Good plan. I think I'll hold off on mechanical retracts as long as I'm flying off grass. How tall are the Aresti gear?

I'll let you know later today. The Aresti gear are supposed to be at my LHS today.

My Airtronics Stylus came today and the US40+ and Saito .72 will be here Monday!

That should be a nice set up. I reallly wanted to put a 4s in mine, but as it is my first low wing, a 2S was advised. Mine is ready to fly again this weekend.

Aresti Gear are back ordered with Horizon Hobby. There is a guy at my field that has an Aresti so I'll measure them this Sunday.

Ive had an Ultra Sport for about 5 years and have to say I dont think I have noted any shortcomings in mine. Went together really easy and flies great.

Finally got off my but and got to finish my Ultrasport and I HATE COVERING!!! but it is almost done...... Plan on the maiden this weekend. I have it set up with my JR 8103 with JR DS811 servos and a YS 63FZ So what should I be expecting out of this plane, Will try to get pictures before first flight in case it does'nt have a second flight :stupid: So what kind of flight characteristics does this plane have, It is my second build and hope it flies as good as it looks. Any feedback is appreciated.

Jeez, with a YS 63, I think you can expect great vertical!

Set up on low throws, the plane flys very smooth and fast. I've got my CG at 5 1/16th back from the LE and that seems to be a realy good set up for me. I've got an OS 46FX in mine, and am not 3Ding the thing.

The elevator is very sensitive and if your throws are too high it will snap out of tight loops. On the manual recommended "high" throws, mine was snapping when I was trying to do "wall" maneuvers, but I think my entry speed was too fast.

Overall, I am very pleased with the flying characteristics of my US40+. If I were to do it again, I would not build with retracts though, they are a pain in the butt!

Keep us posted on the maiden flight!

As long as this thread still has a little life. I finally have pictures developed of mine all finished. Saito 91 with 13 x 8 APC. I love the retracts...except.....sometines I wish I could run a bigger prop. A 14 x 6 would be nice but it is just too close with the retracts even with them extended from the plans.

finally got the maiden on mine today and should have some pics to post tomorrow, Just waiting for them to be e-mailed to me. All I can say about my first YS is WOW!!! This engine is so smooth and great transition, Took off with a little more than 1/4 throttle and surprisingly did not need a touch of trim, Another surprise was a friend just maidened his GP Venus right before me also with a YS 63 and the way they handled and tracked looked almost identicle, Kept it on low rates and did not ring it out other than a few rolls and a loop but this plane is the smoothest thing I ever flew. One difference from the venus is US40+ glides much better.... YEA I ran it out of fuel :stupid: and I managed to bring it 3/4 around the field and bring it into the wind and got it home in one great piece. Started getting dark so the next flight will have to wait till next weekend.

Here's a low res pic of my US40+. Still have to paint the cowl but I will fly this weekend!

Here's the setup:

Saito 72 w/APC 13x6.
Airtronics Stylus radio.
JR 3421 Mini Digitals (70 in/oz on 6v)- 1 ea Ail, 1 for rudder, 1 for Ele.
Sullivan Kevlar pull pull system.
5 cell AAA 720Mah Nimh pack.
Omitted all the landing blocks in the wing and all the landing block ply supports in the wing.
Used a 1/4" ply plate keyed into the lower fuse and Sig Kadet alloy gear.
Built it light and sanded everything.

I cant wait to weight it and fly it!

That thing should ROCK!

My US40+ is down for the count at this point. Two aborted takeoffs due to retract failures got me frustrated the other evening. By the time I got the retracts working I was fuming and on the third attempt I didn't notice I had switched the TX to 3D rates. The full throttle "post-hole-auger" impression left me with a damaged but repairable wing and a some minor damage to the fuse. Rather than repairing the wing, I think I will order a wing kit and re-build the plane with fixed L/G - just like everyone advised me to in the first place. Too bad, I just had the thing figured out and was flying the heck out of it!

If I were to do it again I would use diffrent gear like the swept Aresti gear as I originally planned. Because of how the wing mounts I have to remode the gear to get the wing on. Now I wish I hadn't made the fit of the filler block from the root rib to the fuse so tight! The swept gear would give just enough room to let the wing fall in place.

I was shocked to see how much hard wood and ply you have to put in the wing to support the fixed gear. I omitted this and saved 2-3 oz. Also, the alloy gear is much lighter than the steel fixed gear.

Why all the trouble with the retracts? Not able to get them aligned or what?

I fly off a grass field, and it seems like half the time the gear legs get tweaked enough on take-off, that they will not retract all the way. Also, if the linkage is not "just-right" the gear will not lock. If it doesn't lock down, it collapses on the runway.

I just want to fly, spending time fixing such things on the field is not what I want to do!

5.0 Lbs Ready To Fly!!!

This thing is going to be a monster!

The really sick thing is that I didn't replace a lot of wood in this kit and right now I have a 1000Mah 2/3 AA 5 cell pack in it. A AAA 720Mah 5 cell will be lighter. The ribs and the fuse sides weigh a ton. If I build another one I'll make a set of contest grade ribs and fuse sides.

Hmmm,...carbon gear....4.75lbs?

Finally got the pics sent to me, Not sure how heavy mine is but with this YS63FZ I passed a few Homesick ANgels on the way up, Let me know what you guys think. These pics where before I finished the cockpit and cowl and I added a blue stripe to the wing to finish it off.
The side with my friends Venus also with a YS 63 and YES that is Donkey piloting the Venus.... It is a flying Donkey!!!!

Be careful with fuel and you canopies! I got a few drops splashed on mine while priming my Saito 72 for break in. I painted my canopy black on the inside and now I have these frosted drips on the out side

This was with 15% nitro!
