cash.
Might build a set of skis at the same time because the stupid Ohio winter will hang on til March. [:'(]
Pull-pull rudder, single elevator servo
I need to look up how to add a smoke system to a gasser.

Question: Is there any reason to reduce the dihedral or can I expect axial rolls and decent inverted flight on the stock setup?
