Need some info on my GP Super Sportster 90
I have 4 flights on this Plane so far, and it is powered by a Super Tigre G90 with 13x6 MA K Prop. The first 2 Flights I had it powered by a Saito 100 4 stroke with 15X6 APC. The Saito has a ton of power, but it did seem a little doggy on this particular Plane. The Super Tigre G90 seems like a little better match, and seems to pull the Plane around at a pretty good clip now. Information about this Plane seems pretty scarce here on RCU, and I was just wanting to hear from those who have had this Plane, and might have some good information to share about it. One thing that I have noticed that I would like to fix is the Wing Mounted Gear seems a little flimsy. I could change the style of gear and move it forward, but I like the looks of it where it is. Moving it forward would also help eliminate alot of added weight in the nose, but like I said, I kind of like the gear where it is at. Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I never knew there was a 90 size. My brother is currently finishing a 60 size, fabric covered. I've only seen pictures since he started painting but it looks pretty good.

And I could only afford the 40 size! I just had a dead stick on the first flight. Decided to put it down hard near the end of the runway as I was going to go into the weeds at the end.
If I didn't have wheel pants there woudl have been no damage. Instead there are now two holes in the underside of the wing from the somewhat pointy rear of the wheel pants. Made quite a loud noise to as it "popped" the monokote.
Easy fix but no more wheel pants om grass for me.

Hi Ray,
Your SS90/120 looks great. I have had a SS120 for about 8 years. I installed a YS120 in mine. Its been one of my favorite planes to fly. I have never had any trouble with the landing gear. Flimsy gear is better than breaking wood unless it effects landing or takeoffs. Enjoy,
Jerry

My SS20 is powered by an OS .25FP with a Macs 1 piece pipe. Flies with authority but I wish I had used a BB engine instead. I have an Irvine .25MKII but the engine is red and would have clashed with the Steelers color scheme I used.
I also have a GMS .32 but retrofitting it would involve rebuilding the nose quite a bit and I dont wanna do that.
Wish I could help ya with the 90.

RE: Need some info on my GP Super Sportster 90
I have a 60 size with a Tower .75 turning a 12x6 at 16,000rpms and she screams. This plane, though she fly's well slow, needs speed! That's all there is to it. But reading your original post, I don't think that its the engine selection. I think it's the prop.
Here goes:
GS90 w/13x6 = 6" * 15,000rpm * 60minutes / 12 / 5280' = 85.23mph
Saito 100 w/15x6 = 6" * 10,000rpm * 60minutes / 12" / 5280' = 56.82mph (she will probably fly straight up though).
I would go with a 13x10 on the Saito 100 so:
Saito 100 w/13x10 = 10" * 10,000rpm * 60minutes / 12" / 5280' = 94.70mph
These calculation of course are theoritical and do not account for drag, but my 60 SS has been clocked on level flight nearly 90 mph and she is very happy at that speed.
So if you want to stick with the 4 stroke, change your prop for speed rather than power.
Here goes:
GS90 w/13x6 = 6" * 15,000rpm * 60minutes / 12 / 5280' = 85.23mph
Saito 100 w/15x6 = 6" * 10,000rpm * 60minutes / 12" / 5280' = 56.82mph (she will probably fly straight up though).

Oh, if I had em all built I couldnt get into the garage! As I said, only the 20 is built. The other SS20 is still in the box along with both SS 40's, the SS40 MKII, SS60, AND the SS Bipe.
Think I forgot to mention the RCM Sportster...
Oh, and the partially built SS20 that some guy at the field just handed me one day. It paid to be the only one with kit built planes at the field that morning. [8D]
Guess Im a Super Sportster Hoarder.
Wont go into my list of Kaos/Chaos kits waiting to be built. Actually building one of those right now tho...
My name is Dan and I'm a Kit-aholic...

