RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
Thanks, bigstew,
I was talking with a couple of friends today and one was noting that he had a hard time getting his OS 91 to run consistently when it was mounted inverted. I'll have to keep an eye on that and try some tests in another airplane.
Another friend suggested that perhaps I might want to get my hands on a Top Flite kit sooner rather than later because kits might be becoming a thing of the past.
Ticketec, I went back and re-read some posts about your retracts. Did you wind up using the Robart HD606's because of the 85-degree stance?
Any comments on Century retracts?
Bob

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
Hey N1EDM,
Yeah i used the hd606's because i wanted the 85-degree's. 90 is too much movement and the gear wil look splayed out. 85 is a little on the short side, but 85 is miles better than the 90. i have just got a set of sierra retracts for a 89" (1/5) P-51D i'm about to start building and they come with 88-degrees of rotation. perfect i reckon.
Comments on century.... well to start with, i have never owned a set or have even held them in my hands, so take what i say with a pinch of salt, but from the post and pic's i have seen/read, a fair amount of people have had problems with them.. not everyone, but a fair few, and second, in my eye's they are NOT as scale as the robarts.
having said that, i'm not happy with my robarts either, and have posted some time ago about their low quality machining, and slop.... i'm having a trouble with them too.
Guess i've given you more problems than answers. sorry
thanks

N1EDM:
I have the CJ retracts. I have them installed. They are not scale. They do seem to be really nice. On my next mustang, I plan on making it more scale with landing gear doors. You know the routine. The second one will have all of the bugs worked out. Also the CJ seem to bit more "spendy" as a friend of mine would say.
Good luck with your build.

N1,
I have the CJ retracts as well and have had no issues with them. I do recommend the robart adjustable valve actuator to help control the air flow. The CJ's are mor robust than the robarts, but the robarts are more scale. Both look fine when covered with the main gear doors. They also cost about the same. If you go to the CJ site you will see a large variety of struts and gear for every type of plane. Also, the customer service at CJ is outstanding. I sent my retracts to them becuase one of the gears was leaking air prior to my installation and they fixed the problem without charge.

Greetings
I have read this thread , ( yes , the whole thing ) and I must say that it is the best informed thread that I have ever read [sm=thumbs_up.gif][sm=thumbs_up.gif] , This one absolutly deserves the two thumbs up The discuction on the retracts is awsome .
For the retracts this is what I have I have concluded :
1) Robart 531 RS 85 degree
2 ) 663 struts from Robart
This is where I m still a little confused
3 ) Robart 4 inch diamond studed wheels or Dave Brown 4 inch foam Lite wheels .
When installing the retracts I will build a mock-up of the wing were the retracts are installed , I thought that this was a great idea ( THANK YOU to the one who thought of this ) It will elimiate a lot of guess work , yes its the long read , but I feel that its the smoothest
I will be rereading this thread again , in its intiraty
TOO ALL INVOLVED IN THIS THREAD : SUPER WELL DONE and Thank You .

Hey Tic glad to here she's flying as well as she looks! I'm trying to catch up with you guys here . I've been doing too much flying, Going to too many airshows. I can't seem to post any pics but the half scale cub is posted in my gallery.

To Michel. I seem to remember somewhere in this thread is mentioned using dave brown 4" foam wheels and the person sanded them so they wern't so thick. It made them fit in the wing easier. Don't remember if it was because of the gear doors or not?
Buck.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
that was me that sanded down the foam tires...,
my measurements indicated that the wheel can only be 1 inch wide in order to fit within the cross section of Rib #2
I posted sketches of this a few pages back
good luck

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
I started mocking up the right hand wing panel last week, and verified what one of the other builder's discovered: using the Robart 531RS mains means that most of the leading end of rib 5 gets cut away to make room for the outboard air cylinder.
I think I'll remake the mounting rails so that they extend to and through rib 6, and all three ribs (4, 5 &6) out of 1/8 ply.
I plan to do a lot of reinforcing- epoxy mixed with Violet milled fiberglass as well as the usual triangle stock stuff.

Hi Mustang Fever
I have not started my build yet , but am getting my thoughts to-gether to do so . Reading you re thoughts about what you are going to do . I have had an idea about reinforceing the retract system . Would this work : Lets say you take a piece of rectangular flat aluminum (or fiberboard )and first attach it to the retract ( perpendicular ) , there would be a groove on the end to allow the retract to open and close . At the opposit end , would be 4 holes , that would be attached to rails . in-turn these rails could be dirrectly attached to the spars and the ribs ( on the front and the rear of the spars ) . Since the retracts have to be as low as possible wouldn t there be enoegh room ? These are only thoughts [sm=71_71.gif] . I thought that this might replace all the reinforcement , and glue , that is needed . One flat attachment , bolted to rails attached to the spars and ribs dirrectly .
I think that the idea of building a mock set-up of the wing is a great idea , very wise

I've been imagining along those lines for some time, now. Sort of a metal "box" that could be bolted to a couple of the ribs. Something like that, anyway.
One of the reasons for doing the mockup is so I can experiment with ideas like yours.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
I finally maidened my tf p-51c this weekend and she is still in one piece. I had to adjust the aileron trim all the way to the right and she still turned left. Fighting this to keep her straight caused me to loose focus on the landing and she ended up in some trees. after a few aileron adjustment I took her up once more to make sure the problem was fixed and do a better job on the landing. I chopped the throttle a little early and she began to descend very quickly but I was able to save it. Over all it went well. I did bend my gear and had issues with the muffler staying on but I am very happy with how she flys. Unfortunately my military duty is forcing me to hang her up for a few months. Here are a few photos and video. I forgot my gear doors at home so they are not on yet but they will be on for the next flight.
