Old Glory, my CAP-21 is done!
I just finished up my Byron's CAP-21. It uses a 45cc Homelite for power. You can see my conversion thread [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_1961133/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm]here.[/link] I also modified it in building. You can read all about that [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_2530163/anchors_2530163/mpage_1/key_cap%252Cmods/anchor/tm.htm#2530163]here.[/link] I have a Sullivan Smoke system on her, and moved the elevator servos to the tail. AUW is 18 pounds 8 oz WET. That is with 2 14 oz tanks. I'm already contemplating a diaper for the maiden. I've got over 60 hours into the covering job (thanks Termigator!). Any questions are welcome. Thanks.

The plane looks fantastic!!! I am a self proclaimed Cap fanatic. I also have a Byron kit un-built, two Great Planes Cap 21's 60 size, three Great Planes Cap 21's 40 size, and two Modeltech 40 size Cap 21's. Not to metion the group of Cap 232 kits I am also collecting. I just finished a Great Planes 40 size Cap 232 and my next project is going to be one of the 40 size Cap 21's. Gene

Hi BobbyG,
Lovely job! You should be very proud.
Does the name of your club have anything to do with funding such large projects? Or arn't there any negative connotations on "Golden Triangles" in the USA. Just kidding.
Let us all know how the maiden went and where you had the paramedics stationed?
Cheers,
Colin

RE: Old Glory, my CAP-21 is done!
Thanks for the compliments, guys. I am very proud of that covering job. This is only my third attempt at covering, and I used [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_603331/anchors_603331/mpage_1/key_american%252Cflag/anchor/tm.htm#603331]Termigator's method[/link], so he gets part of the credit. I am VERY nervous about the maiden. Partly because today was the first time I have been able to fly in about 6 weeks, and because of the stories I have read with this planes tendency to snap and tip stall. It will be a while before I have the confidence to put her up. Hopefully the weather will cooperate around here and I can get a little stick time on my other planes to warm me up for the CAP. I don't want to pile up my tribute to America. Thanks again for the good words.

I had a Byron Cap 21 and it will fly great. Too much elvator and it will snap so be careful landing, don't get too slow or when you get just the right (TOO MUCH) elvator it will snap to the ground. Also, be very mindful of the gas vapors as they will disolve the foam in this aircraft.

Well, she flys! Plans call for no right thrust, and I modify the firewall to give it 3 degrees right. The take-off was a near miss with an electric fence because it was pulling left so hard, I can't imagine what it would've been like with no right thrust added. Once in the air, I open her up and do a few circuits to get used to the flying characteristics. She needed 3 clicks of right trim, and 3 clicks of up trim. About this time my stomach is in my throat, and my knees are a knocking. She felt HEAVY in the air. She also needs more elevator than the manual suggests. I think i will double the elevator throw, and mix in a bit of expo on that channel. She also needs a bit of rudder coupled in with the ailerons. Most of my banks resulted in a nose high attitude. After about 8 or 9 minutes, I decide I better start shooting some approaches. She doesn't slow done as fast as what I am used too, and it took me three apporaches to really get the feel of it. On landing, I wish I had had about 100 feet more runway. It touched down about half way through the field. Nice touchdown and if I had the room would've been no problem. As i am getting closer to the end of the runway, I try slowing it down by wagging the rudder. Man, is that rudder SENSITIVE!! She got a bit sidways, and the damn wheel collar falls off. The resulting lost wheel caused the gear to grab and the plane did a half cartwheel. Great, I thought. She's gonna be busted up.
Thankfully, all the damage was limited to the metal parts. Gear is bent, but easily bent back into shape. I broke the front exhaust pipe, right at the threads. And the prop was in 3 pieces. 2 or 3 hours and 30 or 40 bucks and she will fly again. I didn't have enough flight time to try anything, other than a vertical pull. Although she felt heavy in the air, the vertical upline was strong and true. I've got to get used to her, I think. No rolls, or loops, and for some reason the ready to go smoke didn't work. All tweaks have been noted, and will be employed before the next flight. I wish she was a few pounds lighter, but a bit more flight time might make me change my mind.
I do have a video of it, and will post it shortly. And I didn't even mess my shorts.
