msouth, thats a really nice lookin SSE, how long did it take you to build it?

KCR, Thanks for the compliment on my plane. It took about 3 weeks to build, but I spent a lot of time on it every evening. My wife actually picked out all the colors and the graphic scheme for the covering. Today was the maiden flight and it flew great. I got in 4 flights with it, and it was a lot of fun to fly. I did have to put some expo in the elevator after the first flight because with the recomended control throws, it is still very jumpy even on low rates. The plane lands so slow you won't believe it....enjoy the build!

if its pic 5 u are refering to mabe i cant see it because of camera flair but everything seems to be fine. can u put some arrows where u see the defects pls

It is very hard to see in the picture, I've tried other angles but none of them show them, I've added where the deflection is.

I guess the big question is can I just sand the entire surface flush and straight? or is a minor deflection (1/16" or so) nothing to worry about?

i think i see it now man its a tiny flaw if its an indent in the chord i'd say fill it in and sand flat if its a bumpy area slowly sand it flat with rest of TE. if u really want to be flat put a metal ruler or that lil square u got there on the edge and hold it up to the light so u can better see how much to add take off

I just noticed your thread KC & have to concur with what the others have said. The SSE is an excellent flying plane. On low rates, it's as gentle as a trainer & floats in.

I will certainly be following your thread & offering up any assistance I can.

Okay, I think I will just attach some sandpaper to my work surface and sand the highspots down. Like I said, the deflection is very minimal, but I wasn't sure how much of a problem it would be when I go to line up the aleron (sp?).

Hard to tell from the pic, but it looks like it's no big deal. I just finished my SSE a few weeks ago. Saito 82 on it...goes straight up forever. You will love this plane.

Thanks for the compliment. I started on 12/23 & finished on 1/16 with the maiden on 1/22. I guestimated about 60 hours total time spent.

Here's one I just finished covering. I built the fuselage, and recovered the wings from another plane. I started on it thursday. These little planes are hard to see, so I used cub yellow. My old one was modified, this one is stock.

Update on my status:
I need to get some new pics up, I didn't get much done today, weather was too nice out and the wife and baby girl needed some much needed attention. I did manage however to destroy one of my electrics while flying. We had intermittent breeze today, and anything above 5 mph for wind the electric I was flying just start to sail. It sailed right into a chain link fence about 600ft from me, basically shredded it. Oh well, more reason to finish this one and get with an instructor!

I built the ailerons today however, and I going to order the replacement wing kit tommorow, should have it by the end of next week. Realizing I was going to run out of stuff to do without an engine, I went ahead and got an OS 46AX, from what I've been reading on here and what the guys at the LHS told me, I think I will be much happier then the LA I was originally going to get.

I am going to start on the tail end of things tommorow, and hopefully build the fuse up as well.

What size/type of prop do you all recommend for this Motor/plane combination?

It depends on what you want to do. IMO an APC 11x6 is the ideal prop for the OS 46 if your doing sport flying. If you want to 3D it you can use the APC 12.25 x 3.75 (what I use). The 46 isn't exactly a 3D monster with this plane, but it will hover it.
Also, if you use the 12.25 with the stock gear; anything but a gentle 3 point landing will get you a prop strike because the stock LG isn't very tall.

Skillwise I am a long way off from 3D flying. I just want something that will be good and steady for my first flights, but can kick it up a notch when I'm ready to do more stuff.

My original one was built with enlarged tail feathers and a K&B 61. It flew really good, and hovered well. This one has a GMS 47 on it. I'm changing strategy a little and trying to keep this one very light. No wheel pants, no tail wires, much lighter engine.

As far as the color scheme goes, I didn't really put much thought into it. I used scraps for the stripes, and just wanted a little color on the top for orientation. I know how well this plane flies, and I know it will be flown very hard, so i didn't want something that was hard to patch. That's the real reason for going simple.

Just finished my second SSe. Great planes whether young or old. Mine finished out at 4lbs with a 70 OS 4-stroke on it. The old one was set up the same way. Flies great and lands easier than some trainers. Just keep you surface movement to a minium until you are comfortable with the plane. After that dial up the movement and have a blast.

If you want to really see a small plane well try fluorescent covering. Took the wife to the hobby shop so she could pick colors for me. Look what I got! The pics don't do justice to how bright the pink and green are. Lots of positive comments at the field about how visible it is. Thinking about testing SFG's on the wingtips to possibly improve knife edge.

The neon colors are nice, but they fade in the sunlight. I suggest you keep it covered while you are not flying it to make it last longer. No, I'm not kidding. It's a shame, because it looks totally awesome.

Fluorescents are probably the worst about fading. It does sit in the shade when its not rippin up the sky. Thanks for the compliments guys.

Wow that is very very bright, but looks good.

I got some good work done on the plane today, I'm still working, just taking a back rest break. I'll post photos after Im done for the night.
