Finally got my windshield installed tonight. It ended up being much easier than I thought it would be. I made a template of the pattern out of cardstock and used it to adjust to a perfect fit. I traced the pattern to the windshield plastic I got from BUSA and installed formost 1/8" u-trim around the outside. I used some flat brass stock and #2 button head screws to hold everything together. I'll try to get some pics posted tomorrow.

Hey, nice job on the windshield there buddy! I don't recall if you said or not, but what are you using for your power system? (Motor type/size, ESC, etc.)

I've got a Hacker A60-7s with castle phoenix edge 120 hv esc on it. I chose that one because I was clueless about electric power and bascially just used the same set-up the SunDevilPilot used on his PA-18 Cub build and it looked like it flew well. http://youtu.be/oJcQ6ziRWII

Hey, learn from the success of others. That's just as good as learning from the mistakes of others!

She's coming along. All I've got left before she can fly is to put on a prop and make sure she's balanced. I'm looking for opinions. I have the big N number vinyl graphics for the wings. I'm debating whether to apply them both (top of right wing, bottom of left wing), just the bottom of the left wing or to skip them. Any opinions?

Skip them!!!! Our 1945 full scale J-3 did not have those big , ugly numbers. Just the small N # on the rudder/vertical stab. I took the big N #'s off my 1/4 Hanger 9 J-3.

This picture is of the J-3 we owned and sold in 2006. The guy totally rebuilt it in 2010 to better than brand new condition. No big N #'s, just the small one's on rudder.
J-3 Cubs are awesome!!!!
Thanks,
Eddie

My opinion? Put 'em on! I love those big beautiful NC numbers. No offense Cannonball, just my preference. The Cub I modeled mine after had both top and bottom.

Cub flyer, no offense here either. Just my preference too.

Do you live close to San Jose ?
That is where our j-3 pictured above moved to.

It's about 170 miles, 3 hour drive +/-. It would be a bit of a drive just to see it. Maybe I'll stop by the airport sometime if we go by on a vacation. If I ever happen to see it, I'll send you some pictures.

Was there suppose to be a "C" in there? Didn't most planes of that vintage have NC numbers? I might be mistaken.

It did not have a C . We ordered all the paper work documents and I might still have them. It was built in Sept of 1945 and was not in the military. Maybe that was the reason.
Thanks,
Eddie

Hi Cub flyer fresno, Ace and the other contributors. Thanks for sharing such an excellent build journey. I am currently up to covering the Sig 1/4 scale CW cub as well.
Appologies for the the long winded questions below:

I am stumped in one area an could sure use to advice re the Fuse fillet at the tail and the tail group mounting:
The book says " Lap and adhere the fillet covering piece over onto the top side of the fin bottom rib and cut it off there. Then, after shrinking the fillet area tight, cover the top part of the fin with a separate piece."

** Is the strut they speak of the 1/2" Fin bottom beam or the 1st horizontal 1/4" strut approx 1/3rd way up?

I have covered the Horiz stab and elev silver and will be covering the Fin and fuse yellow

**Also when gluing down the Tail group does the Horiz stab just glue to the fairing top edges or should I glue in a horiz flat between the angled fairings to give more grab area? same re the fin and thin side fairings do they also just edge glue and abbutt the Fin?

Thanks Neddy I dont know how I missed that page
That helps totally.
I have tried and the fillet was ok up till the point I tried to tack down the Transition curve n the turtle deck. It refused to stay down. and resulted in me tearing a bit further up the fuse spine. I have patched it but am considering ripping it all off for a second try.

I have had best luck by working the fabric on the fuse until i get to the transition of the fin. Then i just keep inching my way up the fin It is a big pain but looks good when you get it fixxed

Uhg! Yeah, that was a tough one. I had to rip mine off and give it a second try. I didn't follow the instructions so I can't really speak to that. And to tell you the truth, I don't exactly remember how I did it. I can tell you I did the top of each side of the fin and fuse. I think I ended up sealing the bottom of the fin last. I tried doing it per acerc's (aka Robert) instructions but ended up ripping the Solartex. Really, all I can say is... Good Luck!

Remember, photos when you finish!

Take care,
David

P.S. Neddy, to which post are you referring?

Thanks Guys I dont feel Quite so..inadequate now.
I have just curt a few strips using a straight edge and a very small Pinking wheel from American crafts (about 14 teeth per inch) as I am using 21st century coverite which is not comparable to Gary's Pinked tapes. Bit more subtle ie more a postage stamp edge but it covered up the fillet issues nicely.
i just hope the strips dont peel off with Flight use. Talk about tedious! wish I had known Gary uses Solartex from the start.

Gerk looking at it again one crease is still there (Im trying to ignore the saddle patch, maybe a pinked oveal) Wehn im done i think the tail covering will weigh 1 lb .
A plug for Him, he is a very straight shooting and helpful guy. Use Solartex and buy his product

Do you have to use Solartex to be able to use Gary's product? I wouldn't think so myself. In fact I know others, Anthony and Robert to name a couple, have use his Pink-It on other fabrics.

The words "this post" are a link to Sun Devil Pilot's Cub build where he describes covering the filet nicely. I ended up with 2 tries to get mine covered acceptably. Got the cub balanced today. It required about 6oz in the nose with all the batteries shoved all the way to the front. I just need to check my control throws and then she'll be done. I'll try to get some pics tomorrow.

The Cub is finished! Just in time for flying time to get a little harder to find. Next project, turning a corner of my basement into a shop so I can build my next plane!

Sweet neddy Hope it flys like a dream. Cub Flyer Gary suspected the tape colors wouldnt match as the Solartex is my a dyed effect than a gloss paint effect like the Coverite 21st fabric. he kindly sent some samples . The silver is close-ish but the yellow is a bit obvious. I painted some pinked bandage and it was ok but....
