Well I've finally started my build on my 4 * 120. Progress will be slow during the summer since the days are long, and I have a lot of outside projects to keep me buisy. My last build was a 4 * 60. I did several modifications on it that turned out good, and will apply them to the 120. I still need an engine, and am 99% sure on the one that I will purchase for it real soon, and that's a Mintor 22cc gas. It's a fairly new engine that has some good reviews so far. Has anyone out there put one on the 4 * 120? If you have, I'd like to have a report. Maybe I'll be the first.

I switched the prop on the DLE20 to an APC 16x6, and that woke the plane up. It flew much better and has some power now. Lost the left wheel pant though, saw it flutter off. Happy to say though, the second flight was much better than the first, I didn't hit anything on take off. Learned to use full rudder rate on take off, thats why I had problems the first few attempts to take off, I was over correcting because it took more rudder on the radio than what i was getting on the plane, so when it didn't react as expected I gave more and then it over corrected. On Full rate though a touch of rudder gave the expected results, so I was able to take off nice and straight. Still working on the landing though, after the wheel pant came off, I brought it right in since I didn't know what came off, and I didnt get it lined up right, and brought it in on an angle, so correcting the direction and trying to flare and watch the speed and not hit anythingresultedin another bounce and prop strike.
It was also against my good direction, right to left, so overall, I didn't do too bad. When I come in from the right, it is much further away from me, than from the left, so judging distance is more difficult. There is also an A26 wreck to one side that I need to avoid, and corn on the other. It is achallengingfield to fly from.
But I like the 4*! Its a good second step up plane from a trainer, unlike the Eflite T-34 that I have. That one is difficult to fly well. Verysensitiveon the controls, even with the droops. It does fly better now with the glow engine on it, it weighs a half pound more, and doesn't float as much as it did, which made landings a pain. It's hard to land a plane thatdoesn'twant to land. The 4* floats down nicely too. When I retrieved the plane I noticed that most of my nose weight had fallen off, only 1/4 ounce remained of 2 ounces, and I saw no signs of them on the runway where I landed, so they much have come off in flight, but didn't notice any tail heavy tendencies. Going to rebalance and glue the weights on this time.

I just pick up one of these as well. Power will be a 120AX, I plan of clipping the wings one bay, extending the rudder a bit. Otherwise just keeping it as light as I can. I would like to try and get 10 lbs or less for the final weight.

Well the plan changed today. I am going to let my friend use the 120 in a Super Sportster rebuild and I ordered a DLE-35RE for this build. I did some searching and it should fit inside the cheek cowls without any cutting required. I just need to make the firewall heavier and move it back some. I still plan on cutting out one bay on each wing and I may cut the dihedral in half.

So how is the DLE 35RA doing in a 4 Star 120? I put a G38 in my first one and am just starting on another and I have a G38 on ignition that I plan to use. Hope more 4* 120 talk shows up. Brian

I'll find out next spring. Right now there is 4 feet of snow on the ground and it is running around 0F.

So, is this kit still offered by Sig? I saw it on their site last time I looked but didn't know if the pics were current and I have not tried asking anyone yet. Thanks.

Yes it is, I am building one that I received from them a few months ago, and the kit is excellent.   If you can still get them, the Aerokote rolls are pretty good. They are wider than Mono and Ultra, and I covered the plane with 3 rolls.

So...I am thinking a G20ei would do ok on this plane if kept light.....what do you think? I know that this plane was meant to be in the 10-11lb. range. I have often thought about getting one and for some reason want 1 real bad here lately. I would have to have wheel pants as they make a world of difference on this plane and a little bit taller landing gear.

Mine is coming in around 9 pounds with a DLE20. the landing gear is the same height with or without pants, its predrilled for them.

The 4^120 should be fine with the 20cc engines as I've seen them fly OK with a ST90

You may need some nose weight?

+1.. I agree. I have a friend that flys one with a really old G23 and it flys great as far as I'm concerned. It won't hover, but he nor I ever cared about that. Brian

This is my second 4*120, the first was an ARF and I flew it with the DLE and it flew great. Stupid wing wasnt glued well and snapped off in flight.

I would bend my new landing gear as I've always thought the ones supplied in the kit sit way to low.
The wheel pants could then be fitted to the new gear with no problems.

Flew it with a 17" prop and had no clearance problems.  I polished and clear coated mine. Should look pretty sharp.
