Default Engine for a GP Cap 232 40

My next kit I have sitting on my shelf is a Great Planes Cap 232 40. I have read that this plane is a little lack luster with a 46fx on in. I also read that it was tail heavy with a forty. This plane will be for pattern flying, not 3d and I would really like to put a 2 stroke in it. So I plan on putting a 61 in the plane. What do you guys think? Would a 61 be OK with this kit?

I did searches and found a lot of info on this plane... but I need more! Is there any mods, tips or tricks anyone would like to add?

I plan on starting on the kit next week sometime, I will post my progress here...

TIA
Gum

Hi Gum,

There is another thread about the GP CAP 232 40 where must people agree that a .50 2-stroke is the perfect power for this airplane. You can chose between different brands. Personally, I tried a Magnun 0.52 in a heavier airplane ~7lb. and the Magnun is capable of pulling the airplane to almost unlimited vertical. I am please with it. The warning is the adjustment of this engine is very sensitive. But, in general, I would still buy another magnun. It is the same case of the 40s but with much power. A 60 engine would be too much heavy for this airplane.

As you do, I still have my kit in the shelf. I decided to assemble a Dazzler before the CAP because it is faster to build and I already had an engine for it. For the CAP. I need to buy another engine.

Hope it helps,

Pedro

Default RE: Engine for a GP Cap 232 40

Well I was up the field all day today and might have changed my mind. I was talking with some of the guys and I might put a four stroker in the plane. The main plane I fly has a OS FS-70 II Surpass on it. The OS is an awesome engine but I would like something else for the Cap. So now I'm thinking maybe a YS .63 FZS or a Saito 72 or 82. I like the Saito 82 but one of the guys up the field said that they have been having trouble with the 82's, any truth to this? I did a search and didnt see anything...

I know Im confused

Several 82s flying at our field with no problems. I have a 70 Surpass in my GP Cap, can't imagine anything smaller.

I had a 70 Surpass on mine and it was plenty of power. I lost mine this weekend due to a structual failure of the rudder while doing a knife edge. The plane was built as per plans with the rudder servo being installed in the fusealage rear end. The rudder failed at the control horn. The balsa in both directions cracked and left the control horn hooked only to the push rod. The loss of rudder forced the plane into a complete nose down attitude and I was not quick enought to catch it. It hit square on the nose cone. The plane was a total loss. I have learned that a push pull linkage might have helped but definantly use harder wood on the rudder or run strips of carbon fiber on the support's. Great flying plane, Good Luck, Dave

Greetings:
Be careful where you place the rudder servo, because the plane will tend to be tail heavy. If you don't place the rudder servo in tail as recommended you can use a smaller engine. I bolted a GMS 76 to the plane with the rudder in rear and it flies like a bat for you know where. The GMS has been very reliable, easy to tune and cheap. It is as good as the old K&B 60, which ran forever with a little castor oil in the fuel.

Whatever engine you put in make sure the plane is under 6 pounds, it will fly soooo much better.

My twelve-year old second cousin built one and put a TT 46 in it. I flew it and thought it was "acceptable" at our 1500 ft. elevation field. I built one and have a K&B Twist Head 61 in it, and it is even "more acceptable". This particular 61 doesn't weigh a whole lot more than a 46 but has more basic power. I did not put the rudder servo in the tail. The plane builds light and flies well in a pattern type mode (no 3D for me).

Hope you enjoy it!

My dad and I had a cap 232 from Great Planes, and he flew his with an O.S. 70 surpass. Not only did it sound good, but had enough power to do almost anything. Hope this helps. Good Lck. Thanks Greg.

I already have a OS FS-70 II Surpass in one of my other planes. I love that motor but buying another would be silly. Why have two of the same motor when I can buy something else... I cant have two of the same thing, I need a variety of cool toys!

I am building a GP Cap 232 now and plan on using a Saito 65 in mine. I used that engine in a Super Sportster and found it to be a perfect match. Both planes are about the same size and weight.

I flew my GP Cap for 4 years with an OS 70. Recently refurbished the airplane. One of the changes I made during the refurb was the engine. I installed a Saito 91. Same weight as the Os 70. but lots more power. This made a great plane even better.