RE: Need some info on my GP Super Sportster 90
I just bought another Super Sportster 90/120 kit on ebay a week or so ago, and got it for $150. There was also a little Super Sportster Bipe kit on there at the same time I would have liked to have owned. I didn't get back in time to bid on that one, and am not sure how much it went for. Sometimes it is just hard to tell. The SS 90/120 kit I just got was complete and the wood and hardware all look great. So if you seen one go for $290, that makes me that much happier about the price I gave for mine.

I remember seeing that on Ebay. Thought about it but I still have SS 9/120 that is built but not covered yet. I also saw the SS Bipe but had already got a Great Plane Aeromaster Bipe. Only $126 for that one. You just have to catch the auctions at the right time when two people are not driving up the price. And you have the best chance if snipe at the last minute.

Here is a link to pictures that will show you what a Super Sportster looks like with the gear moved forward of the wing.

RE: Need some info on my GP Super Sportster 90
Its been a few months since I posted to my thread here, but I have since built the second Super Sportster kit I bought, and talked about in an above post. The new Super Sporster 90/120 will be going up for a maiden flight toay. This Plane was built pretty much stock except that I did buy landing gear(funtana 90) to mount just in front of the wing. I also sealed the elevator hinge line, installed guide wires, and added tristock reinforcement under the stab. The Plane has a SK 90 2 stroke engine mounted on the nose swinging a 14x6 prop, and a 16 oz tank was installed for a little extra run time. The Plane is also only equipped with 4 servos instead of the 6 standard that I used in my other Super Sportster 90/120. I used Hi-tec 605 High Torque servos on the Elevator, Rudder, Ailerons, and a standard Futaba 3004 on throttle. I saved a bit of weight this way, and the servos seem to have plenty of pull since the surfaces really are not that big on a sportster anyhow, and especially compared to that of some 3d style planes. I was able to balance the Plane just by shoving the battery clear forward in the tank compartment. Only 1/2 oz lead required in left wing tip for good lateral balance. Should be a good flyer.
Edit: After Maiden Flight, the Plane required another 1/2 oz of lead on the light wing tip, and about 3 oz has been added to the nose to help make the Plane less pitch sensitive.

RE: Need some info on my GP Super Sportster 90
I have enjoyed the postings here on the Super Sportster's .... I have a new kit built SS 60 and I need a canopy or windshield.... Can you tell me where you purchased your canopy or windshield ( if not in the kit) and what you recommend... The top of my SS 60 fuse is flat and is an older kit... Thanks..

You can still order the canopy's for the Super Sportster kits. Here is the one you need.

RE: Need some info on my GP Super Sportster 90
Got to maiden flight my Super Sportster 90/120. I was very impressed with the SK 90 engine which started the very first flip after me and my buddy fixed a fuel tank restriction. We ran two tanks through it, and it was ready to be put in the air. The Plane handled very well on the ground, but as soon as I took off I new that I had my C.G way to far back(tail heavy) as the Plane was very pitch sensitive and I struggled to maintain control while I brought it around to land in a slight cross wind. The engine was also a bit lean in the mid range and needed richened up a bit. I managed to get the Plane down, and somehow managed a nice smooth landing. Even though my nerves were shot at this point, I added some nose weight, dialed down the throws a little on the elevator, fueled up and took off again. This time the Plane flew much better, but was still a bit pitch sensitive on the elevator, and it was still just a bit heavy on one side, so I brought it in and added a bit more nose weight, and added a 1/2 oz to the light wingtip. Fueled up and took it off again. This time the Plane flew good, and if I could have settled my nerves some I might have tried a few manuevers, but just flew several simple ovals to get aquainted with the Plane a little. I will have to get some more flying in on this Plane to make a good asessment of how well I am going to like it. This is my second Super Sportster 90/120, and the third Super Sportster I have owned. My other two were great flyers and I expect that this one will be as well once I get it tweaked and tuned to my liking.

Thanks for the info on the canopy from Tower for a Super Sportster 60.... That canopy will require trimming to fit the the flat top of the fuse..... I was hopeing for an exact or near exact fit... Thanks... Richard

Ray- you talk about having to add nose weight to get your SS 120 to fly correctly. Once you had it set up properly, where is the balance point?
