RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
Greetings
This thread has more information , more than I ve seen on any other thread , amazing and there are a lot of people responsable . I ve also found out that there are a lot of passonate people here , willing to help . If theres one good thing about the internet , it brings people to-gether WOW
I m starting my build next week . I ve already read this thread twice , and I m going to read it one more time .
I do have one question though: why is it that this plane is 1/7 scale and it s suppose to have 4 inch wheels , and yet if we try and put 4inch wheels we have a lot of trouble ? Does this mean that Robart makes there wheels too fat or does Topflite make there wing too thin ? Where the line ?
I ve finally made a decicion about my retracts : Robart 531rs , struts 663 Dave Brown 4inch wheels . Hopefully in the near future I ll have a new computer and a new camera , so that I can show photos
Modelers are unic
Happy Flying

I agree that this has been a very informative thread. There was a thread some time back that asked "what was the biggest development in RC?". I responded, the internet and RCU. I know that I have benefited so much from it as a builder. In the past, it would have taken perhaps decades for me to learn all that I have in the last 3 years online here.

The guy on RC Scalebuilder is building a Ziroli P-51... lots of good discussion there too.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
The aircraft are looking great. I have finally made some progress with my build and will try to post a few pictures of my progress a little later. I am at the point of glassing the airframe with 3/4 oz fiberglass and it is turning out awesome. I do have a question for you all that my local hobby shop did not have an answer for, As far as covering the rudder where it is not skinned with balsa, what do I use to cover it? Z poxy and fiberglass? I am stuck at this point and could use some advice.
Thank you. Joe[>:]

Joe,
The rudder is fabric covered except for the trim tab and balance tab. Use something like Koverall and dope (or paint of choice) and don't forget the rib tapes and stitching . Fiberglass and epoxy are not designed to span open areas and will never "tighten up". The photo is of N 314BG, an F-51D painted as "Petie 2nd", S/N 414151 and is based at Creve Coeur Airport near St. Louis. I was trying to get a shot of the fin offset, but you can see the trim tab in the fore ground and the rib stitching and tape on the rudder. P2 is the port side, P3 is th starboard side. P4 is the same as P1 but with out flash and you can see the edges of the "pinked" tapes better. The pictures also show how colors can be affected by the type of lighting, flash, sunlight, shadow, and indirect.

Scott,
Thanks for the alternative FABRIC covering, I couldn't think of them when I posted. Polyester dress lining fabric is another possibility as are some other types, both iron on and glue on with Stix it (sp?) and Poly-Tak. And then there is good old Silk and Dope from years gone by, but quality silk is hard to find. I have been using Koverall with Randolf Dopes and having good luck with them.

You guys are awsome. Now I just have to get the fabric. LOL. This is my first build and I am very appreciative of all the info. Not only has it made it enjoyable but very educational at the same time.

Hi
Well I ve read this thread three times , I ve also read additional threads that were given with this thread and after all this , I m not building the 1/7 scale Mustang I M BUILDING THE TF !/5 MUSTANG GIANT ( Wooooppiii ) Whoever whats to take responseablity for this , don t be shy
I ll have the kit to-morrow night
It will have a DA-50r engine ( already ordered ) with a Keleo mufler ( just cann t wait ) with a True-Spun 5 inch spinner ( just think how that will look )
But in all seriousness , i injoyed this thread so much , I want to go as scale as much as possible , the real reason was the fuel . here in Canada its $30 a gallon ( 3.7 Liter ). This year alone I spent almost $500 in fuel , thats a lot of money . The DA50r can go onto a lot of planes and the eqvalant is $60 in gas
Another reason was the size of the tank 14oz for a Saito 125 , pushing the throudle , a 8 minute flight , just not long enoegh .
The Giant Mustang will cost me about $500 more and it will be more stable in the air , but these are just my personal thoughts .
This is one of the best thread builds on RCU .
Thanks too everyone
Be well and have fun .

One of my good friends owns a hobby shop and he has had this ARF sitting in his shop for over a yr maybe two. The other day we were talking and his son needed a BMX bike... Well I had 2 in my basement .. My Sons are 18 - 19 and have found Cars and girls... Ask the one son if I could trade his bike for the mustang and GUESS who is the proud owner of a TF Giant Scale P-51 Mustang ARF and his son has a pretty cool BMX bike... Already have a Brisson 50cc gasser sitting there waiting for a home... Ordered the scale Muffler.. Need the cockpit kit... and Retracts... sliding canopy... LOL Gotta love this Addiction... have read this thread a few times... Need to highlight some areas... and send this post so I can find it... Can't wait till next spring when it will be ready... Live in NY so we have the winters for building...

Hi Zope Pope
I ve built afew planes now and I find that in all the builds that I ve finished there was a , a slow point , a wait period , boreing , or something had me stuk , I think that it goes with every build . What I do is go back to what drove me to do the model in the first place .
And the fact that ARFs are so dam easy to buy , at so low a cost . Our time is so presious to us . I remember the first day of every first flight , it makes it all worth it , it s better than any beer . This is what I do when I get tired of a build . Just my thoughts . I imagine some people do it a differrent way .
If any of this makes sence , have a good cold beer [sm=thumbs_up.gif]

I seem to be "stuck" also, but it is flying season here in Michigan, not building season
I have tickets to the Mustangs & Legends event coming in two weeks
http://www.gml2007.com/
if this doesnt motivate me, nothing will......
and here is a video trailer for the event to help pump us up

Zope start watching RC P-51 videos on line . See if that works , But remember what beagle said. IT'S FLYING SEASON!
Us northerners know build when it's cold. Your from CO. it must get cold? Sometimes, maybe, could be . or when you get like 8' of snow.
Good luck Buck.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
well guys,
I have some food for thought.....
I know that these models have a somewhat weak retract area, and that we have spent many post talking about beefing up that area. but i must caution on over strengthening it.
below are pic's of my mustang that failed to flare on approach..... As you can see on the left hand side of the wing, the mounting area was stronger than the balsa around it causing significant damage when it ripped the leading edge out. the ply bearer on the right wasn't of as good a quality ply, and that gave way. this resulted in far less damage to the model overall...
So the moral of the story is this, yeah, streangthen the area, but watch by how much you do it!!!
thanks
dave
i'll try get the video posted in the next few days
