RE: Concept Fleet Biplane
Ken,
I took a Fleet to the IMAA Rally of Giants in Odessa. I had one of Al first Dolmar crank 2.6 gas engines with Carpenter ignition. I was so glad JW was there. While my fleet flew it was sort of wild because the Declage was off. He set me straight on it. Ever since then he and I were flying buds. Those were the good old days.

Charles:
Yes the white border is correct, what will 4-7inch and 2-10.5 inch of those cost me? Also does anyone know for sire if the Fleet was soloed from the rear cockpit?

Does anyone know if the full scale fleet had any hatches on the fuse. I would like to put my switches inside a hatch, but would like to use a scale location if possible.

RE: Concept Fleet Biplane
Just to muddy the area of rib stitchings on the Fleet.
I seem to remember reading somewhere that the early Fleets fabric was screwed to the ribs instead of lacing through the rib bays. I searched the 'puter and found little to convince some. Wonder where I read it.
A local pilot has a real Fleet 16B Finch that was an RCAF trainer of the 30s and 40s. Equipped with a large greenhouse canopy and exhaust collector ring and Kinner K-5. Large rudder and the tailwheel location was moved noticeably forward of the rudder. His restoration removed the unsightly greenhouse canopy and collector ring. Cold winters in Canada.
Lovely to watch at shows. He demo'd on a few of our IMAA flyins. I built his version (16B) but painted it up in a Tenn. Red and Diana Cream scheme.
I miss my Fleet but I know it sits high on perminate display. I may build another but it will not feature the built up spars and ribs.

RE: Concept Fleet Biplane
Avaiojet sent me a pair of very nice 'Fleet' logos for my (on order) 1/4 scale Concept kit. Thank you Charles! Very nice work. You will be the first call I make for lettering or emblems.
It's been a long time since I built (- not assembled) a plane (yea I'll confess), but I'm really looking forward to this one. I have a G38 sitting on the shelf.

Hi Ya'll,
I'm picking up a used 1/3 scale Fleet from a club member today..in decent shape. Does anybody know where I can get a 1/3 dummy radial engine kit or dummy cylinder kit? Not sure what kind of engine the originals used..Kinner engine I think..
I/m thinking of a ZG 38 for power...will this be enough? any other suggestions..
Thanks Guys

Ray,
Don't know if you ever got a reply about the fleet logo you needed. If you are still interested I have the fleet logo in perfect vector format I did for a club member a few years ago (I'm also a graphic designer). I can send you the file which you can take to any sign company and choose you own vinyl color to have it cut out for you...either positive ( for direct application- stick on) or negative for spraying and then removing the stick-on..
Best Eric

RE: Concept Fleet Biplane
A friend of mine has just finished a 1/6th scale version. We were wondering which CG position works best for the initial test flights. The plan is marked on the top wing at 25%, 30% and 33%. We would appreciate any suggestions..
Thanks,
Randy

Randy,
I got this Biplane C/G diagram from Duncan Hutson a few years ago and it has served me well for initial flights..I will be using this on my 1/4 Fleet in a few weeks when I get my engine installed.
You won't go wrong with it...

RE: Concept Fleet Biplane
Thanks Eric,
We used a similar formula, where you drew an imaginary line between the two 25% points on the two wings, then halfway between the wings, along that line you projected a vertical line to the top wing. where that line hit the top wing was the CG...came out to nearly that 30% mark, and looks very similar to the CG point that your diagram gives....Seems a little far aft but maybe it's OK..
I'll print your diagram....
Thanks again..

Yep, both methods work out pretty close to each other...might be better to err on the side of caution and use the more forward CG anyway to make sure your plane doesn't get to squirrely on first flight or two...

Eric,
Thanks, but I decided to paint my markings and graphics, and so have had paint masks made up.
I'm seeing light at the end of the tunnel on the Fleet. Its been a big project!! Good thing its been a rainy spring in Oregon or I wouldn't be anywhere near finished.

I am in the process of building the 1/6th scale kit just purchased from Concept Models. I have a fiberglass cowl and a set of 5 Williams Bros 1/6 Wright J-5 Whirlwind cylinders. I am planning on an electric motor for power. Where I need some help is how to make up the cowl/cylinder assembly so it looks good and is durable. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, NM

RE: Concept Fleet Biplane
The later engines used on the Fleet was a Kinner R-5. I built a 1/4 scale Concept kit some years ago and used plywood disks cut to size and stacked on a dowel to simulate the engine. Not a hard engine to copy except the valve covers and using solid blocks of maple, hogged them out with a dremel.

Soon, I'll try to start a site for my new Fleet construction. I got the Wiess plans from Ziroli, fiberglass cowl, and newly arrived a Precision Cut Kit. Beautiful is a word that barely discribes the artwork within that box.Anyway , the engine is not hard to make but getting 72 degrees apart mounting on the fibergalss cowl can be done by mounting a spare old prop on a mounted motor , drill a hole one of the blades for a marker and swing the apparatus around the perifery and mark where the cylinders go.

RE: Concept Fleet Biplane
OK, I haven't been doing any building lately but since I lost 2 planes in the last 2 weeks due to a Tx aerial problem I'm getting back to the Fleet. It’s built and covered and all the stitching & taping is done and the base coat on it. I'm now starting to put on the color. (See attached pic) It's a F10G Romanian (license built with an inverted gypsy Moth engine) they used them as a WWII trainer, so it’s a warbird (of sorts).

Thanks for the info on the radial engine. I am building the 1/6th scale Concept Fleet and the cylinders are the Williams Bros 1/6 Wright Whirlwind. Here are a couple of pics of what I have so far. I am planning to put the pentagon into the cowl permanently once I get the fuselage built so I can set the spacing. I am going to use electric power but don't have much experience in motor selection. I expect a weight of ~5lbs. Any input would be appreciated - thanks, NM
