Rotccapt, Thank you for that info! Yes I would like to see the pics that would be immensely helpful. I have seen what you have posted here but I didn't see anything with the detail that you described. Either that or I must not been looking hard enough. This thread is huge and difficult to sift through at times.
And yes I did purchase the offset struts. I will have to break out the dremel and xacto this weekend.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
Well, I finally finished my TF P-51B mustang, and maiden her this last weekend. I had some minor tuning issues with my saito 100, but the 1st flight was good. I didn't do any fancy stuff, just several laps and i brought her back to base. I need to do some cowling triming since the muffler is a little close to the cowl, and kinda melted the cowl a little. I'll try to get some pics of her and maybe a video to keep this thread going.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
Hey Guys
I am building the same p51 gold edition kit and would like some more information on installing the Robart 605 with robostruts (653) which I plan to use, on the plan it says to use 31/2 inch wheels with605 robarts but when you check out the Robart website it shows 31/4inch wheels suit these robostruts, is it possible to still fit 31/2 inch wheels to these robostruts if I need to? Or can I still use 31/4 inch wheels if I cannot use 31/2 inch for this 60 size p51?
How far up the wire strut do I cut so I can install the robostruts?
How much do I have to carve out of the wing frame to install the robostruts?
Has anyone attempted this installation before?
Do I have to beef up the area where the retracts will be installed?
Thanks

Dutchy,
You may want to look at part # 662L and 662R for the Robostruts. They will accommodate both wheels of your choosing. The only difference is the diameter of the Robostrut itself from 3/8 to 7/16th. There are a great number of people on this thread who have used the 7/16th sized Robostrut. It also may require you to sink the retract a bit further in the wing and yes it would be wise to beef up the area around the retract. There are several users in the thread that have posted pictures of their solutions to this. As for how far your going to have to cut will be up to you. Retract installation isn't straight forward past what the manual tells you. It is straightforward if you just use the wire strut with the retract.

Thanks rotccapt
Did you install these in the same location as the Bellcrank on the plans, if you did, did you lay them on their side? why I`m asking is the hight on these Hobbico servos measure a very, very tight fit! according to my wing frame. Or did you install them in an other area of the wing.
Thanks

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
i dont remember where they were in relation ship to the bell crank but here is a pic of the location. my only recommendation would be to mount them closer to the spar and perhaps one more bay inboard. i had to use the micro servo because a standard servo was too thick to fit on its side in the location that i cut my bay. had i installed it closer tot he spar or one bay inboard a standard servo would have fit. hope this helps.

Thanks for the pics and information, just one other thing I would like to ask! Do you remember what micro servo you may have used?

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
Hello
Am fitting Robart 605 retracts to my Top Flite Kit P-51 1/7th scale and using Robart 653 struts.
Can someone please inform me what lengthI need if any,I need tocut ofmy strutsto suit this plane.
I have removed the wire struts with the coil andconnected the small 3/16 (about 5/8 th long 3/16 wire which the struts connect to.
Is there as formula one has to follow to find out the right height for this plane?

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
it all depends on where you want the wheels to go into the wing at your best bet is to take and position the wheels where you want them and then attach your strut to the wheel and then measure the length you need.
have you sheeted the wing yet? if so you will need to remove the sheeting around the area you want the wheels so that you can see where the ribs and spars are this way you do not cut in to the spar. i hope this helps

Thanks for getting back to me, no the wing is not sheeted yet so will do what you have said.
This is my first build .
Am also planning to install the OS 120 Surpass 111 over the Saito 125 as this model seems to want extra weight in the nose. Not sure if I should go for the Surpass with fuel pump or not?
Also is there a muffler to suit this motor that lets the exhaust out from underneath the cowl?

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
I was planning on asking Santa for a brand new Saito 125 Golden Knight for my TF Gold Edition P-51. Then it occurred to me that I might spend all that $$ (or Santa will) only to find out that the engine is too large for the plane.
Has anyone put a Saito 125GK into their Mustang? If you did, were there any problems with the fit, or any cooling issues later on when you got the plane into the air.
Thanks for any help you can give.
Bob

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
i used a saito 125 in mine and did not run into any issues i converted mine to gas but it is the same engine. i have only flown mine once but i flew it without the cowling for extra cooling so i am not sure on the over heating issue. but it should not be a problem when running on glow. on my plane the rocker covers do stick out the bottom of the cowl but it will be similar with any 4 stroke engine of this size. hope this helps

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
Hi, I'm new in this forum, but also building the Mustang.
I'm still building my wing and fighting with my landing gear (Robart 520), but I was trying to plan in advance how I'm going to set up my servos in the fuse.
I was wondering if this kit usually is nose or tail heavy?
I'm just trying to figure out the layout of my servos and battery trying to minimize adding weight to center the plane.
So far I was assuming that the plane was going to be tail heavy, so I was trying to move everything as forward as possible, but after reading some post in the forum I may be wrong and it is nose heavy????
Could you please tell me how it was in your case?
I'm planing to use an OS .95ax (26.28oz or 745gr)
Thanks in advance (and please, apologize me for my English)
Ricardo
