RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
So is the general consensus that the airplane comes out tail heavy? If so, I am thinking about throwing my 140dz I have laying around in there. Insane power.

I am building an ARF P-51 thats about 1/6 scale, just a little bigger than your plane. It calls for the 140dz sport, which is supposed to drag it around with power to spare. On your P-51 I think it would have your plane climb like a homesick angel!

Hehe, thats the point, the thing is I lose about 20% of power and prop efficiency up here, so it'd probably be just right. I just am wondering about how everyone's balance is coming? If it needs tail weight, i dont want to make it worse by a larger engine, but if the airplane needs nose weight, no better weight than an engine.

My mustang came out perfectly balanced with a tower hobbies 75 on the front, not an ounce of lead. I think it all depends on how heavy your finish is, my total weight is only about 8.5lbs.

I know what you mean; I went to college in Colorado Springs and I remember the Byron DF F-16 guys barely having the oomph to get off the ground. More than one plane went in at 7,258 MSL (altitude of our runway) due to lack of power, high AOA, or too steep a turn.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
As long and we are telling engine stories, I did mine up with an RCV120. Had to add a bunch of lead in the tail, entire plane was 13.5 lbs (mostly engine). I concur with zope pope's thinking. I changed the engine to a Satio 150 and ended up nose heavy and lost a pound, but the balance but reasonably close! I had a heavier wing after a mishap with the ferocious torque of that RCV spinning a four-blade prop. I replaced it with sheeted foam, I have to admit the concept was good, but once again, heavier. The entire plane was also fiberglassed, painted, and I used Black Byron presto in stratigic locations. It had every imaginable feature I could think of, making it an 8 channel, 10 servos. I learned my lesson. If you intend to fly it and enjoy it, be realistic about it. If you want to load a plane up with all the bell and whistles, save it for the larger ones, they can handle the extra weight, much better. Most .60 size aircraft all have to fly much faster than scale to overcome drag (remember air molecules do not get scaled down with the airplane), a heavy small airplane is a receipt for disaster! Land a heavy fast warbird and even a greaser can rip the gear off. My Mustang was impressive but its life was sort lived.

Yes I sacrificed scale perfection for flying performance but it looks good and flies great. I even built the wing with an open structure, like an aerobatic plane. These 60 size are small enough so the super scale stuff doesnt really show up in the air anyways.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
I put an OS 91fx in mine and had to put 2oz of weight in the tail. For the first few flights I had a 14x6 prop on it and had trouble flying it. The torque at full throttle was crazy. I put a 13x6 on it and it flew perfect with no problems. Once I get used to flying it witht the 13 on it I might switch back to the 14 and see if I can work with it.

Well the "as many bells and whistles as i could squeeze into her" P-51B is ready for clear coat finnaly.
I still have to install and set up the elevator, aileron and throttle servos, but other than that and a few minor odds and ends, she is complete.
thanks

Nice job! Would love to hear the stories of your maiden flight and see some video. After all that, you ARE going to put on an antenna mast right? Hint: use a credit card, they are flexible and easily replaced!

Simply astounding!
I'll try to post some pics this week of my progress, but I am still at finishing up the fuse stages. :P Tic is definitely a motivator though!

Hey Fellas,
Thanks for all the compliments She has come out pretty nice, but the proof is in the flying!!!!
I'm also still waiting on Pro-mark who are doing my nomenclature for her ( all the no push, no shove, oil goes here, top up bullets here, etc...). They do not have a 1/7 scale sheet available in their lineup and so i have done all the artwork for them and they will produce the sheet, and will also offer it for sale to other people if they want it. But i got an email form them about a week ago that they have not even opened my file and will not start on it till after top Gun and so i could expect to hear something in mid may..... where already there.
hey Shihtzutan,
The aerial, tail wheel doors and other minor bits and pieces including the finishing of the cockpit and installation of the pilot will happen some time after the first flights, once i'm happy with the way she is flying. thanks for the tip on the aerial and the credit card, andi do plan to make it removable to save it from transport damage.
thanks

Ticketec,
Looking good but I think the (new shiney red) front end spoils all your weathering details somehow it just don't fit. Maybe you have plans to weather that of course your starter might put a weathered used telltail ring around your spinner sure not very scale however. Here are some samples of some waethering I'm doing on my Navy T-34 Mentor Top-Flite kit inside & and out (LAR scale) Looks About Right.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
Well I took my p-51b out for its first flight today. It flies awesome! I have a YS91AC powering this baby and it cruised at about 110-120mph at 3/4 throttle. The plane has come out at a total wieght of 11.7lbs with all the bells and whistles that I have put in it. The bad news: my gear mounts weren't strong enough and the gear folded under the wing on landing. It was immediate without warning. The bright side of all of this is that there was only minor damage that will be repaired with in a few days. It will probably come out even stronger. My recommendation to anyone building this outstanding model is to strengthen the gear rails as much as possible.
Tic-your bird looks fantastic. Very scale in appearance. It matches with the pics I used to replicate my Shangri-la.

Hey Sticktickler,
The front of her look new and shiny because it was painted in gloss paint. only stuff i had here at home that i was happy with color wise. The red painted stuff is weathered and now that i have cleared the whole aircraft, it might show up better in the pic's. will take some more shortly, was hoping for some nice sun, but the rain decided to come out instead.
Your t-34 looks great! have you got some more pic's of here? but the looks of your job so far it will be a show stopper!
Well, got the guts to put her on a set of scales, but my bathrooms ones didn't want to play nice so i used the more accurate kitchen ones but had to take some bits and pieces off so as to not overlead the scales.
I was wrapped with the figures!!!! after thinking that my wing was a fair bit overweight, the fuse has compensated for it. She should come out at about 11.6lb!!!!!![8D]
I was going to be happy with anything under 12lb and nervous over 12.5lb, so all good! but those figures are if i dont use any lead, and mine looks to be a little nose heavy for now, but the batteries can be moved around a fair bit.
going away for the weekend, so it will be next week before i get her closers to finished.
Chalre, thanks mate!, i'm still trying to decide if i should have the front half of the spinner painted white, but i have pic's that show either all red, or the white/red combo......
thanks

I have both an all red and a red/white combo spinner. I was originally going to go with the white and red combo, but the faded all red spinner looks more realistic with the era in which it was flown. However, I may change my mind sometime in the future to mix things up a little.
Well I was able to fix the wing and gear mounts fairly quickly, and they are solid. I will fly her again next week.
I am using a 14/10 schimitar II prop on my YS91AC. I was worried that the engine would not have enough power to fly my plane at 11.6lbs, but that doubt was quicly gone after the first high speed pass.

I'm torn myself between Shangri la, Hun Hunter - Texas, or Hat - Jane. If I do Shangri la I will be compared with Ticketec and I certainly don't want that. I always liked the white spinner though

How did you fix or beef up the mounts? I'm questioning the integrity of mine. I had to take some material off to fit my gear in the wing.
I put extra doublers in, but the rail themselves don't seem substantial enough. I at one point thought about aluminum rails but was told it's overkill.
On a different note Is anyone planning to use the KELEO mufflers? A buddy in our club said it was a bear to install.
He used a saito 100 I guess the offset in the nose was throwing him off. Any thoughts or ideas before I buy mine?
